Apparently I look under 17...

So I go to Wal-Mart to buy GTA: Chinatown Wars for my DS collection. When I said I wanted it, the guy asked "are you mature enough?" I said yes, and when we got back to the counter (I have no idea why Wal-Mart keeps video games in those cages. I bet they get tired of people asking them to open them to get games out for them.), he goes ahead and asks for my ID! I don't know why, I have a moustache and everything (I'm 26), but apparently I look way younger than i actually am. Well, with that out o

Aparently new computer time

The computer I have just crashed again for the second time in two days. I had to force it off and back on again, and both times it did CHKSCN or whatever that program is that has a bunch of numbers on a black screen when you turn on the computer and it says "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency." So I don't know what to do here. Should I go with an Apple computer like a Macintosh or something (do they still even make them?) or should I just get Windows 10? I've read that for the

Anyone hungry for chicken nuggets?

I began the process of putting chicken nuggets in the hamburgers game. The chicken nugget will begin appearing on level 2, so this screenshot is impossible. I just put it in level 1 for a test. Right now it's just a static image, but I hope I can get it moving. And get it in any level after 1. And not have it appear very often yet still random. I'll make it so the maximum amount of lives you can have is 9. So what does it do? Once I get it all programmed, if you touch the chicken nugget, yo

Any time but now

We could have some late winter snowfall here, the local stations are saying between nothing and 4 inches. That will be anywhere between Tuesday night and Thursday. I'm all for it. And I have learned that THQ, makers of the uDraw game tablet, are making a fourth game for it that will be out April 12: SpongeBob SquigglePants. So what I'm basically doing is wishing it was any time besides now. Since there's no mail delivery tomorrow, I'm not going to get my game.com games I ordered until at least T

Any bird experts here?

So there's this bird sitting on a chair in the courtyard out front. I was looking outside, and he wasn't moving, so I went and got my camera. By the time I came back about 15 seconds later, he was still there. I tried to take his picture. The blinds got in the way and the camera wanted to focus in on the blinds and not what was outside. The fourth time was the charm, and I got this. Now there's a question: What type of bird is he (or it could be a her, I guess.) I'm no bird expert, and so I d

Ants.

Another ant-filled day here at the Read residence. Mom keeps saying she thinks Terro traps and Terminix are enough. Yeah. I'm beginning to think she's enjoying the ants all over the kitchen counter. Like that old Far Side cartoon where the kids are enjoying the fact that the slugs are back: I'm not in a very good mood. I tried to get saving progress in Frank the Fruit Fly and failed miserably. She refuses to do anything about the ants, citing multiple inane reasons. So you'd think she'd be a

Ants! version 9/Memories of my Childhood

Well, I finally got the tan ant moving around the screen. I made the code a lot shorter and little by little, progress is being made on this game. Check it out here. At that link, you can check out the code as well as get the rom for the O2EM emulator.   As a teenager, I used to listen to my mom's "Along Came the Association" by the Association record, especially two tracks: Don't Blame It On Me and Message of Our Love. This was in the mid '90s, I guess. Well today, I converted those two son

Ants! for the Odyssey^2

OK, I have made some progress on my Ants! game thanks to the Videopac forums. This version is for the Odyssey^2, and if or when it ever gets completely finished, I'd like to sell it somehow. So, the score is perfect, the ant collision detection is working OK, and the walls are working (instead of the walls themselves, I limited it to the position the little green guy is in to make sure he doesn't even touch the walls.) But there's one problem: I want to know what I should do next. I'd like to li

Ants on the Odyssey 2

Well, I got a few Odyssey 2 games in the mail. That prompted me to work on Ants for the Odyssey 2 again, even though I have no idea what I'm doing. There is a working ROM, but it's very early on and I doubt it will change unless I can get help. I've included the ROM and source in a page I made for the game here. Also there is a list of stuff I'd like to do. Basically what I've done so far is copied some example somewhere and tweaked it to get the ant and alien showing up. I understand a tiny bit

Ants on the Jaguar.

So I gave up on Stickman. It wasn't working anyway. So I decided to try to work on something different. I was up all night. I got so angry my eye hurt and proceeded to barf up everything I ate that evening. I went to sleep. I woke up. Worked on it more. But I eventually got it done. Now there's Ants on the Jaguar. Most of the time was spent trying to make the word "Ants" and having one ant not be all distorted and having it look correct. That was where all the anger came from. Now all that's mi

Ants on the Atari 2600

So I'm basically trying to do the same thing I was trying to do on the Jaguar on the Atari 2600. Things are going much better since I moved. I wanted to do this in assembly, but I didn't know how to do the arm technique in assembly. And I think it's going to end up being 4k anyway, so I figured why not do it in bB? The result so far: This is after a few hours' work on it. I think it's actually better than the Jag version since it's only one ant instead of three. You can focus on squishing that

Ants came back on the Jaguar

So I thought for some reason about the Jaguar. I guess it was reading that thread about the sd card cartridge that got me inspired. I decided to see what I could do with Ants, that game I was having trouble with. I switched the music player from the U-235 one which I was having major troubles and bugs with, to the Zeroplayer one. The Zeroplayer works okay now, but unfortunately, all I can fit on there are about 10-20 second-long tunes. The Zeroplayer unfortunately does not do .mod files, so I

Ants a la Cart

Voila! Thanx to the kind people at 8 Bit Classics, (8bitclassics.com) I now have a cart of my very own of a game that I made. Next month, Super Maria Sisters will get the cart treatment. Since I can't draw very well (seeing as how the Ants label artwork is), it'll be more of a text-style label, done in my weird way. If anyone wants Super Maria Sisters, I give permission to give it to 8 Bit Classics (or any other Atari 2600 game makers) to make 1 cart. So, in other words, don't get rich off my

Ants

So I had ants keep coming in my bathroom. Perhaps a couple every time I went in. So I put two Terro traps in there and went to sleep. When I woke up about 12 hours later, there were about 200 or so ants, with an additional at least 50 dead in the traps themselves. This is crazy. Since I wanted to be able to use my bathroom and not the other one, I went to work killing all them, and I put the ant-covered traps outside. It must have taken me 20 minutes to make sure all the ants I could see were de

Ants

I was poking around my computer, finding stuff that I forgot about, when I ran across my old Ants game for the 2600. No, not the very old game, the more recent one which was a port of the Jaguar game I was working on. So I continued where I left off and added some more stuff. I have 952 bytes left until I run out of room for 4k and then have to make it 8k.   I don't know what to add or change, though. I put a whole bunch of sound effects in the game yesterday, working while it sounded

Another Turbo-Grafx 16 game

Well, I just bought Bonk's Adventure for the Turbo-Grafx 16 (or at least I think I did.) I *was* going to buy it via the Goat Store, but they lost my business because they're apparently getting ready for some classic gaming show. So I resorted to eBay. So sometime early next month, I will have more than just Keith Courage and Splatterhouse to play on it. As it turns out, I think I might have saved a few dollars by going somewhere else. Digital Press says the game's worth $15 complete, and that's

Another ton of notes

So I'm half-way done on sequencing "A Nightmare To Remember." Apart from a few mistakes that are still there after checking to see if I was sequencing everything and it seemed OK, things are going well. I'm a little behind on the times it says in the book. What is supposed to be the lyrics change from time to time from electric guitar to piano (depending on the current mood of the song.) One thing I'm not even going to try to attempt is the drums. I left a track open in case someone wants to try

Another thing I forgot about

The downside of doing multiple things is that I forget I did stuff and it just sits there being unused and forgot about. I had made some Word Warp puzzles every week. I just simply forgot about that. I had a few done for a few weeks ahead in August 2013, but then forgot about them. Why did I think of that? Well, I did the one in the paper today. All four clues I got. And that made me remember, "Hey, I should make a few Word Warp puzzles like I used to." So I did. Hopefully I won't forget about t

Another sprite designing plea

I need help with sprite drawing again. This time it's for the Virtual Boy. As you might have guessed, it's for Craig the Cranberry. And as much as I love bananas, I can't seem to draw them very well. The VIDE program turns all the shades of color into the three shades of red and black the Virtual Boy can display. So in order to know what's going on, I use white for the highest red, yellow for medium, and red for low. As a result, this is what the banana looks like before I convert it with VIDE.

Another Snow Update

The schools here are two hours late, as there is ice in various spots (not where I am, though.) Mom said there was lots of ice downtown. It must have snowed a bit last night as there is around half-an-inch on the ground (some of it melted earlier.) It's been snowing *very* lightly the past 15 minutes or so, but I think it stopped now. The snow advisory continues until 10 am Pacific. There could be more snow Wednesday night into Thursday, so we'll just have to see about that.

Another Saturday night

I finished the website I was making. I decided to make a new publication about computers. You can find it here at big belch computer news. It is a lovely thing. In issue 1 I talk about the Supervision, show off some smileys I made, and share my favorite websites with you. Computers are hard though. I was having a hard time uploading it because it kept giving me a message saying I didn't have permission to view my own website building tools. How nice.   I worked on X vs. O as well. I go

Another return of burgers

I decided to work today on Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland 2, my sequel game for the Game Gear. A few nights ago, I had an idea for a level: Why not at a fast-food restaurant? I also discovered I needed to make the lowest milkshake level possible a bit lower. One can just go to the bottom and sit there without anything hitting you. Of course, you'll never pass the level and you certainly won't get any points for doing so, But in the interest of making a good game, I'll lower it...o

Another rejection letter...

One time, I submitted a comic to King Features Syndicate and Universal Press Syndicate. Only King Features Syndicate was nice enough to send me a rejection letter. This was of a Far Side clone called "47 Meatballs." Well, since then, I've been making a webcomic about a 13-year-old girl named Jessica called, appropriately enough, "Jessica." So, I've decided to give this one a try, but before I do, I need to look through about 200 comics I've done in the past 3 years and redraw them to fit a daily

another Huge Crossword finished

I love crosswords, both making them and solving them. I've made a few really big ones, 29x29, which is bigger than the Sunday ones and even bigger than the 25x25 one in every issue of Games magazine. A while back I must have posted a blog entry about this, but last night I finally got around to making the clues for it. Checking to see if I use the same words twice is a hassle, but needs to be done IMO. After the clues are all sorted out and there are all non-repeated words, then I can call the t
