Remembering middle school

down in the depths of my brain lie horrible thoughts about middle school. but the summer before I started it, I made a newsletter and sent it to my friends. It was called Big Belch News. You may remember me talking about reviving it a few years ago, which ran for a few years. But this summer, I stopped making them. So looking through papers, I found CHEEZi, made by some kid I went to school with. I thought to myself "it looks neat! I wonder what I can do with the CHEEZi name." Since he never mad

Game Boy programming is hard.

I guess Frank wasn't meant to be. I tried all of last night trying to make a lower border, and it kept on giving me weird results I didn't want. So I'm declaring this project dead. But I would like to do SOMETHING for the Game Boy. Like perhaps an arcade version of something that hasn't been done before using only one screen. Most everything you can imagine has been done on Game Boy, but one major game eluded the Game Boy. That is Tempest. And if it can be reasonably done on the Atari 2600, then

Turning gray

About a month ago, I tried to make a gray shade in Frank the Fruit Fly and failed miserably. It worked, but Frank kept acting weird. I decided to come back to it today. I think I found out the reason why. I was using the a variable to move Frank around AND to switch between the two screens that made the gray shade possible. So I tried changing the a to b and lo and behold, Frank quit acting weird. mov b, [graytimer] inc b mov [graytimer], b

Jaguar

So I hooked up my Jaguar and turned it on with the Jeff Minter game in. Red screen. I tried a few more times. Red screen.I unhooked the Jaguar and put it in through the VCR. Red screen. I tried another game, Pinball Fantasies. Red screen. I actually got Evolution: Dino Dudes to work, so I put Pinball Fantasies in again. Red screen. I tried blowing on the cart. A few more times and I got Pinball Fantasies to work. And eventually the Jeff Minter game works now too. I hadn't turned the Jaguar on

Old 7-up Can

So I got an old 7-up can off eBay. It's kind of dirty, and was wondering if there was any way to clean it. Don't worry, I didn't pay a lot for it. The shipping was more than the can. I'm still waiting for my other package to arrive: Princess Rescue for the 2600! There will be a new issue of the 2600 Scene coming up here soon, the June 2013 issue. The cover story will be Princess Rescue.

Piece Peace - new handheld game

OK, so I bought this little handheld dealy with overlays. My mind works in overdrive. What if I were to make a new overlay, with story, essentially making a new game? Well, I thought about it. The games on it are Basketball, Ice Hockey and Soccer. The handheld hasn't come yet, but I assume it's from the '80s. So I thought about it without even seeing how the game works yet. What can I make a game out of that is similar to those three sports? Granted, everything I will make for this handheld will

Nine of Diamonds

Flipping through a huge book of crossword puzzles and a few other different kinds of puzzles I bought last year, I came upon one called "Nine of Diamonds." I didn't get very far, but I thought to myself after looking at the answers that maybe I could make some puzzles like this. This first one was the product of a half-hour or so. I made the unique grid in Paint and made a separate grid without numbers to fill in via computer. I use Word to make puzzles. If it's a crossword, I just use a table (

Carmageddon 64

So I went to the game store. I saw Carmageddon 64 loose for $15. I would have bought it except for the fact that I already have it. If anyone wants it, I can go back next weekend and if it's still there, buy it for you and mail it. It's a pretty rare game. I think I bought mine on the Internet. This is the first time I have seen it in the "semi" wild. I wanted to go to another store as well, but I forgot why, so I just went home and cooked up some French fries. When I got home I remembered why I

Celery's nose

I went to the flea market and left empty-handed. I should be out enjoying the 60 degree weather, but I decided to stay inside and work on the Celery Show some more. I changed the shape of the celery and gave him an actual nose instead of it looking like he got a chunk bitten out of him. I added a scene where there's a bunch of rabbits and the lead rabbit (not the big one) hops by the celery, and goes into the rabbit capitol building and speaks. Since this is the 2600 and not some fancy console,

A little more...

So I worked on Stickman last night again. I found a way to stop sounds. Setting $0aah to 0 makes it silent. So I put in the stepping sounds and whenever the animation timer reached a certain point, I made the stepping sound stop. Of course, this means that when you enter another page and immediately begin walking right, you won't hear the noise that said you completed a page. I doubt many people will do that, though, they'll probably look to see if there's an eraser right in front of them, which

Eating Game Boy

Since I decided to give up on the Mr. Stick game, and that my batch of games from the first game I ordered came, I wanted to work on a follow-up game. So what I decided to do last night was work on my Game Gear game I was making and turn it into a Game Boy game. Work on this has begun. I spent a lot of time working to make the guy there have enough tiles to be displaying as well as have room for the alphabet and other stuff. The mouth is a sprite. I'm making it so pressing A opens the mouth and

Toobin' revisited

I'm trying to port Toobin' over to the 2600 using bB. It's not going very good, especially the title screen. I even have an alternate name for this project: 2600bin'. Well, anyway, it starts out with an AtariAge splash screen (which every game apparently does nowadays), then the title screen. Where to start? The music sounds awful and the O's keep disappearing and reappearing on the screen (I want them to bounce around and when they hit the side of the screen, bounce off into the opposite direct

Back to DS collecting

Here's a tip for the DS collectors (like Spendtoomuchonatari): Do not go to Wal-Mart. All they have is kids' crap like High School Musical, Wall-E, and other things for the tween crowd. I went there and managed to find, though, Phoenix Wright 3 (on my want list) and M&Ms Kart Racing (which I had to settle for.) I've decided to limit to spending $20 each on DS games (if only the US Mint made $30 bills...) With all the chaos of moving, I've forgot all my other collections (like my long songs o

Update on my life & Jack

Well, Wednesday has come and gone. We had a little bit of snow all three days (Thu, Fri and Sat.) Right now, I'd say there's still about an inch of snow out there (it just won't go away!) I've also been working on Jack & the Beanstalk quite a lot. I'm two-thirds of the way finished with level 2. I don't want to post an update right now (because I just did about two hours ago, but I spiced up the title screen a little bit. I put Jack running back and forth side to side. When the title screen

My music

I've included a piece i played on my keyboard. The song is from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins for Game Boy. I'm going to do a whole album of songs from video games (if I can think of that many I can play.) Right now, it's in WAV format. I can make this as an MP3, but then the file size would be 5x what it is now. I don't know why MP3 caught on as *the* format for music listening when WAV files are much smaller and easier to handle. Oh well, anyway, about two-thirds into it, I make a mistake

Fun with crosswords

I have found a wonderful crossword puzzle magazine. Too bad it only comes out 6 times a year. Dell's "Puzzler's Crosswords Crosswords" is its name, and the latest issue just came out yesterday. I discovered it by chance one time when i was shopping with my mom at WinCo (a local grocery store) about a month ago. It usually has a few very interesting-looking puzzles by a guy named Raymond Young. It's interesting that it tells who made each puzzle, something that most other crossword magazines don'

A Hard Day's Shopping

Well, I just got back from shopping at places. No, not the usual crowded stores, but other interesting local stores that weren't crowded. At the record store I got another Renaissance album (I really need to get speakers for my record player!) and a Frank Zappa CD with a long song on it. I got Burnt Weeny Sandwich with a song I just finished listening to called The Little House I Used To Live In. It's about 17 minutes long but with the applause and extra thing added to it, its length turns out t

Argh.com!

So I buy two games from this seller on eBay. Turns out one of them is the wrong game! (To his defense, though, I did buy the wrong game from him recently.) But still, that's no excuse. So I contacted the seller, and since people are usually asleep at 10pm, I'm probably going to have to wait until morning to see what to do. Shoot, and I was just about to say it was very fast shipping, too. I'm probably going to have to mail the wrong game back, but since he mailed them in bubbleope and they turne

GBA Chronogaming blog future update

Hey guys (and gals), just wanted to tell you that the GBA Chronogaming blog section will be coming back sometime next week. I have bought the following games, which will be the next three (in order of release): Klonoa: Empire of Dreams Tetris Worlds Dexter's Laboratory: Deesaster Strikes!   Which will end page 2 of the Nintendo Game Boy Advance release date list on Nintendo.com, what I use for release date info. I already had Tetris Worlds, so I didn't need to buy that one, which is nice. S

Garage sale preview

Hey all, I'll be selling some stuff at my sister's garage sale tomorrow morning, including a PS1 with games, an Odyssey 2 with games, a whole bunch of NES games, some Genesis games, a semi-working NES with no screws or cords (asking $1 for it!) some Game Boy stuff, an N64 with a game, Intellivision games, and a few other goodies in an "everything in this box is 50 cents" box. So if you're interested, and in the Salem, Oregon area, come on down. It's near the Lancaster Mall, in that neighborhood.

Odyssey games

You all remember DodgeBall, right? (I still have a few more unsold copies of it if anyone wants one.) For my next game, I would like to use tubes instead of envelopes. From what I understand, Rev. Rob used tubes for OdBall (correct me if I'm wrong). I'd like to have my next game completed and shipped by January 26, 2012. I have about 3 months left to work on this if I want to make my due date. And then release my "40th anniversary Odyssey game" in August. So 2012 will be big for me as far as the

I need the extra cycles

So I experimented with adding a clock to the Celery movie. As it turns out, once I removed some stubborn bugs, that I need the extra cycles to display the panning to the left of scene 8 without the screen jumping around. I had programmed this for about an hour, and it was all for nothing. Oh well. I did learn something I had forgotten. Eating Peanut M&Ms makes my throat feel scratchy and feel like there's something stuck inside it. And what's more odd is that peanuts not covered in chocolate

Time for a review again. Donkey Kong Land

The always off-center Rare, after seeing the success of Donkey Kong Country on the Super Nintendo, brought their fancy computer-generated graphics to the Game Boy. The result: drastic changes to Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong, including no more of both of them being on the screen at the same time, and, of course, now they're only 4 colors instead of a whole bunch of them. But the nice gameplay is still there. It's actually not a bad game at all. DKC on the go. It's different levels, too, which is ki

Ghost Rider

After an almost two-month-hiatus, I walk into Best Buy sensing nothing but coming out with Trioncube and Ghost Rider for GBA. So, the GBA 2007 blog is back! This game is rated T for Teen.   Ghost Rider is a guy who has a skeleton head that’s on fire. As if that wasn’t scary enough, he’s trapped in Hell. This basically takes on the form of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2, (the Arcade game), with a little Roadblaster thrown in, with a level of Ghost Rider on his bike killing baddies that way.

At least it's not 103...

The high is ten degrees cooler today, a refreshing 93 I feel sorry for the Volcanoes, who have to play baseball tonight in the hot weather. I've always wondered why major/minor league baseball hold their games in the hottest part of the year. Who wants to play baseball when it's so hot outside? And I feel really sorry for the Arizona Diamondbacks and all their opponents who have to play there. Ugh. Why not hold games in the spring? Starting in March and ending in June or something? Why not just
