A Gift of Song

A month or so ago you may have remembered my musical composition I'm making called "My Butt Hurts Part 3". Well, I finished that. In case you've forgotten, all three parts of My Butt Hurts together equal about 47 minutes of music, each clocking in at around 15 minutes. Part 3, which you can download in MIDI form here is 15:56. I was going to give this as a Christmas gift to my sister and dad. Some song parts have been floating around in my head for the past years, while others have been newly co

A game about pain

So I couldn't sleep last night because the pain in my knee was hurting overtime. Doubled with the fact that under my leg hurt as well, but not as much (something that happens when I try for 45 minutes to go to sleep and fail.) So I began to doodle on the Atari 2600 about my knee. I tried to draw a knee. It kept going weird and not working, so I went back to bed and fell asleep after an hour or so of failing programming. I woke up this morning and the pain was still here. Only one more day until

A DS game you've never heard of

I certainly never knew it existed. I forget the exact title of the game, but I saw it at GameStop. I didn't buy it, though. It has something to do with Heathcliff the cartoon cat. Yes, I was astonished as you. Kind of like the Gumby game they made for the GBA. Did they think that they would sell a ton of copies of a game about a cat that isn't Garfield? Maybe I should go back and buy it. Maybe it will become as rare as Intelligent Qube for the PSX or something. Has anyone else seen this game?

A different cranberry

So all this working on games involving cranberries made me think of the one I started on the Odyssey 2. The reason I quit working on it is because it wasn't very exciting. But I had an idea for it: Make a track that has randomly generated obstacles. So I worked. All night I worked. I figured out how to make it so that I can have tracks of different lengths without extra code. I was having trouble using the joystick to select a track number. So I decided to move that to the keyboard. I spent a fe

A diary in comic book form

I've just been looking through over almost 15 years worth of my comic book i make just to amuse myself (right now, i'm working on issue #431). Started at age 12, fifteen years later i am 26 years old and still working on it. Sometimes filled with current events of the day and my views on them, it's sort of a diary in comic book form. Most others are filled with two guys named Bill & George who do stuff, much like in the vein of Ren and Stimpy, or Frank & Ernest. They can go anywhere and

A day late.

Well, finally Comic Genesis got their act together and fixed their stupid little problem. And my comic, dated yesterday (I draw my comics about a month in advance), was just shown TODAY. I have all the Sun. and Wed. ones done until June 17. I could just as well wait until June 16th to do the rest of the month, but knowing me, I'll probably be drawing a couple more tonight. Oh, and if you're up, tonight on the Tonight Show, Jay's doing Headlines (or at least he's supposed to, today being Monday

A dark poem I wrote

This poem I wrote is about my experience in a kind-of-mental-hospital when I was in my early teens, thus beginning my "depression" and "need" to take drugs like Abilify. I was fortunately good enough not to go into the "padded room." I got more than just bread and water. I never have worn a straitjacket, I didn't hear voices in my head, either, but i did slit my wrists. Kind of silly now that I think about it. I mean, if I really wanted to die, I'd just take a whole bottle of tylenol with a jug

a cover.

So I was looking for an inspiration for a cover to the song I just finished. You know, like a CD cover. Mom works downtown and she got me some pictures for an unrelated website, I wanted something green. I don't know, I just like different things in the series I do to have #1 be blue, #2 be green, and #3 be red. Sometimes I may mix things up a little and have a #2 be red and #3 be green. Well, anyway, I was looking through a few pictures, and found a mainly green patch of color among a mainly bl

A couple hours for this? (part 2)

I improved the 7800 program I had. I added some music and changed the font to resemble my own handwriting more. I still don't know what to do with the program though. It most likely will be a title screen, but what will the game be about? It was a little work drawing 62 letters and numbers in Photoshop and "correcting" them but I think I did a good job of it. Am wondering why more games don't use a white title screen like this. If white web sites are the best ones to look at, then why

A couple hours for this?

Making this in 7800 BASIC should not take TWO HOURS. I am going to add fancy title screen music. (Well, as fancy as you can get with TIA.) And then what, I don't know. I started out with a fancy actual pineapple. But color #1 did not want to show up. And then I thought "OK, this is ugly. I'd be better off drawing a pineapple." So I did. Color #1 in the palette still wasn't showing up. So I did a work around. I made color 1 insignificant and used the other colors. And I was also h

A corn-ucopia of vegetables.

Pea-Man went to the corn maze and found the carrots have invaded it. Is nothing sacred?!   I worked some more on Pea-Man. I thought that corn, peas and carrots together on the same screen would be really amusing, so I did it. I also introduced a new thing: The level does not end after you eat the last dot. Instead, a passage opens up on the left edge and Pea-Man must go through it to advance to the next level.   Here's what will happen: At the end of level 5, the carrots will

A confession

I have a confession to make. As you all know, I've been working on a Tetris clone for the 2600. Well, I'm sick of Tetris. I'll keep programming it, but I'm going to reduce my playtesting of the game drastically because I finally got sick of the game on any platform. I guess thinking about Tetris day and night wears on you until you get so sick of it you could scream.

A comic from the future

It's always fascinated me that we have this B.C. comic strip about cave dwellers, but we have no opposite. Well, about a year ago, I rectified this situation and made the first comic strips of "A Future Comic": I put a few weeks' worth of them on my comics webpage and then moved on to something else. Well, the urge to do some comic strips hit me again (my website had been updating every week), so I decided to do a few more "A Future Comic" strips. In case any reader was actually readi

a comic book experiement

For the past month or so whenever I have the desire to or an idea hits me, I draw it out and then scan the page. Usually I just staple them together and then leave it, but this time I wanted to try something different: Print out issues of my comic books "on demand." Likely, demand will be none, but it's still an experiment nonetheless. For the past 22 years I have been making issues of a comic book called "Bill and George," (issue #538 was finished earlier this month.) But it's not this one I'm

A Clockwork Orange

So I got an Annoying Orange DVD. Volume 1. I sat and watched the whole thing. Almost two hours worth. And I liked it. Please help me. I haven't watched it before except for a very brief time when my niece had it on YouTube. But I got it in hopes that I would like it. Now I am anxiously awaiting volume 2. I don't really want to get the complete first season DVDs this May, since this DVD was only $10. It runs a dollar per episode. Pretty nice deal. And Go Ducks! They beat #5 Oklahoma State in the

A Clean Start with CLEAN_START

I thought I had everything perfect. I hadn't been using the CLEAN_START macro and everything was working fine, up until today. I was so angry because the stupid game wasn't displaying anything on real hardware yet working perfectly fine on Stella. How? WHY?! I tried a whole bunch of things. None of them worked. I was looking through, comparing my code with Collector. I decided to go at the start and work my way down. I saw CLEAN_START. I looked at my code. It had no CLEAN_START. So I erased the

A Channel F Thanksgiving?

I was thinking about the phrase "you lose turkey" in Tic-Tac-Toe for the Channel F. I tie it to Thanksgiving, since it's Turkey Day. So if you're playing it on Thanksgiving and you lose to the computer, it takes away part of your turkey. And then I thought, what goes good with turkey? Cranberry sauce. Which is where Quest of the Cranberry comes in. I doubt I'll be able to complete QotC by Thanksgiving, so it will have to be a Thanksgiving tradition to play these two games if I ever finish progra

A Bucket of Blood

Stupid movies are fun. They're even more fun with MST3K. But they're fun even without the Satellite of Love. Some time ago, I got a 12 double-sided DVD pack of horror movies (50 in all.) After watching about 20 minutes worth of "A Bucket of Blood" a few times, last night I decided to watch the whole thing. And I did. The movie is about a naive guy who wants to be a beatnik-type artist. So, when he accidentally stabs his landlady's cat who got stuck in the wall, he decided to cover it with clay a

A Bird & A Sign: The Game

For a few years, I have been making a webcomic about a bird and a sign. So, I've decided to make a video game based on the comic book. And while I could just easily do this on the 2600 in bB with the player1colors minikernel, I decided I shouldn't forget how to code for the Virtual Boy, so this is my latest Virtual Boy project, since GoSub 3D is done. And here I thought there would only be two or three games in the Planet Virtual Boy 2010 coding competition, everyone waited until the last day to

A Big Difference

Worked on the 2600tris line clearing code today. I got an idea of how to speed it up to look like Chetiry's line-clearing time. It doesn't work as fast as I had hoped, but the time is considerably less than it was before when it comes to making the lines of blocks go down once a line is cleared. It took at least a few hours to do. And the game has a whole heck of a lot of code to manage, at almost 2,000 lines of bB code. (1,944 to be exact.) 19,623 lines of ASM code, which, according to that top

A better game.

So I had a chance to stay up late. I was bored. So I decided to work on Ten Pest some more. I made the alien shoot at you. And he follows you. Shooting at the UFO's missile makes it but not the UFO disappear. Do you get a (brief) chance to shoot the UFO while it's not shooting? Take a shot! The highest score I could get on this version was 2,000. But there's no variety yet. But now I don't know whether I should make some aliens not shoot at you or follow you because that might make the game too

A better bird

So I've been tinkering with the bird design a little bit. It now looks like this: I have been having tons of problem with the screen and the collision detection. If it detects the bird collision and the egg collision at the same time, the game crashes. So it's been a big fight trying to make it so when the bird's y collision area ends, the egg's y collision begins. Which is especially difficult when you have no idea what you're doing.   I finally fell asleep at about 4a.m. a

A better bear

I changed the bear. Drawing a bear is hard. I was on Discord last night, and based on suggestions from multiple people, I kept changing the bear until someone said it looked a lot better. Then everyone disappeared. They probably went to bed. So I went to bed. Took a gummy melatonin. It took about 20 minutes for me to sleep. It was after midnight the last time I looked at the clock.   Woke up ten hours later. I still felt sleepy so I went back to sleep on the couch. Got up at

A 47 Odyssey

I thought since I haven't done this for a while that I should start writing more about my experiences with the number 47. On channel 47, which is The Weather Channel here, they have a show called "23.5 Degrees." I don't know the significance of the number 23.5, but if you double it, you get the number 47. And of course, 47 popped up in my recent Odyssey pickup. One of the cards in Football has the number 47 on it. I scanned it. The back of the card says "PUNT" on it. But unfortunately, I just h

A 3D game for a 3D gaming system?

Makes sense to me. But, it isn't easy. What I want to do is have the sub in GoSub 2 for Virtual Boy move in 3D, foreground and background, like in Virtual Boy Wario Land. But something is going wrong with the collision detection of the walls and when the sub is in the background, it keeps hitting the foreground wall. There are a few people on the Planet Virtual Boy that are helping me program this game, and I must wait until they log on to the site for help. I don't want to screw up the game's c
