Testing the battery.

So I was reading the Nester's Funky Bowling manual trying to come up with something to add to the Burgers game. I'm going to add the Virtual Boy testing screens when I'm finished, but something in the meantime. I came across the part where it talks about an icon coming up when the battery is low. Seemed easy enough, but it turned into a huge production. But I think I have it done now thanks to the Discord people. Unfortunately, there is no function in Mednafen to simulate a low battery, so I had

Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland 2 - level 3

Work on level 3 has begun. As you can see, I finally managed to guess the correct combination to display black numbers. I need to apply this to the title screen as well. At first it displayed black, but then changed to blue for some mysterious reason. I had a horrible time trying to figure out why the onion rings weren't showing up. The answer: I never told them to. They would have if I started the game on level 2 and then beat it and went to level 3. Since I started the game on level

DS Games

Well, after a long time searching for it used I finally found Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble for my collection. I also got Chameleon, which I've never seen anywhere before. So hopefully these are kind of rare and will make good additions to my DS collection, which is now up to 139. And there's also a chance of snow this weekend, so I need to stay up all night to see it. I love snow, it's so beautiful.

Do I Love Lucy?

Went to Best Buy and saw the first season of I Love Lucy for $25. This inspired me to start collecting '50s TV shows on DVD. I also saw The Honeymooners, but it didn't have a price on it so I didn't get it. But the Lucy thing IMO is a deal because when was the last time you saw 7 DVDs for $25? And especially of a TV show as popular as I Love Lucy? Well, I'll watch some tonight, especially of the unaired pilot episode. Fortunately, this had the Vitameatavegamin episode on there "Are you unpoopula

Push the button, Frank!

Someone made a cockroach sprite for me. And with a little tweaking to the building's interior, I made screen 43 passable. Not only did my tweaking of the building make the screen possible to exit, it also lessened the code a whole bunch. Frank is supposed to hit the button at the bottom avoiding the cockroaches that move up and down and then the blocks at the right side will disappear and Frank can exit. But this only took 2 hours because I was having trouble with the walls. But I got it fixed a

Zyx update

So after I don't know how long, I finally got the black patches in Greedy Zyx gone. So it now looks like this: Which is a lot better than what it looked like before. I got it down to 15 separate colors, but the key was this: When using GIMP, don't write the color space information. So I am really happy with the game now, as it's 1.58MB instead of what it used to be (1.66MB), so there's more space to put in the AtariAge intro in case it gets published like I would like it to

Screwed up "schedule"

These past few days I have been getting up at 10pm and taking a nap at 4am. Which is fine, except for today I didn't wake up from my nap until 11am. Which probably means I'll be asleep soon. Something is making me really sleepy. Before I am off to slumberland, I just thought I'd share with you what I've been working on these past few hours. I got an idea for a Frank the Fruit Fly screen. The bees move diagonally between their tree and the center one. You can pass through the center tr

Squaresville.

I like designing fonts. A long time ago I had a font program that let me import pictures into glyphs. Well, a few years ago, I remembered that old program and decided to hunt for a similar one. Lo and behold, I had to pay to make my fonts be actual fonts. So I did. It was around $30 or something. And after making a few test fonts, it sat on this computer unused. Until tonight. I made a font. It's called Squaresville. You'll see why if you download it. I have attached it here just in case you wan

Orange Ocean

How did this orange end up in the ocean? I don't know but it's there. I added the white dots to signify (maybe) that it's an orange instead of, say, a grape or something. When I put grapes in the game, it will be a bunch of them. I enjoy working on this project. I don't know how or why, but it's the easiest assembly I've ever worked with. But sometimes the first letter of the password doesn't show up when I force it to begin to level 4. I'm hoping this is not a thing to worry about si

Argh!

I started to go online to schedule an appointment to get my ID card renewed. I get to the part where I actually begin to schedule an appointment, but I can't because there aren't any available openings in both of my local DMV locations! This is stupid. I think they need to open up a few more locations to better serve the area, but that will never happen because that would mean paying more government workers. And there's no money to pay them with NOW any way. BUT I NEED MY ID CARD because it expi

Password screen work 2

I knew I had some sort of code somewhere that told the computer what to do if a number was higher than 9 in hexadecimal. I found it in my snake game. I tweaked it a little and applied it to the Quest of the Cranberry game. Now the game doesn't accept the code if the health % number is invalid. Just to make sure, I put in a number which was invalid ($7A) and it worked. It rejected the passcode. But I spied something I forgot to do the last time: I forgot to reset the passcode to 0 if it was inval

HERTS2 resurrected

So after a whole bunch of hours spent working on my game I gave up on, I think I have it in a playable state where it won't crash on you. It does, however, still show the number 4 and a little bit of garbage, but that's out of the range of the Game Gear screen (so that's mainly why I make Game Gear games instead of SMS games, I don't know why garbage tiles come up!) The problem was collision detection outside the Game Gear's visible screen.   I have made a boss. You must shoot the boss

Goings on for August 7, 2019

At about midnight, I gave up trying to go to sleep and began wanting to work on a MIDI of a long song. But the one I wanted to work on, I couldn't find the CD it was on, but it was okay because a search on Google revealed someone already did it. I also found lots of Dream Theater MIDIs someone made, making mine I did a few years ago unnecessary. I found "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence," but it was broken up into 8 parts. So I wanted to "glue" them together. After downloading and trying to use a

4,000 blog entries!

I guess that's what happens when you blog continuously since 2006. Actually, this is blog entry #4,003. I was waiting for #4,000, but it snuck by me. Hm. Auto spell is underlining the word "snuck". It's in the Scrabble dictionary, though.   Anyway, I went to bed at 3 a.m. and slept all day. I woke up at 4 p.m. I intended to not do that, but I was so sleeeeepy, so I had to go back to sleep because I couldn't force myself out of bed. So after I forced myself up at 4 p.m., I went to work

Burger trouble

So last night I tried my game on a real Game Gear. It had some weird graphical glitches when you died. I was able to fix that by turning the screen off. Then, all of a sudden, I had a bunch of weird problems pop up. I had discovered why I quit working on it. Stuff just wasn't working right. I started work at about 10:30pm last night. Into the night I worked on the game. Sometimes I thought I had fixed something when it happened again. I tried tons of different code patterns trying to fix a myria

Argh.

So I forgot about the overlapping sprite situation the Channel F has when sprites overlap. So after adding the flyswatter and having the fly blink a bit, I've decided to give up on the fly swatting game. One thing I haven't given up on though is my long song thing. This is the cover for the album. I think I have a pretty good chance of finishing another 27 minutes of music by April 30. I have 10 already done. This is the picture of the walnut I took. 2k Contest

Remember those coding competitions for the 2600 (or any other console you wished) where the main goal was to have a complete game in a very small amount of space? Like 1k or 2k or 4k or something (I don't remember what the sizes were.) The games one year were all featured on one cartridge (The 2005 Minigame Multicart). Looking back now, it looks like the contest was called the "[year] minigame contest".   Well, I want to have a similar thing. So I want all of you to get some ideas for

Game Gear musings

I have been looking on eBay for Game Gear related stuff I don't have. It's either something I have or some stupid rancid shovelware. It's kind of hard to find anything new and interesting when you have 146 Game Gear games. That is precisely the reason I wanted to develop Game Gear games. And it's the reason why I began work on Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland 2 (and the first one as well.)   I think the Game Gear is better than the Game Boy because it has color. Not that I think Game

Weekly doodles #3

So apparently, the comics I do don't get much attention. Last week only had 11 views. So let's take a look at this week's. Originally I was going to have the pun involve Bert, but the word is "sherbet", not "sherbert." I looked it up just to make sure. I don't know why the cops are investigating this very bizarre case involving sherbet, but there they are. This comic does have 16 different colors even though it might not look like it.   I am back working on GoSub for the Ata

Attack of the Wuzzles!

I was looking through the special section of last Sunday's paper. Our local newspaper is owned by USA Today for some reason. Sometimes we get these special sections filled with puzzles. I came across these things called "wuzzles." I googled it and sure enough, it is a thing. I think it's a portmanteau for "word puzzles." I mean, how else could you get the name wuzzle? Anyway, a loooong time ago (like when I was a kid), I remember starting this book of some, but I didn't know what they were calle

Cherries Redux

I decided to work on my craig the cranberry game for the Virtual Boy, this after I started a new project (like I didn't have enough already.) But I don't know whether I should continue my Tempest-like shooter or not because of this. These games have been worked on within the last month or so: MidSpace (Atari 2600) - although this one's done HERTS2 (Game Gear) Quest of the Cranberry (channel F) Craig the Cranberry (Virtual Boy) Tempest-like shooter (INTV)

Hamburgers level 1 completed.

So last night I went to work adding in the boss part of the stage. I went back and fixed a bug that happened when you just start out I must have introduced somehow. So now with that fix, I have the "engine" mostly completed. I'll add little bits of code as the game progresses to make stuff harder, like the milkshake's ability to shoot out onion rings. The int main_game (working in C here) has about 250 lines. I tried to compress it, but I'll try to more later. For now I need to te

Annoying feature.

Remember when you put in the Virtual Boy game, it gives you a screen to adjust the thing? I put that in. Remember the pause feature you most likely turned off where it paused play after 15 minutes? I put that in too. Just finished testing that, and after about 15 minutes, a message came on saying "take a break." To resume play when you get the message, press Start. It's that easy. And, you can turn it off too. This was hard to do, but now I can continue working on the main

Swirly gig

I am a lover of crosswords, especially weird-looking ones. So I was delighted to see one in the paper on my birthday last Saturday. It was shaped like a swiss roll (in other words, swirled.) After a few minutes, I thought "this is hard, even for a Saturday!" But I persisted. Gave up, and went back to it later. I think I have done it. Although I don't see how "legislators" are ones on a diet. I thought it was a really cool crossword idea, so I thought I'd take a stab at making one in the same gri

Return to Zyx

I was trying to find something yesterday. Ran into my Jaguar games. Went to sleep and woke up the next morning at about 5 a.m. I was working on a Jaguar game. I decided to see if I could make it any better. I fixed the jumping gravity problem I discovered in the Running Zyx game. And, I also made the title screen look much better. Unfortunately, due to the way Running Zyx works, I am unable to fix it up with an actual mountain, highway, and field (plus, it will take a lot of effort to put a pict
