Entry #300!

Wow, every time I attempt to write a diary, i just write in it a few days and forget about it. This time, I guess since it's writing about what I really like (video games), this one is lasting. This is my 300th entry, and with almost 7,000 views, too. Best Buy is the greatest store in the history of video game stores, even though it's not a video game store (in the sense that they sell more than just video games.) So, expect a review of TMNT soon, and, since I pledged to do every single game,

Midway Arcade's Greatest Hits: The Atari Collection 1

Asteroids, Battlezone, Centipede, Missile Command, Super Breakout, and Tempest are here to play on your Super NES. One bad thing I can say about this is there's no way to exit the game unless you die. That and it doesn't take very much time to go into demo mode, only like 5 seconds of inactivity. And it doesn't save your high scores. But I guess the good news is they're arcade perfect, so there's that. And the "1" in the title is a bit misleading, as this is the only Atari collection on the SNES

Password screen work

There was always just one thing bothering me about the password screen in Frank the Fruit Fly: I never put in an option to exit it and go back to the title screen. Yesterday I did just that so now you can. Looking at this just now, it could benefit more if I moved Frank a few pixels further down. Then it would be perfect. Which luckily is a very easy thing to do. I also made a version of Frank the Fruit Fly that begins at the beginning rather than where I just left off. I just put it

Push it back...

They pushed the really hot weather to tomorrow and the next two days. It was originally going to be this weekend, but they put it off. Monday and Tuesday's high are supposed to be 101, while Wednesday it's supposed to get up to 102. It rarely reaches 100 here (it did twice last summer), and the last time there was a heat wave like this was in 2006. That's not to say it's not hot right now (it's 92 and the air conditioning is going but i'm still hot.) And I guess I'm back in my Lynx game of the m

4,000 posts!

Well, I did it. I got up to 4,000. Only 1,000 more until it changes from "River Patroller" to "Quadrunner." I figure that'll take a little over a year if I post an average of thrice per day. Well, that's it for today, not a very long blog entry, is it?

Back to Frank

I don't know why or how, but getting rid of the ".orgfill 0x10000" statement made me able to fit in another screen. So I'll be working on Frank the Fruit Fly until I can't any more. It is odd though that I can. But I don't know how much longer it will let me. I've finished level 3 and will get to work on level 4 now. Hard to believe that tomorrow is Thanksgiving. And then Christmas and then... the roaring twenties. Help me. I'm old. But I shouldn't feel all that old because I'm only in my late 3

Power outage

At about 10 last night the power went out. It's not a good thing when a.) You're awake at 10pm and b.) it's below freezing outside. So we called in the power outage with the cell phone and I played my Virtual Boy in the dark for about a half-hour when I grew tired of it, so I decided to go to sleep. Good thing, too, because it was about 2am when the power came back on. I would have had to stay awake for 4 hours! I was wrapped in blankets and not thinking I would fall asleep, fell asleep on the c

GOAT Store is being nice

Well, I ordered a few things from the Goat Store on March 7. Then the show came so they didn't get my package out. Then they reply saying they didn't have one of the games I ordered. So I picked another one. Today I get an e-mail saying that they didn't have that one, either. So, they're being nice to me and letting me pick up to $15 in merch. So I picked Panic Bomber for Virtual Boy and Popeye for the 2600 (I can't believe I don't have it!) So, if all goes well, they'll have both of these and I

More Lynx Fun

I've compiled a list of Lynx games I'm missing. This doesn't include the ultra-rare Telegames ones, nor the homebrew ones. I figure once I get these, I'll be happy with my collection.   +Battle Wheels +Battle Zone 2000 +Gauntlet: the Third Encounter +Pac-Land +Rampage +Super Asteroids/Missile Command +Xenophobe +Zarlor Mercenary   I went ahead and ordered Lemmings, so once it comes I won't have to worry about that any more. It's been a thunderstormy day so I've been afraid to plug my

Donor carts aplenty

They're multiplying! I think this should be enough to hold me for a little bit. AtariAge user masschamber sent me some lovely donor cartridges. Before you panic and think that I am crazy for using a copy of Alien Invasion, let me say that the cart is broken. I tried it and it didn't work at all.   I went to the Wal-Mart. They had a bunch of Halloween stuff. I had most of it already (what happens when you have a jack-o-lantern collection). They had an arcade machine I wanted.

Lord of the Flies

I found this SD card laying on my desk. I wondered what was on it. So I looked at it on my computer. Just some old Game Boy game files. This is what prompted me to begin making a new Game Boy game. It's called "Flies." Remember that Mario Paint game where you swat at flies? That's this. All I have so far is a title screen with some music. I discovered I had a Frank the Fruit Fly demo for Game Boy on my computer, so I'm using that to build on. I think Game Gear games are prettier, don'

The 2600 collecting saga continues...

If you're wondering how come I haven't blogged as much as I usually do, good for you! And I bet you want to know the answer. Well, here it is. Not much has been happening recently to warrant my usual flood of entries. i'm going to my local store tomorrow to see if they still have the 2600 for sale. Last time i was there (about 2 weeks ago), they tried to hook it up for me but were unsuccessful, so it might be broken, i don't know. One of the guys there said he'd get a piece of equipment from Rad

Skiing season

I decided that since I gave up on the flies game, coupled with the fact that I said I might work on a skiing game for the Channel F, I've decided to make a skiing game for the Channel F. This is a different skiing game since all the slaloms will be placed "randomly" so there will be a different slope each time. I will also add obstacles like trees. But that's later. What I have now are three different skier sprites. One for moving left, one for skiing straight down, and one for moving right. I s

MIDI fun

Seeing as how absolutely nobody has made a Ghosts (Nine Inch Nails) MIDI yet, I decided to try my hand on it. So here's a WIP of 1 Ghosts I which you can download here. I still need to work on some note changing and maybe some instrument changing but I think I have the basics down. I think it's not bad for a couple hour's worth of work, what do you think? Also, I've been getting into MIDIs a lot lately, I made one for the title screen for Zoop for Game Boy. I've been downloading some, too. There

Goshzila

I wanted to work on Frank the Fruit Fly but having no ideas for it caused me to skip that today. So I worked on "Giant Reptile Monster." I named him: Goshzila. There's a reason for one L instead of 2, but it's due to the Odyssey 2, so we'll skip it. I added a title screen with Goshzila running in place. I also changed the fire sprite so it is random, much like the colorful shield in Yars Revenge, only it's red, 3 pixels tall and not very wide. But that's okay since Goshzila isn't very

355*

I was bored, so i convinced my mom to play Scrabble with me even though I always win. Well, this time, I think I broke my record for most points. I beat her 355-231. Well, we cheat a little. What do we do? We trade letters sometimes if someone has lousy letters, and sometimes I help her if she's taking too long and can't think of anything. What put me over the top this time was a bingo (+50 points for using all my letters). Building off of THEM, I made YEARNED and THEME. Of course YEARNED was on

Henry the fourth

So there was an urge to plug in my ol' game.com to see if it still worked or not. The cable was a little wonky and it took a few tries, but I got it working. I tried to play the Lost World, but I couldn't figure it out. So I switched to HENrY. This game consists of matching tiles to try to match. It shows you a tile, and then you have to try to guess where the tile (called "clue") is on a board of 16 tiles. It's you vs. the computer (like you have a friend who's interested in playing the game.co

13 or 16 obstacles

So I am doing math now. A page has 255 bytes. Subtract the code for placing bytes and I'm guessing I have about, let's say 200 bytes. For there to be 5 tracks, each track would have to have about 13 obstacles. For there to be 13 obstacles would take up 39 bytes of code the way I've set it up, and 39*5=195. Or if I felt that 13 obstacles wasn't long enough, I could have there just be 4 tracks, each with 16 obstacles. (16*3)*5=192 bytes. Either way, I'll probably have enough room in one page to ha

Virtual Boy!

I bought 3D Tetris for Virtual Boy yesterday. It will be a while until it comes, so I am waiting for it anxiously. Until then, I am busy working on GoSub for the Virtual Boy. It wasn't fun sitting there for three hours trying to make the collision detection work right, but once it did, boy was I happy. And so I added level 25. I am having a hard time trying to decide whether to keep the select screen option in (right now, if you press "Select" at the title screen ("W" in the Reality Boy emulator

Begone, ugly brown!

So I noticed that there was an ugly brown that showed up taking up the entire screen when switching between screens. I looked at the color palette in Emulicious's palette displayer and saw what color it was switching to. To change it to black, I had to change the palette in all the sprites I was using. I always hate using GIMP because it takes like 3 minutes to open it up because it's looking for fonts I don't use. So anyway, once that was done, I successfully got rid of the ugly brown. Now it's

Fun With a TI84+

Well, I got a TI84+. Seeing as how it came with the USB wire and it had more memory than a TI83+. I'm going to program (and download) games for it. My first few attempts were futile, mostly because I didn't know what I was doing, but I finally did something at least a little worthwhile. An original game concept called "Fill 'Er Up" in which you fill up the screen with plus signs, but there's an asterisk that randomly goes around the screen erasing your plus signs. Not only that: if you run into

The Jungle Book (NES)

Well, after searching for this title for like a million years (the other being Wario's Woods), I looked at the Goat Store and lo and behold, they had the Jungle Book. (Still have to search for Wario's Woods, though.) The main reason for wanting this game is because of its elaborate secret cheat system. All you have to do to access it is to go into the sound test and play sounds 40, 30, 20, 19, 18, 17, 16, and 15. I doubt anyone here has this game though (it's kind of rare). From there it goes to

Quest for a walnut

So I got inspired by King Crimson's "Lizard" to make the best MIDI I could possibly make that was my own composition. I began composing this grand symphony. But it didn't have a name. So I decided to name it "a walnut." And for the cover, I decided to put on a picture of a walnut. Rather than stealing one, I decided to buy a walnut and take a picture of it. But I went to the store. I couldn't find a walnut. I mean, how could you not find a walnut at the grocery store? I guess it's not walnut sea

The Big Project: Day 5

Well, day 5 came and went. They got here at about 9 this morning and left at around 6. I don't know why they don't leave earlier (I'd sure like them to). They painted the den and worked some more on my bathroom. My bathroom is still a mess. Then at 4, mom came home. She had bought me the new Dream Theater album (the deluxe, 3-cd version). It was originally $26.99 but was on sale for some reason for only $19.99. My favorite song is "The Count of Tuscany" (19:16), the longest track on it. It has i

I give up again

This time I have decided to give up on Hamburgers En Route to Switzerland 2. There is something in the boss fight that causes death when it doesn't run into anything and makes the game start all over again. So I've decided to save the torture and just give up on it. Just what I need in my life is more torture.
