About this blog

I'm really not sure what I'll use this blog for so I should probably leave this blank, but that would require backspacing. Much easier to just hit a period and stop typing.

More coding babble.

I fixed the glitch mentioned in the last post soon after the update. Not entirely sure what was going on but the bug was caused by good old copy pasta. It was testing one condition then setting a totally different one based on it and voila. Key-to-Heart glitch.   Anyway, I likely won't do the next part today as I'm a bit busy with other chores, but the next task will be expanding the drop-item code so that it can detect when an object is out of bounds when dropped - and if dropped while out o

Mord's Project No Dollar

Just so you know where the subject is coming from, it's from here.     You know, the whole attack on the secondhand game market makes me sick.   The rabid fanbase that defends the attack as something nobel and justified also makes me sick.   It makes me violently ill whenever I see those dicks trying to rationalize it, especially when they compare buyers of secondhand games to the likes of copyright infringers. "Pirates" for those who like incorrect terminology.   Needless to say, I get

Minor Project Starting.

Starting from my shell program (Which I think I'll update for the future to use the macro.h functions) I'm going to fiddle around with making a vertical shooter.   I'm not stopping/abandoning Action RPG. I've been having trouble with the new animation routines. They aren't pulling info in properly. So taking a step back for now to think about it while I work on this. Plus I plan on developing a similar/identical animation routine for the enemies in this new game. The hope is that I'll be

Minecraft: Main Base

Seems most of my gaming went off the table once I managed to fix up Minecraft so it would technically work on my comp. (The black screen bug affects it, so I ended up having to delete the .minecraft folder and redownload the modified client launcher.)   Still, even with that out of the way I have to keep fog up high to have any chance at an acceptable frame rate. And even then, if I'm near a lot of mobs or if the weather stuff is happening, or BGM is playing, or if there's lots of running wate

Maze Realms v0.020...5!

I was starting to procrastinate again due to the anticipated complexity of swapping out the old Action RPG object slot variables with the new more generalized object slot variables. Finally forced myself to sit down today, despite how that's been hurting my lower back mysteriously this last week, and ironed it out.   Funny enough, it went by a lot faster than I had feared it would. In the system now there's only 7 active objects possible instead of the previous 8. Before I consider this versi

Maze Realms v0.019 source

Oh before I forget, here's the source for version 0.019. (20091113)   I've already started in on optimizing what's already there. Some things run a lot faster, other things have waste trimmed.   After I take another look through the code for "easy" optimizations, I'm probably going to start hacking away at the Status Bar. The only thing that Maze Realms is going to need is the player's power/magic bar so everything else is going to be removed. At the same time, I'll be centering the power b

Maze Realms reformatted

Took a while for me to get to this point since I was also mapping out 7800 games, listening to music, attempting to design a few big complicated and likely unworkable 7800 cartridge formats, and various other little projects. After all that, I finally have the source code for Maze Realms (The old Action RPG code base) reformatted and compiling.   It doesn't FUNCTION correctly however since I ripped various things out as I went. That's the next phase.   Have to clarify in my head again exa

Maze Realms (v0.021)

Ok, added a couple monsters that I'll be using to test the various aspects of the Inactive List. I'll likely tweak it but for now it's ok. The Data byte for the slots is patched in and it will save to the Inactive list when that's implemented next version.   Color of the object is usually hardwired into the object's data. That will probably work fine for most cases but if the color is read in as 0, it'll load whatever is in the Data byte instead. The application of such is used in the Hearts a

Maze Realms (v0.020)

Ok, this should do for another micro-version.   In this version I've redone the status bar. In this game the only things it will need is the player's magic/power bar, so I've removed the extra things. The color of the status bar (the blue part) will actually serve a purpose to indicate to the player when they step into a magic field. I'll be changing the default color to probably a gray color to indicate the absence of a magic field. This will be a function of room AI which I will be adding i

Maze Realms "version 0.019"

Ok here's an updated rom for Maze Realms. (Previously "Action RPG")   Mostly this just fixes up a few scanline glitch scenarios and an update to the held-object/drop-object routines for use in the new direction this old code base is taking. (I'll be taking Action RPG in a different direction later. I figure it would be best for me to keep working on this code now that I'm familiar with it again along with getting a bunch of ideas for it!)   At any rate, the file names are being changed to re

Maze Game Idea

While sitting on #jagware on irc.worldnet.net tonight I started thinking about the old code base I had for Action RPG.   (I haven't been able to really sit down and code all this time on the new code base all the same)   Anyway rather than just let that bit rot I was thinking of dusting off Version 0.018 (The last 'stable' version) and continuing that in a different direction. Essentially I'll fix up a couple of the object boundary problems still present in it (noticable if you carry the key

Maria/Sally split rom?

Just a random thought I had while procrastinating on the display half-asleep. (I will work on the kernel again this weekend darnit!!)   The halt line controlled by Maria on the 7800 extends out to the cartridge. So what if that line was tied to the highest address line on a 17-address-line rom? Since the HALT line effectively identifies which CPU is in control, it would automate the task of changing between a rom that Sally saw (filled with data tables, sound info, and algorithms/routines) an

Mana Khemia

Finished this last weekend. I have a few save games near the end so that I can pick a different ending without redoing the entire game, but I'm not to interested in actually doing that for now. I think I missed making like 1 item in the game, which of course prevented me from unlocking everybody's stats 100%. Some were as low as 95% due to that particular item blocking a few other items behind it. Ah well, not too important.   For a change of pace I've switched to the PS2 version of Dynasty

Looks like Knoppix and Slax work.

While Ubuntu failed me, it looks like I can boot with either Knoppix or Slax from the liveCD. I'm posting this here, in fact, from Knoppix 6.01.   Looks like they have noscript added to Ice Weasel (Basically rebranded firefox iirc) included. Excellent. I had a few problems at first trying to figure out how to connect with dsl, but help from irc friends got me through it.   I suspect I'm very close to installing it directly to the harddrive, but I think food will come first.

Long Weekend

And thus starts my long weekend as I decide to use a vacation day owed me tomorrow/friday. Was just feeling lazy all week in between coding. (I've already gotten some of the various bugs dealt with!)   Friday is suppose to rain however, so I guess it'll be a long weekend in front of the computer/tv! Last few games I've completed recently include GC version of Twilight Princess, Grandia III, and .hack//GU Vol 1. I tried getting back on track with Shenmue II but once again lost interest.

Linux plans

Posted on my live journal about this as well, but I've been inspired to attempt switching over to linux again. I think there's a free program for most everything I do on the computer, although I'd have to find out what people use for 7800 emulation, if anything. Was mostly for games that I would drag my feet on the switch (As I'm too lazy to bother with dualbooting ) but when I think about it, I don't really play games on the computer anymore beyond the occational randomly addictive flash game

Linux & Homebrewing

Eh, those two topics in the subject are unrelated at this point.   Anyway, tried the ubuntu 8.10 live CD. Obviously have some hardware problems or something. It'd get to the menu no problem and I'd try to run from the disc (top option) both regularly and through the F4 option of a Visual Safe Boot setting. It would work away for a little bit and I'd see the unbuntu logo with a progress bar (that's really kind of pointless).   Then it'll break to trying to Do Stuff. You'd see references of

KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!

*cough*   I'm glad I stumbled upon a thread that pointed to the mini-dig. While I've been there and poked around in the past now and then, I randomly checked Eckhard Stolberg's description of how VDEL works. That's saved me a few rewrite versions. But at the cost of needing to think about how this'll impact my upcoming display kernel. Hm.   Might work out. Might be hell.   In other "news". I think I've mentioned it before but odds are in the process of building up Action RPG's functi

It's time for a change!

... of budget!   Seriously, I have to beat this stupid spending habit I have for junk food and fast food etc.   It's not a good thing when the local Dairy Queen knows what the "Usual" is. Sitting down and just doing a few quick calculations kind of made my heart jump a bit, even as I reached for the diet cola.   And so hopefully I'll be able to sit down and write out a few changes to my spending pattern while allowing for other things to continue. For instance, I really have to

Is it safe to say I'm on the road to recovery?!

Caffeine free for almost 3 weeks baby!   I'm sure the stores have noticed a change in my purchases by now. Especially the clown. I was getting fed up with the employees trying to predict my (fairly predictable) order anyway - especially since they would routinely screw it up.   I'm hoping Al can get the attachments working so I can apply "punishment" for falling behind in my action rpg coding. (And the upcoming move isn't going to free up a lot of time for it either. )   -- Mord (I u

I'm a slow programmer.

That subject works on so many levels.   Anyway, I sat down and patched the relative exits for the proper detection of the Zero Nybble case. No bugs or troubles in adding it. I altered room 6 so that it used relative exits for the dead exits instead of normal exits in the main rom. Since there's literally no visible change to the player (... again. ) I'm not going to bother posting the rom this time.   The rest of this week is going to be split up between thinking about items/mobs an

I suck.

I've begun moving room data into a real room loading procedure. I had a few issues to work out but after a few hours of wondering WTF was going on with the data that was apparently NOT what I trying to load, and finding a few errors in the code along the way (not that they would do anything to fix the situation apparently) I finally got it working normally again.   All I have to say is this.   BNE != BEQ

I suck at sprites.

So while trying to do up semi-humanoid characters, I realized I suck at doing this. More than I anticipated that is. So, let's just BS an armless blob of a monster with stubby feet and call it the hero! It's going to be "fun" trying to figure out what this guy's powers are going to be. XD   Going to be more fun trying to figure out what kind of game I'm even making. Oh well, to heck with planning, it's only ever aided my procrastination anyway!     Yes I'm aware of the number of colors u

I blog way too often.

My brain is frying but that's ok! The code is starting to take shape. Been spending most of today analysing and editing the PrePlayer branch. The rest of the code is just a copy/paste + minor editing affair I believe so as long as THIS looks like it'll fit in the scanline properly the others should as well. (And I want to make sure PrePlayer is perfect before I copy/paste otherwise it'll mean a lot more editting later!)   As a bonus to me I added a check for screen termination that will en
