Version 2 of Quandor

Here's version 2. Fixed a few things. The yellow quandor on the right is all yellow instead of flashing white. Also, nobody noticed that if you hit the yellow quandor, you lose two lives. Fixed that to one. I also made quandors #2 and #5 move faster than #s 1, 3 & 4. And missile1 (the Adventure-type dot) no longer has a blue stripe flashing in it. I don't know how far I should go on this. I mean, it was an experiment at first, but now I might want 8bitclassics to make a cart out of this for

Veggie crazy

So it's time to shelve Killer Heads of Lettuce for a while, at least until Kevin Vs. Tomatoes comes out. I decided to restart the Adventures of the 50-Foot-Tall Stalk of Celery for the Atari 2600. I picked up right where I left off. I began work on an 8th stage. This is the final stage of the game, where Mr. Celery confronts an angry giant pig. This is the reason for the pig enemies on level 1. The pigs ate holes in Mr. Celery's favorite bridge and it's payback time for Mr. Celery, that is, if h

Vegetables that start with the letter C

So I'm making another weird sounds CD. So far this album I've employed an Odyssey 2 emulator and an Amiga emulator. I used the Say program to make the computer "say" stuff, then I garbled it up until it made weird noises. I don't know if I talked about my project called "scalene triangles abounding" here yet. I made one album and called it "corn." Now I'm making the second one called "carrot." I decided to go with a theme: vegetables that begin with C. So far I've thought of this: cauliflower

VCS on VCR

I finally figured out hooking my 2600 up to my VCR. Now I can record myself playing the Atari 2600. One problem, though, the colors are different. They're darker. The only concern I've run in so far is I can't see the ants in level 4 of my homebrew Ants game. Why would it be different? Is it the VCR? Probably, because the color is different if the VCR is not turned on. I hooked it up to the TV, which is hooked up to the VCR. I can now record a little low-power station in my area, KWVT channel 52

VB Success (finally.) part 2

I worked some more on this. I must have had to download it to my FlashBoy+, go to the den, cry out of frustration, come back in here, code some more and repeat that process about 10 times and that was the past hour of my life. The problem was the screen was flickering. I don't know why. Or how, but part of it was. I eventually made it calm down to get this result: I even added some clouds that go by. And yes, they must be that thin. I guess I could thicken them up, but not by very muc

VB Success (finally.)

So I figured out why I failed in my quest to make a Virtual Boy game. The problem was in the header. The game title needed to be EXACTLY 20 characters. My game title was 21. So fortunately, the phrase "Craig the Cranberry." has exactly 20 characters (I was using "Craig the Cranberry!!") I tried it on my FlashBoy+ and it works great. But why did it even bother working in Mednafen if the header wasn't correct? Mystery.   I was scared to eat a piece of pizza following my 2 hour long choki

VB Programming Anger

I'm programming a game called Castle of Doom for the Virtual Boy. It makes me so angry. Whenever I do something having to do with adding or changing sprites, the whole code goes wacko. I added another bat in room 4, and now the collision detection for the bats (enemies) has gone haywire. Mysteriously, the door collision detection was not harmed. Why can't things just remain the way they are in my code? Why isn't there a Virtual Boy Basic? Earlier, I had to rearrange the bat movement because pres

VB homebrewing log

GoSub 3D for Virtual Boy has grown. I surpassed the 256k mark and had to make the game 512k. I think when it's all said and done, it'll be either 1 or 2 Megabits. I hope to have this done by Halloween, which is about two months away. That's when the 2010 Planet Virtual Boy coding competition ends, and I want to enter it with this. I just added a tough level 8 with the password BOOBS. I was going to put in a picture of boobs if someone put in the "BOOBS" password, but I ultimately decided against

VB Coding competition (part 2)

Well, this is interesting. Seems like either my VB or my FlashBoy is faulty or something. When I play it on Mednafen, all the characters of text flash when they're supposed to, but on a real Virtual Boy, one of the characters of text does very little flashing or none at all. And it only happens sometimes. Other than that, I've made excellent progress on my game. I've implemented some new stuff so it will now be easier to work on it. So I don't know what to do. Probably keep it as is. Kinda funny

VB Coding Competition

I have announced over on the PVB forums that I am entering this year's game-making competition. I probably won't win, seeing as how I never did get even close to first the other two times, but I've been having this idea for a game for quite some time. I tried to implement it once, but I gave up in frustration. This time, though, I beat the problem I had the last time (I think.) and am ready to move forward. The last couple of hours have been spent creating my creation. I won't reveal what it is

Various crazy ideas

First off, I think it would be cool to have an radio station that plays nothing but Christmas songs...all year long. I'd start one, but I have no idea how to start a radio station. That, and it would probably be very expensive. Right now I'm listening to Christmas songs. I think it's weird that Christmas is the only holiday that has its own type of song. So I'm going to write some Halloween carols. Second, I was going through some various stuff when I stumbled upon my pog collection. Rememb

Valentine's Day

Happy Valentines Day! Yesterday, I went downtown and got me two records. The first one was Van Morrison's "Common One", one I have been looking for because it has two 15-minute songs on it ('Summertime In England', and 'When Heart Is Open'). I like 'Summertime In England' better because it actually has drumming on it. This is my first Van Morrison recording I own. The second one was Vanilla Fudge's "Near the Beginning", another one I have been looking for mainly because of side 2's 'Break Song'

Useful bugs

So I'm working on my secret project for the Odyssey 2. I thought I put in collision detection for just one object and another one. Instead when I tested it, I got collision detection for one object and the other object and the grid and the character, which is all good because that's what I wanted! I had a hard time with the explosion noise, then I remembered I had to do something different to trigger it. So I got it working. It is really interesting, especially the back story. Too bad I want to

Upmonsters - 7/20/18

So I worked on this for about three hours today. I think it's finally done for now. What's more, I kept it under the 16k limit - barely. That was the big problem: Fighting it, rearranging code, removing code, adding code. While testing the game, I got up to level 13. I added lives. You get four lives at the start. The scoring is when you get past 5 clouds, you get a point. Losing a life makes you lose the points you gained since the level started, unless you have 0 lives left and the game ends.

Upmonster again

I went to work on the Upmonster game again I've been making. After trying to fix the jump, I think I discovered why it was doing the high/low jumps: It had something to do with the way I was scrolling the screen. So I put in a bit of code and it looks way better. But then I had a bug in the 2 player game where it wasn't displaying the "P2 WON" message sometimes. I think I finally figured out why that was happening. But something seemed off. The upmonster was jumping on clouds, but the title sc

Updating my website.

Last night before I went to sleep, I decided to go through my website and see what old files I had. This led to me updating the look of the main page of my website. I brought back an old logo I had made for the site. Also, I put in a picture of an Atari 2600 for the background. I also brought back a couple of sections that had been missing for a long time. I stupidly accidentally erased the old index.html page I had for the old site last year. I put up a new one in January 2017. I have been ad

Updated GBA 07 site

I decided not to have a review of Zoey 101 because it might be terrific for teen girls, but we hardcore gamers are obviously going to hate a game like that. But I did create a page for it asking for a review. I added one more piece of info for each game, the size of each game is now posted. Spider-Man 3 is coming out Friday, to coincide with the movie's release, apparently, and I will have a review for that a few days after its release.

Update on Yesterday

#1 - It didn't get to be as cold as the local stations thought. I think it reached only 46 as opposed to 38 like they said. The Weather Channel got it right, though. #2 - I never did get the Halloween decorations up. I guess I'll do that tomorrow.   Since I was born on the same day that they voted to have Keizer (the town just north of us) seperated from the rest of Salem, and that it's almost been 25 years since it happened, and I lived in Keizer for the first 11 years of my life, I've decid

Update on my life & Jack

Well, Wednesday has come and gone. We had a little bit of snow all three days (Thu, Fri and Sat.) Right now, I'd say there's still about an inch of snow out there (it just won't go away!) I've also been working on Jack & the Beanstalk quite a lot. I'm two-thirds of the way finished with level 2. I don't want to post an update right now (because I just did about two hours ago, but I spiced up the title screen a little bit. I put Jack running back and forth side to side. When the title screen

Upcoming releases

GoSub 2 is coming out next month. And Alien Greed 3 is coming out in September. I'm really looking forward to hearing your opinions on AG3, I think it's the best game in the series (so far). It's so different from the others (although the cart collecting aspect is still there.) ET will make another appearance, and this time, the detective from the 2600 ET game will too. Neo and I just have to make some final touches to AG3. It's really 99% finished. So all you Alien Greed series lovers, rejoice.

Upcoming DS games I want

Well, the DS is slowly winding down to the end of its lifespan. That doesn't mean it can't have good games come out. Here's a list of what I want that'll be coming out in the coming months: Atari's Greatest Hits Vol. 1 - 11/2/10 Atari's Greatest Hits Vol. 2 - 3/8/11 Centipede - 3/29/11 Intellivision Lives! - 10/19/10 Jeopardy! - 11/2/10 Mario Vs. DK : Miniland Mayhem - 11/14 Powershot Pinball Constructor - Q4 2010 Super Scribblenauts - 10/12 Wheel of Fortune - 11/2/10   Since my birth

Up project

While researching the number of albums out there named "Up", I discovered a fourth one by ABC made in 1989. So that brings the total to four, although I doubt this one made its way to CD, though. I could be (hopefully) wrong. A pretty popular name for albums. If you know of any more bands who made an album called Up, please post a reply. So far I have: 1.) Shania Twain (Up!) 2.) Peter Gabriel 3.) Great Big Sea 4.) ABC (the band, not the network) This makes me thirsty for some 7-Up!

Up & Down

For years I have wanted a copy of a game beginning with the letter U to complete the 2600 alphabet. (Unfortunately I can't play Xenophobe on my TV because it rolls like it's PAL when it's really NTSC. It does great on my digital TV. Perhaps I should just move the 2600 to the digital TV where every game can be played. Hmm...) I have a goal to get to 350 officially made Atari 2600 cartridges. By "officially made", it means any official game released by Atari or any other company back then or throu

Working with icons in Photoshop sure is a chore and hard to do, and I'd MUCH rather do it in MSPaint. First off, you can't just select one of the 256 pixels and change its color. No, that'd be too easy. Anyway, I thought I'd work on my website a little. I have a whole bunch of sections of it, and I just thought I'd see whether these individual sections can have their own icons. I thought I'd tackle the section on the unofficial Cherriots homepage first, since it's been neglected for a while. Aft

Unfinished Symphony

More like "Symphony I Gave Up On." I'm trying to make a MIDI and am having no luck on what notes to use in the bass part (calliope 8va, track 2) once I get to part B of the song. It's the music from level 1 of Rayman Raving Rabbids for GBA, but you don't really have to know that in order to help me out here. Pick some notes that sound good with what I have (track 1 - Vibraphone and track 3 - Whistle). I don't care which, just any that sound good. I'd really like to submit this to vgmusic.com!
