Tron 1.5.2

The first episode of season 2 of Tron: Uprising aired tonight. (Some episodes are online, depending on your TV provider, or through iTunes, but it's crazy-expensive there.)   Tonight's episode was "The Reward", in which Tesler offered up a shiny-new car to whoever turned in The Renegade.   Needless to say, that worked well. Because there were dozens of Renegades turned in. Way to clean up the streets there, programs. Of course, none of them were the real one.   Beck decided to lay low in h

Avengers: Infinity War - Spoiler-free review

Dang. I mean seriously... dang! I just got back from seeing Avengers: Infinity War, and I'll get to the review in a moment. But first - a rant. I try to avoid spoilers. And I hate websites that spoil movies. I wasn't planning to see Infinity War until later in the week, but felt I had to see it tonight if I had any chance of avoiding spoilers. Why? Well, because of idiots at websites and YouTube channels like IGN, Nerdist and Because Science. Yeah, that's right - I'm calling the lot

Thor: Ragnarok - Spoiler-free review

It's been a few months since I've reviewed any movies. I did get out to see Dunkirk after Spider-Man: Homecoming, but never wrote up a review for it. In short - I thought it was really well done. Very different from a typical war movie, and well worth seeing on a big screen. But since it's out of theaters now... I don't think you'd get the same sort of visceral impact when watching it at home. So... never mind. Anyway... as if I hadn't seen enough superhero films this year already, last week

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice - Spoiler-free movie review

Back on April 8, 2015, I posted a status update about the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , and my impression at the time was, "Batman v. Superman sure looks... dreary." Monday night (admittedly, at an 11:15PM showing) I saw BvS in at the ArcLight theater in Sherman Oaks. This was in one of their biggest theaters, in an ATMOS-equipped room, and less than a week after the film opened. So even though it was a pretty late showing, and on a week night, you'd expect some kind of a crowd for

The Peanuts Movie - Spoiler-free movie review

Wah wah wah wah, wah wah, wah wah wah wah. Sorry... couldn't resist. I've been a Peanuts fan as far back as I can remember. I read Peanuts books and drew Peanuts cartoons as soon as I was old enough to read a book or hold a crayon. I've still got a picture I drew as a little kid of Snoopy's dog house (a cutaway view showing the inside and all of the stuff that he had in there), and there's a photo somewhere of me standing in front of a chalkboard we had at home drawing Snoopy on it. I had

Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Spoiler-free review

10:52 PM   Sitting in a theater with just two other people (two more went to get snacks) waiting for the 11:00 PM show to start. I'd planned to go to the 10:00, but didn't get out of work in time. So stay tuned for the review - coming later tonight! Looking forward to the film. The reviews have been really positive. I guess I'll know in just over two hours.   Hey - two more people! We've got a crowd! Time to post this, then shut 'er down.     8 movie trailers and two-plus hours later…

Artie the Atari - the (in)complete index

As Artie the Atari grinds its way towards its 150th episode, I decided to put an index together of all of the episodes to date. Someday, I'd like to annotate and collect them all into a PDF or iBook, but that may have to wait until episode 300. (Note: since writing that I've gone well past the 300th episode. Still thinking "someday" for the book. ) I'll periodically update the index as new episodes are added. 2007 The first strips! Artie's flickering Adventure: Stripping

Star Trek 3... and beyond

Since the Star Trek reboot seems intent on recycling old story elements for their films, I thought I'd help them out with a plot summary for the next one.   Okay… it starts out with a group of space hippies who steal Spock's brain.   Their society (which is based on ancient Rome) is under the control of an intelligent supercomputer named Landru (who talks like a 1930's gangster), and they need Spock's brain to build a weapon to defeat their enemies (space Nazis) on a neighboring planet. And

Brave (spoiler-free review)

Currently, it's 11:41 PM, and I'm sitting in a movie theater, waiting for the first showing of Brave. Now, I'm not usually enough of a movie nut to go on opening night (or in this case - opening morning since the movie starts at 12:05 AM), but 1) I was bored and 2) I've learned not to go see Pixar films during the day, because parents tend to take their kids to those showings. I'm talking kids in strollers. Crying. Not how I want to spend my movie going hours.   Usually this late, there are ve

An Observation

So I'm at an Apple Store right now, checking out the latest tech, and in hindsight, it probably wasn't the best idea to put the store so close to a Five Guys Burgers 'n' Fries... 'cause man, I'm gettin' this iPad screen greasy!

Car(s)2(oons)

The trailer for Cars 2 has been released:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFTfAdauCOo   It looks pretty good. I'll admit I was skeptical about Cars 2, since contrary to most Pixar films (where they put story first), I'd heard reports that Cars 2 was green-lit and scheduled before a story was even in place.   Why would Pixar do that?   Simple.   The Cars franchise pulls in some 2 billion dollars a year in merchandising.   Two. Billion.   With a "B".   Now, the idea of a spy story

Working backwards

Recently, I've been doing some work for the forthcoming Harmony cart. In case you've missed it, the Harmony is a programmable cartridge for the 2600, which you can use as a multi-cart for playing nearly every 2600 game ever made, or for developing homebrews and testing them on real hardware.   The genesis of the project was in trying to come up with a way to produce homebrew cartridges in a more efficient manner, rather than Albert having to hand-solder and assemble every single circuit board,

Upping the ante

So many potential "Up" puns... but I had to pick just one for this entry's title. Such is life.   I finally managed to get out and see Up today, in glorious 2-D! Hey... it was an Imax theater (although not an Imax print), so at least the screen was huge. But we decided as a group that our past experiences with 3-D weren't worth the extra five bucks. Maybe it would have been, since I certainly would have paid more to see Up if I'd had to. (Although after getting lunch first, then tickets and a

Two very empty islands...

The world of entertainment lost two legends this week...   Ricardo Montalban passed away at 88.   Patrick McGoohan passed away at 80.   To me, Ricardo Montalban will best be remembered as Khan. Coincidentally, I watched Star Trek II last night - it was showing in HD on U-Verse's "free preview" week - and I relished his performance. He was the only villain to really match Kirk's bravado. Space opera at its finest. Most articles today I've seen refer to his stint on Fantasy Island. Of course

Incoming! part 1

I'm splitting this "making of" into two parts. The first part will go over the usual "how I made the label" thing (is this getting boring yet?), and part two will be more of a Photoshop tutorial.   After the Lead contest, I really wanted to do something that felt more like a painting, or a loose illustration. Not really tight and fussed over as my Lead illustrations had been. A lot of the early Atari 2600 artwork has a loose feel to it, where you can still see some of the pencil art underneath

Homebreviews - part 2

The reviews continue... Crazy Balloon 4/5 Crazy Balloon was an obscure arcade game from the 70's, from a time when videogame genres were still being invented. Game companies hadn't settled into reusing the same formulas over and over again, and unique, quirky games like Crazy Balloon were the result. While essentially a maze game, Crazy Balloon is more than simply finding your way from point A to point B. It's a devious mix of needing to be patient, while beating the clock. The first few level

How do I not know about these things?

Funny how you can be on the internet for some 14 years, and it takes you that long to run into an awesome site like: TelevisionTunes.com   Not everything is in there, but it's surprisingly comprehensive. I even managed to find some gems like: Battle of the Planets Star Blazers   They have hundreds of classics like: The Six Million Dollar Man The Match Game Love American Style Emergency S.W.A.T. Wide World of Sports Sanford and Son Chico and The Man   Do you remember... After M*

172.42 GB

The digitizing is complete! Stella at 20 is now in the computer, backed up to a second external drive, and backed up to DVCAM tapes.   172.42 GB is how much space the source footage takes up. That translates into roughly 14 hours.   Wanna see it?     What - you thought I meant the actual video? Sorry. I don't have that kind of web space.   Also in that list you'll see Stella at 20 volumes 1 and 2, which I digitized as an editing guide.   After having watched all the footage, I can

Homebreviews - part 3

Only "three" reviews this time - but that last one is a doozy!   Ultra SCSIcide 4/5   Okay, it's time to dust off the paddles and spray a little contact cleaner in there. Fast-paced doesn't even begin to describe Ultra SCSIcide once it gets going. The game takes place in a hard drive, and it's your job to catch (or "read") colored data bits in the correct order as they go speeding by. Read the wrong ones or wait too long to read the right ones, and the hard drive will crash! It's pretty easy
