Ishido: The Way of Stones

Just when you thought Shanghai was the only Lynx game featuring tiles, here's Ishido. The point of this game is to get all the tiles on the board. All tiles that touch each other must be of the same color and/or design. While it sounds easy, it is tough. A little too tough if you ask me. Six colors is a little too many for a game such as this. While a fun little time-waster, it is probably impossible to fit all the pieces on the board in such a manner that the game requires you to, unless you ha

Lemons rising from the grave

In March I was making a series of short 11 minute films, a TV show except it's not airing anywhere, called "My History Teacher Ate Lemons." I had about three episodes done when my computer died. All I had backed up on an SD card were videos for the show. Well, last night, I went to work making new episodes with what I had. I also filmed some new stuff. I am back to where I was before, with three episodes completed. I decided to back them up on a disc, but the disc will only be accessible if I ha

Wii-U first impressions

I got a Wii-U. Apparently Fred Meyer opened at midnight to sell them, and when I got there at 8am, they still had a few 8gb ones left. So I got one. The controller is freaking huge. Way bigger than a 3DS. And you have to plug the controller in separately. And there are no yellow/white/or red wires any more, so you can't play this on a CRT TV. Luckily, I had a HDMI output on my new TV, but it took me a few more minutes to figure out how to make the TV display what was plugged into the first HDMI

The Triangle song

This all started coincidentally. I had bought a compilation CD off the internet called "Two A.D." since I had "One A.D." (collections of ambient songs. I blame my sixth grade teacher for this. She made us listen to One A.D. and I admit I liked it. So I asked where she got it and I went and got it myself. Back then sixth grade was in elementary school. I was the last class to have sixth grade in elementary school so I got to begin seventh grade and not be the youngest class in it. Years later, I

GoSub's future?

I'm wondering if continuing working on this project is worthwhile. Even the inclusion of an octopus hasn't yielded any enthusiasm from anyone. If nobody seems to care, then I might as well quit working on it. Even negative comments would make me want to work on this, trying to make the game better, but no comments from anyone gets me real discouraged. And I deleted a Fatso! clip from YouTube because it allegedly matched third party content, which it didn't. The stupid third party matching conten

Insecticide for VB finished

I have been working off and on (mostly off) for the past 6 years or so on Insecticide for the Virtual Boy. I think I'm at a good stopping point and I deem it done. But that's not to say I'm done with VB programming entirely. I have a new idea I want to attempt for the Virtual Boy. Basically what you do is explore around trying to find a pineapple. The pineapple is like the Legend of Zelda's Triforce of this new game idea I have in mind. Only it's supposed to be a humorous silly game with silly e

My 175-year-old

I was going through my stuff when I saw my 174 year old coin I have. The date on it is 1838. It's a US Large Cent. Got it for about $17 out of a coin magazine ad. This was back in 2007 or so. I checked on eBay and similar coins are going for about $40-50, some even higher. My coin is pretty dirty, but everything is still readable. I think I tried cleaning it once when I first got it (hey, it was only $17, I thought.) No luck. I guess 170-year-old dirt is sticky. The back is better than the front

Super Mario 64 2600

I got bored again, so I thought to myself, I wonder if Super Mario 64 can be ported to the 2600. So I began coding, which eventually gave way to pounding the computer a few times (to knock some sense into it), and that eventually gave way to this. Birds are chirping in the background as Mario walks around, just like in the N64 version. He can enter the castle, but it doesn't do anything. If people like this, maybe I'll turn this into a full-fledged game. Wander off the beaten path, maybe you'll

bite sized music

So I got bored again, and thought about writing some music. So I did. I have this ongoing project called "My Butt Hurts." It's kind of like Nine Inch Nails' "Ghosts," only the songs are strung together. Each piece lasts anywhere from one minute to two (I think one lasted three). Right now I'm on the seventh one, called "My Butt Hurts Part 7." Each one so far has been at least 15 minutes long, so I'm about half-way done with part 7. But I'm never going to be done with the whole My Butt Hurts thin

Neo Geo Pocket Color

Hi gang, I went back and got the last one. There was originally two, but one had been bought, so I bought the other one. The games that came with it are Samurai Showdown 2, Metal Slug 1st Mission, King of Fighters 3D, and Neo Turf Masters. None of these games I'm exactly thrilled about getting, but the gray system is in good shape and only has a few scratches on the left side of the screen. So if anyone has any interesting games for this new addition to my library, please PM me. Actually, I am e

Super Mario 64 2600 (part 3)

Well, what's behind door #1? You can find out yourself by playing the binary. I worked a little more on the game last night and you can now enter the left door. I had wondered why the players stopped working and went berzerk and found out that it was because I had put the game at 8k. Now it should work from here on out. I would really like to make a 64k 2600 game. I wish it was possible using bB. If I have to use the DPC+ then so be it, but that feels a lot like cheating, which is why I haven't

Odyssey 2 - Insecticide

Since it's a boring Saturday, I decided to program something interesting for the Odyssey 2. but what? My I game isn't going anywhere, and I got sick of it, so I wanted to program something else. I got to thinking about my Virtual Boy game Insecticide, and thought it would be fun to port it to the Odyssey 2. After all, even the Odyssey 2 has more colors than the Virtual Boy. I was having extreme difficulties getting the stupid thing to work right, until I discovered start must be directly underne

Scrapyard Dog

This game had a good idea in mind, but finished with a very poor execution. Here are my gripes. First off, if you want to play the game, you have to go through about 3 or four screens, angrily pressing the A button to skip the story screens you've seen about 5 zillion times. Next, there's this point in the second level that is very difficult to pass. It involves a crane going up and down over a pit. If you touch either the crane or the pit, you die. And even if i get past that point, there's sev

My stomach hurts sometimes.

For the last few days, I've developed a stomach thing where suddenly and unexpectedly I feel like I need to poop urgently. Because of this, I have not been able to get to the post office to mail the Dodgeball Odyssey game out. I'm thinking of just having mom do it. Actually, I haven't been anywhere the last few days cuz of my stomach bug thing. You should hear my farts. When I do, they're like thunder. And RT, if you're reading this, I don't need to take anything because I usually don't have thi

VHS: When did it stop?

I remember when the first Jackass movie came out and I wanted to get it. I went into a now-long-gone Suncoast location and asked the lady working there where it was. She pointed me to the DVD display. At the time, I didn't have a DVD player, so I got the VHS version. The movie has a copyright date of 2003, so it must have been the year I did this. Which brings me to today, where I was watching an old tape from 2002 and they advertised movies on VHS and DVD. So I am wondering: When did movies sto

No reason to play Tetris anymore

I had my all-time high score in Tetris and I lost the camcorder! It's still missing. I wonder where it went. Luckily, my digital camera doubled as a camcorder, so I was able to save what had happened, as well as take a picture of it. My hands were shaking once I hit the 300,000 mark, but after a few more Tetrises at >140 lines, this is what I had ended up with. I doubt I can ever top this, so there's really no point in me playing Tetris any more, at least the Game Boy version...

Alien Greed 5 (part 3)

As for RT's comment in part 1. Alien Greed 3 was similar to E.T. People bought it. Alien Greed 4 was similar to Adventure. People bought it. And there are hacks being sold in the Atari Age store right now. There's a whole section devoted to Atari 2600 hacks. So why not? It's just a 4k game, so the price would probably be lower than AG3 or 4 anyway. Anyway, if this is a good idea, I did a quick sketch of what I'd like the label to look like. This is not the final label, just a quick mock-up. I'd

Nintendo Power

I was saddened that Nintendo Power was going to end. I had subscribed from 1993-2009 or so. Then I was happy because it's not going to end. God damnit, I'm not going to let the magazine die. I'll make my OWN Nintendo Power. So starting Holiday 2012, I will make a bi-monthly magazine devoted to Nintendo, which means I'll have to buy the Wii U and review it. That will be issue 1 (or whatever number they stop at.) Let's just hope the Wii U has New Super Mario Bros. Mii as a launch title, or at leas

i is for intentional bank jumps

So I have decided to make Lowercase I 8k. The way I'm going to set it up is thusly: The game automatically starts in bank 3. It will jump from bank 3 to bank 2. From bank 2 it will jump to bank 0. From bank 0 it must jump back to bank 3 since BIOS will not allow a jump from bank 0 to 1. So this means at the beginning of bank 3, I must put a bit of code that if the screen number is greater than 0, then jump to bank 1, where the ending will eventually be. My brain hurts just from that. This also

MIDI, won't I? part 2

As it turns out, a hacker got into the site. I checked a few minutes ago and the number of files dropped again from 22 to 19! As part of working their problem out, they disabled the uploading files page, which is bad cuz I have a new NES MIDI, and it's not that often I have a new MIDI to submit. Hopefully this'll end up in an update. I was wondering when someone would notice the new-files page would have over 3,000 MIDIs on it, too bad it was a hacker that noticed it first.

Found art!

For a while now I had been wondering where my figures of a lady and a bird went to. Well, a thought about where they might be just came to me out of the blue. So, I pushed aside my Atari 2600 collection in front of a corner cabinet, opened the cabinet and there they were. I made these about 5 or so years ago, and the glue I used still holds to this very day. I made the lady out of a bottle, glued a light switch on it, and put in the bottle hole some light-bulb shaped thing. Having another spare

Joust

I never did like Joust. The controls are lousy on each and every version, and the Lynx version is no different. I like the game concept, but the controls ruin it for me. I haven't played it for a long time and it took me a while to find out what to do (pounce on top of the other birds) and get the eggs that pop out of them. And then there's the fact that starting on wave 3, there's two pits of lava that the stupid bird can die in. Man I wish there were "teddy bear" versions of each game on the L

One deadly eraser

So earlier tonight I went to work on Stickman. Tonight's goals: Make the eraser deadly, and also add a game over screen. Yeah, I was feeling pretty ambitious, but you know what? I was able to do both. I think I broke something when I added the game over screen, so I went in the rapinit.s file and changed all the backgrounds to active. That fixed it. I don't know why. And also, I made the eraser deadly. If it touches mister Stickman, he dies. I'm going for an Odyssey 2 feel, but I may change it i

Scrabble for the DS

I went to Best Buy today and bought Scrabble for the DS. I played it for about an hour (3 games) and I beat the computer AI on level 1 twice and level 2 once. Next time I feel like playing this game, I'm going to try and see if I can beat the AI on level 3. I question the computer's Scrabble-playing abilities, though. Most of the time, it builds either 2 or 3 letter words. Only once did it build a 6-letter word ("SPRITE" on a triple word score) and zoomed ahead of me by 30 points. I naturally ca

2-4 beaten!

So I thought I would come back to Super Mario 3D Land for some more PAIN. I had tried beating 2-4 way too many times and I was wondering how come I never got an invisible Tanooki suit. I just had to look before the beginning! So I got it and even though since I was now invisible, jumping into the abyss and losing a life was still a possibility. But somehow I managed to make my way to the flag and I completed the level. On level 2's airship, I died once because of the stupid 3D aspect of it. I th
