Bert's head

I think we all know Bert is hard to draw. Even at that, imagine drawing it with programing using Atari 2600 assembly. I wanted to put Bert's head on the title screen of my game. This is the first attempt: Bert's pupils are yellow, which made him look weird. So I went for a hunt on how to make them black. Then I found a way to make them green. So I changed the background color to gray (Bert just had to have black hair.) While I was programming it, it magically changed size and this is

Game Gear Reviews

A new decade, a new e-zine. I've decided since the Game Gear isn't very popular, that I've decided to start writing a monthly e-zine dedicated to the Game Gear. Since there appears to be no homebrew scene, all I can really write about then is reviews, so I made issue 1 of Game Gear Reviews, a monthly 6-page e-zine in .pdf format. Please download it and tell me what you think. I'm in the midst of writing a second issue, but should there be more after that? Also, I'm back working on "Kirby 2600" a

Playing the 2600

I haven't been playing the 2600 much lately, so I thought i'd take it for a spin. The first game that I popped in was Bowling. IMO, it's much better than the version found on Wii Sports because it gets rid of the motion control sensors (which I suck at) and it's just bowling at its purest. While it is basically a random number generator, within 15 minutes of playing it, I was able to get 5 strikes in a row in one game, and scored 230 in another. My highest score in Wii Sports for the about 9 mo

Terrance & Phillip 2

The full title for this game is "Terrance & Phillip: Not Without My Anus", but I bet most people will call this Terrance & Phillip 2, or, to make it even shorter, T&P2. And I've begun work on it. There's a thread about this game in the batari Basic forum, where you can download the very first binary. Level 1 is swimming, a type of level I didn't get to do in the first game because I couldn't figure out how. Only problem is: The Terrance swimming sprite looks horrible. Maybe you can d

Oldies and semi-oldies

I went and got a Procol Harum CD. I have "Something Magic" and the Live with the Edmonton Symphony one on vinyl, but I have never heard the true version on "In Held 'Twas In I" (there's a live version on the Edmonton Symphony album). I also tried again with the other CD i got at the same place that had clicks in it. It still did, and I ripped the affected song on my computer in MP3 format and was wondering whether there's a free tool that i could download online to get rid of them. It's weird, b

GoSub for Virtual Boy update

After 8 months of off and on work, I am proud to announce that I am ready to release version 1.0 of GoSub for Virtual Boy. You can download the ROM for use on an emulator here. So what is my next Virtual Boy game? I'm not sure. I'd like to do something in the vein of Pitfall!, where a guy moves from screen to screen avoiding enemies and getting treasures, but I'm not sure whether I have the programming skills to make that or not. Well, anyway, enjoy!

A tale of two fish

So I waited for the snow to come. It's midnight now, and there isn't any. Kind of hard to snow when it's 35. I was hoping for visible, white dots falling from the sky, but I guess it's not going to happen this time. I got the fish design back. I took another stab at designing a fish. This is my result: While it looks weird, when you put it in motion it looks better. But I need your help. Which one do you like better? I found a bug pertaining to the score in version 97 that

Another sprite designing plea

I need help with sprite drawing again. This time it's for the Virtual Boy. As you might have guessed, it's for Craig the Cranberry. And as much as I love bananas, I can't seem to draw them very well. The VIDE program turns all the shades of color into the three shades of red and black the Virtual Boy can display. So in order to know what's going on, I use white for the highest red, yellow for medium, and red for low. As a result, this is what the banana looks like before I convert it with VIDE.

Sonic R

I just placed an order with the Goat Store for Sonic R for the Sega Saturn. It's been a while since I got anything for my Saturn, and seeing as how the game store has no Saturn items (save Bust-A-Move with no long case or no instructions for $30!) I went with the ol' trusty Goat Store. I figured that since I like Mario Kart 64 that I would like a similar racing game for the same generation. As you can tell, I'm in a Saturn kind of mood today. I'm going to play my Saturn. Problem is, I don't real

Upcoming releases

GoSub 2 is coming out next month. And Alien Greed 3 is coming out in September. I'm really looking forward to hearing your opinions on AG3, I think it's the best game in the series (so far). It's so different from the others (although the cart collecting aspect is still there.) ET will make another appearance, and this time, the detective from the 2600 ET game will too. Neo and I just have to make some final touches to AG3. It's really 99% finished. So all you Alien Greed series lovers, rejoice.

That means only 100 more until 1,000! Pretty astounding since I've only been here since the end of May. I love my Atari! In a blog a couple months ago, I might have said I'd get to 1,000 posts by Christmas. That definitely isn't going to happen. Maybe by Jan. 15. Anyway, I went to Game Crazy, and they had hardly anything I wanted. Same ol' 2600 games (ones I already have), same ol' two boxed Inty games, Burgertime and some casino one (usless to me since I don't own an Intellivision). 1 or 2 78

Frank's continuing saga

Got an idea for a screen for Frank the Fruit Fly. Implementing it was really hard because it was a case of copying and pasting part of the code of a screen and then adapting it to suit the screen number you are working on. Which took an hour of yelling and cursing and trying to figure out why the button presses weren't working. But I finally figured it out. I do find it quite odd that I'm making a game for the Pokémon Mini that has nothing to do with Pokémon. The last time we left Frank, he wa

Storm fun

Well, I guess I can be thankful the power didn't go out. I heard on TV there were 2,000 people in my county with power outages. It isn't surprising since the strongest winds we've had so far was 40 mph at one time. It has been quite the windy week here. There was just another windstorm a few days ago. I think things have calmed down, though. I got Bonk's Adventure in the mail on Sunday morning. I went to go get Sunday's paper and to my surprise, there was the mail. The game is hard. I can't beat

Still sick

Well, i didn't think i would be able to sleep because of my stomach cramps and frequent diarrhea, but I did manage to go to sleep. When I woke up, I was still sick, although my stomach doesn't hurt any more. I still have diarrhea, and whenever i eat something, i'll barf it back up again. i haven't been taking my pills i'm supposed to because i figure why waste them? (I took them Sunday night, but probably barfed them back up on Monday morning, when my illness started.) And, with all of this goin

RIP Nikki 1992-2009

Mom just had the cat put to sleep. She had lived to be 16 years old. The people did come to work on the house, so this is officially day #9, but the cat takes top billing when it comes to blog titles today. They finished the floors and stuff, but right now, i'm really sad because my friggin cat died! At least she's not suffering any more.

TV: 60 years ago

I was watching my I Love Lucy thing I bought yesterday and today. So far, three episodes have been watched: the unaired pilot, the one where Lucy thinks Ricky is trying to murder her, and the Vitameatavegamin one. I was watching and it began to strike me: TV sure has changed in the last 60 years. We've gone from black and white to color and now ("thanks" to the US Government) to digital, there were only 4 stations back then (if you count DuMont), now there are hundreds of them. You could actuall

Lucky dog

I'm here at my sister's house using their computer while the family left to do various things. My sister's boyfriend John and my niece went to swim class, while my mom, sister, and my nephew went to get their other cat back from the vet. And at home is my dog, all alone, but he's lucky: We had left our air conditioner on. My sister's house doesn't have air conditioning, so I'm sitting here in the kitchen, sweating profusely. We came here because once everyone comes back, we will celebrate my nie

Digital Octopus

I now have Comcast's Classic channels. This includes stuff like Noggin, Fox Business Network, SiTV, ESPN Classic, VH1 Classic, etc. The guy who installed it for me in my room was nice, and boy did he work hard, going under the house, around the house, etc. putting the cable line into my room. And also, I've been working on GoSub for Virtual Boy. I've inserted an octopus, but right now he isn't programmed to move nor hurt your sub. I've attached a picture of what this will look like (from the act

Back to the 2600

I was looking at my VCS. Then it hit me. It started saying "Play me. And buy more games for me. You love that Virtual Boy more than you do me." So I plugged the VCS in and played some games: Midnight Magic, Jr. Pac-Man, Juno First, Video Pinball. Right now I'm listening to the theme from BMX Airmaster emanate through my TV's speakers. Last time I checked, I was stalled at 294 VCS games. So I made a goal: Get 300 by the end of the year. So I bought Mr. Do, so once that comes, I'll only need 5 to

No Quarter

Well, I got a couple new long songs for my collection today. Both are Led Zeppelin live ones. "Dazed and Confused" runs an amazingly long 33 minutes, and "No Quarter" runs for 21:21. Of the two, I like "No Quarter" better because it has a jam with a piano in the middle of it. This is from an apparently bootleg disc from Hungary. The cover has stuff in Cyrllic writing. I had no idea there were a bunch of Led Zeppelin fans there. We had the air conditioner guy come and look at it because it wasn't

sNOw

I stayed up until 4 am last night waiting for it to snow. It never did. I was tracking the Weather Channel's Weatherscan, watching various patches of snow clouds missing us. And now, it's supposed to be sunny and cold. The high isn't supposed to be above freezing for a few days, while the lows are going to dip into the teens. I feel sorry for poor mom, when she goes to work in the morning it's supposed to be 20! Well, after I went to bed at 4am I woke up at 2pm, getting in my daily 10 hrs. of sl

I can't play Castlevania

Well, I woke up this morning to a surprise: There was a package laying on the counter with a note from Mom saying that I had missed a package when I got the mail yesterday. Inside was Piece o' Cake for the 2600. I also went to the game store. I decided to add to my NES on GBA games collection. I got Castlevania. I can only get as far as the bat and then I die. Stupid thing won't charge me unless I charge him and when i do he hurts me. I'd like to meet the "clever" guy who thought to put actual A

First Frank update of 2020

So I decided to attempt to make the screen I last worked on in Frank the Fruit Fly to be faster since Frank moves really slowly in it. I think it came out a lot better. I also went back and thought of that RNG posted in the "Elevator Events" thread to see if it could be used in Ftff. So someone was nice enough to convert the code snippet so it could be used with Pokemon Mini programming. It worked out so well that I changed the snow falling code I had from what I had before (which was a bunch of

Avatar changing time.

As amazing as 7-Up is, I decided to get rid of it and it was time for a change. But to what? Why, watermelons, of course. Why watermelons? About a year ago, I started composing a song about watermelons. I quit on November 19. And then I got sidetracked with another musical project. Mind you, I just do these for something to do, just biding my time, waiting until I die. I got about 30 minutes into the watermelon song called "Watermelon Surprise (part 1)" and quit. New Years Day I started what I h

Stupid score

Stupid score

So my Cranberry game decided to make the score all crappy looking. I tried EVERYTHING. I tried sleep statements everywhere, I tried lowering them and upping them. I tried adding garbage code to make the game bigger in lots of places, but nothing works. It still does the same thing. Why does this always happen to me? I work on something all proud and then bam. Some stupid thing happens and screws everything up. I might as well just stop coding altogether if the stupid computer doesn't want to pla
