Game Gear!

Well, I can get my Game Gear to work in a weird way without using the AC Power Adaptor. Mind you I don't know why this works, or how I made it work, but it does. If I turn it on and then touch the hole where the adaptor goes, it turns on. It works with the adaptor as well, but it needs to be in a certain position inside the hole for it to work. Weird. I'm guessing the AC adaptor pin is screwed up. I tried to unscrew the screws to get inside there, but it's too hard. Is there any way to "soften"

Short Trax

I'm making a list of songs under 30 seconds long. It's not very long yet, but I'd like some contributions to make the list grow. If you know of any, send them my way and I'll add them. The list is here. It's practically the same design as a list of long songs I know of, only these are short ones. Maybe some day I can get over 800 like the long song list.

Music

I got Prince's Symbol album because of the song called "7". It goes good with the song called "8" by Sunny Day Real Estate. Now all I need are songs called "1", "2", "3", "4", "5", "6" and "9" and I'm all set. I saw a Lenny Kravitz album called "5", but there was no song on it called "5". Darn. I'm working on making a new album. It's basically me playing a bunch of songs I've composed on the piano. Some have words, some don't. I recorded myself playing the BMX Airmaster theme, but alas I have no

Valentine's Day

Happy Valentines Day! Yesterday, I went downtown and got me two records. The first one was Van Morrison's "Common One", one I have been looking for because it has two 15-minute songs on it ('Summertime In England', and 'When Heart Is Open'). I like 'Summertime In England' better because it actually has drumming on it. This is my first Van Morrison recording I own. The second one was Vanilla Fudge's "Near the Beginning", another one I have been looking for mainly because of side 2's 'Break Song'

More with Virtual Dieter

Read about the game here. I want the finished project to be 2k, which is getting harder with each version. I had to make the game less beautiful by having two 1-colored sprites instead of three 2-colored sprites. I added a weight-loss pill, though, something that was missing in the first version. So far, my highest score has been 200 on the latest version. After compressing over and over again, I have 6 bytes left. The good news is I don't see any bugs. That's a good reason for writing <4k ga

You never know

So I go to my video game store, and there were the usual three 2600 games there, plus an addition: Porky's. So I end up paying $2 for it. The guy there was saying how great the movie was. I didn't want to say "I haven't seen it, I just bought this because it was a 2600 game I don't have." He asked me where I found it, and I pointed behind me and said "over there." where the 2600 games were located, all three of them. There were a couple new Jaguar games too, but I don't have a Jaguar so I didn't

43 Lynx games

That's my total. I just got Jimmy Connors Tennis and Basketbrawl in the mail yesterday. In the tennis game, the ball is like 3 pixels by 3 pixels, and with the tennis racket not much bigger than that, it's VERY hard to hit the ball, let alone serve it. One of the rare times when Realsports Tennis and Activision's Tennis for the 2600 is better than a Lynx game. I wonder if Jimmy Connors had a Lynx and played his own game. I wonder if he was any good at it. Anyway, I've decided to sell most of my

Jungle Monkey

I made a game called Jungle Monkey. Look at it in the Batari Basic forums. I was going to submit this to the 2008 Minigame Compo, but I decided it's basically dead, which is too bad. In other news, I'm waiting for 2 Lynx games I ordered. I'm thinking they might come later today or tomorrow. So, again, we'll wait and see what happens. I'm going to play my Atari 2600 a lot. I figure with almost 200 games, I can go for about 24 hours. I'm not sure if the 2600 can handle a 24-hour gaming marathon,

Top 7 - January 2008

Here's what I've been playing last month:   #1 - Mario Kart DS #2 - Strat-O-Gems Deluxe (2600) #3 - Block Out (Lynx) #4 - Columns (Game Gear) #5 - Mario Bros. (2600) #6 - Pinball Jam (Lynx) #7 - Zarlor Mercenary (Lynx)   I hope to get some 2-D Tetris action in this month, and fire up my neglected original Game Boy (aka red Game Boy Pocket). Here's the thought for today: "The Rain In Oregon Stays Mainly in the Valleys."

Stuff for Groundhog Day

I got Zarlor Mercenary in the mail today, which brings my total # of Lynx games up to 41. And I also found a movie that aired on TV that began with the letter Q, so I taped it and now I'm burning it onto DVD, which would bring my total # of movies that begin with the letter Q to 4. I'm going to Best Buy tomorrow to see if I can find some more (I bought "the Qucik and the Dead" there), and hopefully I'll find another one (I'm looking particularly for Quest For Camelot, Quiz Show, Quadrophenia, an

DTV madness!

OK, here's the situation with the Disney Valentine's Day special. Apparently lots of people want it. So what I've done is asked a guy I know who hosts his own website to add it to his collection of videos on said site. That way, I can just redirect them to the site. Meantime, I'll try to make time to make a master copy (next time I'm really really bored, I don't like the special myself), so I can mail it to people on demand with just a couple of mouse clicks and about a few hours of time . But

I Thinx Lynx

I'm going to get 3 Lynx games within the next week with two money orders. Yes, more. The games are Zarlor Mercenary, Jimmy Connors Tennis and Basketbrawl. So, that will bring my total to 43 once they all come. I also got Mario Bros. for the Atari 2600 in the mail on Monday, so I'm not neglecting it. Also, who is Santiago Nunnez, and why does he want me to join Refriendz? I keep getting e-mails saying 'Santiago Nunnez wants you to join Refriendz'. And, there was more snow last evening. It was a

Flirting with flurries

We got snow. Not very much, like a trace or so, but, it's the most we've got so far this winter. It started Sunday morning, and then melted. More came later that night at about 8. These were the biggest snowflakes I've ever seen in my life. It snowed once more before I went to bed at midnight. When I woke up at 6 AM, snow was on the street where at midnight there wasn't any. The schools closed for the whole day. And then it melted, and at 9AM everything was fine. Apparently, it's supposed to be

Visit my comic!

Psst, you. Yeah, you. Visit my comic. It updates every Sunday. Sunday is good. Visit it here. In other news, I did go to Game Crazy. I bought 4 SMS games. I'm wondering who made Wonder Boy because it's basically Adventure Island. I got it for $5 even though it said $14.99, when the guy told me my total, i was like what?! and he said "did you notice this game was $14.99?" and then I was like, I don't want it any more. and he said "Well, I'll give it to you for 5 bucks." True story. I also got Zil

SNES on GBA

I think I'll start collecting SNES games on GBA. There can't be that many, and I already have these: +DKC +DKC2 +SMW +Yoshi's Island   I know there's DKC3, but I'll have to get one used with all the levels beaten on it because when I had it on SNES there was this one stage I couldn't get past, and I broke it out of anger and had to throw it away (I had really horrible anger fits when I was a teenager.) I know there's also EWJ (don't know if EWJ2 is on GBA or not.) I'll look through all my

30%

That's the chance that snow will fall here tomorrow. Not very likely, but might be possible. And if not then, then there's more chances this weekend. (I don't know how since the lows will be a little above freezing.) In other news, the 2005 Super Bowl had Paul McCartney play at halftime, not Janet Jackson. So when did the Janet Jackson thing happen? Must've been 2004. Doesn't seem like that long ago. I only recorded the commercials of the 2003 and 2004 Super Bowl. It was in 2005 that I decided t

Past Super Bowls

Right now I'm converting Super Bowl XXXIX (2005) onto DVD from VHS. The VHS tape was playing bad in my old player, and it plays almost perfectly in my new one. Unfortunately I didn't tape the Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake halftime show (From then on, I decided to tape them, but neither Mick Jagger nor Prince has had a wardrobe malfunction.) I put in a tape from 1986 earlier that was playing bad in my old player; again, flawless in the new one. So I was able to get a Bob Packwood ad onto DVD (r

YouTube madness

Just when you thought you had enough pages to keep track of on YouTube, in pops this: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=kwvtads It's mine, and like the user name implies, it's ads from KWVT, the small local channel Salem has. And I do get permission from the companies involved before I post their ads. The latest "victim" is KWVT themselves. I uploaded one of their station identification pieces. I might get one uploaded next Sunday if I get permission from the Willamette Queen, a riverboat co

Brr!

I really should be thankful I don't live in places like the Great Lakes region or the mid U.S., where apparently the highs are in the single digits. But it seems like the Pacific Northwest won't escape the cold Arctic air mass this time, as the first part of the week's lows are supposed to be low 20s and teens, and highs will struggle to get above freezing. Unfortunately, there is no chance of any snow as it will be dry. I wanted it to be this way in like September, but I'm sick of it. I wish it

Too many boxes!

That's the downside of ordering all this stuff. You get stuck with the boxes they come in. I must have like 10 cardboard boxes that games came in, 2600 or Lynx. Well, I added another one to my "collection" with the arrival of Robosquash and Malibu Bikini Volleyball. I just put in Malibu Bikini Volleyball to see if it works (it did), and I played a little bit of Robosquash. I like the concept, but in the end, I found it a little too difficult for me to be playing on a regular basis, even on the e

More Lynx stuff coming

I sent a MO for Robosquash and Malibu Bikini Volleyball on Friday, so I should be receiving those two games soon, which would bring my total to 40. There's three more games I could get for a low price and I might get all three of them at once instead of the usual two at a time I order, which would then bring my total to 43, which would be about half of all the official Lynx releases. I'd get the homebrew ones (like Alpine Games) but they're too gosh darn expensive, although it looks like I'll ha

Waiting for announcements

I'm waiting for two announcements. #1 - "The 2008 Minigame Compo is now open." Then I can lose again for the third straight year. I shouldn't say that. I didn't come in last with Smiley (the 4k game). The Frogger-like 2k game got slaughtered though. I'm still mad at Zyx and Ants from 2006. I admit, they sucked, and I wanted them pulled from the competition, but they convinced me not to. Ants came in second-to-last in the 4k category and Zyx came in dead last. This year, I plan to put in Virtual

Another 2k game

Well, I made a game using 2k. Barely. I have 4 bytes left. I plan to put this game in the 2008 Minigame Compo, that is, if there is one. This one is called "Virtual Dieter." I tried making this game very early on in my batari Basic programming, but this one is a lot better. It's kind of like a reverse Fast Food in which you dodge the food instead of eating it. If you touch the food, your stomach grows bigger. The game ends when your stomach reaches the other edge of the screen.

Empire of the Ants

The ants have invaded the den again. So I sprayed Raid, hoping that will stop. They're probably not dead because of the mild winter we've had so far. I hope it gets below freezing again so the ants will freeze to death. Anyway, I was rummaging through my papers and I came across this crossword I made. I duplicated it on my computer (it was hand-made), and made a few changes, but for a first effort for a huge crossword, it's nothing much. I used the word "attend" twice, "kat" twice, and probably

Rygar

This is a platform game on the Lynx. The A button is for attacking and B is for jumping. While this would be confusing on a normal platformer, it works well in Rygar's case because there's not much jumping in the earlier levels. By the time you get to levels which involve complex jumping, you're used to the setup. But sometimes, there are jumps that you can barely clear *and* you have to attack enemies. This can be frustrating sometimes, as I lose a life most of the time in these spaces. Luckily
