500!

I just got 7 games in the mail today (6 Lynx, and Strat-O-Gems Deluxe), for a total of 504 video games, which puts me over the 500 mark! 10 total for the Lynx, and 149 for the Atari 2600. I love Strat-O-Gems Deluxe, by the way. I didn't get an AtariVox, though, so I'm probably missing something. I've yet to read the instruction booklet though I already know how to play it. It's a tight fit for my 2600, so it must have been a red label in the cart's previous "life." See, I've been here for almos

50% finished

Well, I spent most of Easter asleep, which is okay because I wasn't doing anything special for it. I woke up at 3pm. After being awake for a few hours, I decided to take a nap. This was around 5pm. I woke up and it was about 11pm. Yikes. I figured I might as well work on Nightmare Nemesis again. I was thinking about it after a couple people wanted a copy of Bubba's Buck Blastin'. After fighting with my computer over recording my window I had open, I finally got that issue resolved. I did, howeve

50-Foot-Tall Stalks of Celery

So, anyway, I got this Dream Theater 2-CD set, hoping to find a 42-minute-long track. Once I got it in the CD player, I was enraged because they broke it up into 8 different tracks, even though the liner notes and the back of the CD clearly said "6. Six Degrees of Turbulence - 42:04". False advertising? Probably. So, now I'm beginning to call all my long songs even longer. For example, I've been putting Thick As a Brick in my lists as two seperate tracks of 20 minutes+ each. Now, it's listed in

4k quickly

I have 2 screens in, a title screen, and now I only have 800 bytes left of a 2k game. For the scope of what I want to do, I think I'll need at least 16k of space. I was looking at the Lord of the Rings prototype and it was only 8k. Adventure is 4k. How did they pull that off?   So anyway, I made this title screen. Press fire and Craig will show up. Move to the right and I added in two trees. This was especially hard since I wanted to keep Craig in so he could interact with t

4k games on the Odyssey 2

I spent a few hours on "lowercase i" last night. I ended up ditching the changes I made since it made the game look worse than last time. There were a couple changes I decided to keep though. One is fine-tuning the collision detection between the dot and the boat. Before, if the dot touched the water and not the boat, the boat would still attach itself to the dot. This has been changed. Second, I made the i weaker, since the fight with the big H doesn't knock health points off as much as I wante

4k

I think I figured out how to make 4k games on my own. I went to the VES wiki and took a look at some of the disassemblies of commercially released games. I noticed something. A 2k game did not go above the address A0fff, while the bigger ones did. I went back and inspected my own code. I noticed the signature: org $ff0signature: .byte ".chris read 2018" I thought the ff0 was A0ff0. So I thought to myself, "Well, what if I changed that org statement?" So a few attempts later, I got a

49 crosswords

For a long time now, I've been checking the newspaper each Friday or Saturday to see if a New York Times crossword puzzle has the highest clue number as 49 (or less). As a result, I have a small collection of them, and it's been quite a few years. Well, there's been a drought recently of these 49ers (as I call them), so I've decided to make some of my own. I am still an amateur when it comes to crossword puzzle making (especially ones really hard to make.) I've tried (and failed) lots of times t

4747

Hey gang, saw 47 a couple of times. One time I was flipping through the channels and saw a show about a baby who weighed 47 pounds. I also just happened to look at the horoscope (something I never do), and it said for those born today, one of their lucky numbers is 47. It needs to drop one more degree so it can be 47 degrees outside here.

47 sightings: September 20, 2017

I was watching TV when I noticed the pace of home runs in MLB has increased 47%. Also, I watched a tiny bit of the second episode of the 47th season of Sesame Street. I think Elmo killed the show a long time ago. And at a trip to the grocery store, I saw a bag of popcorn that proudly proclaimed it had 47 calories per cup. The number 47 has eluded me for a long time, but now it has come back these last few days. I was working on my Oranges game for the Game Gear. I noticed when I started work yes

47 sightings: November 22, 2017

The number 47 has eluded me for the longest time, but now it suddenly comes back in a big way. I saw an ad for a local department store selling turkey for 47 cents a pound. Or the basketball game a few nights ago when that guy scored 47 points in a game. And I opened up the paper and read today's "Pearls Before Swine" comic about the scout leader who took 50 kids for a hike and returned with 47. About a week ago, there were 47 days left of the year. (November 15). I used my cell phone

47 sightings: August 5, 2017

47 has been bombarding me lately. A few days ago was our 47th consecutive day without rain. A few days later, a 47 year old man who is going to serve 32 years in prison got an extra 30 years tacked on for another crime. Looks like he'll die in prison. When I thought it was all over, I opened the paper today and saw this: So it's been a hot week. Last night I worked on Frank the Fruit Fly. I worked a lot on the inside of the cat's mouth. Here's what it looks like: Yes, I know the esophagus is q

47 sightings, may 24, 2017

So I was watching TV. About a month ago or so, in an ad for a weight loss thing someone lost 47 pounds. But the big announcement came from another ad. There's going to be a movie out called "47 Meters Down." It's about a couple of girls who go underwater in a cage with sharks when all of a sudden, the rope breaks and they are plunged 47 meters down. I don't know why they chose meters instead of feet. Perhaps it's because they wanted the number 47 in there somewhere. Oh, and I finally got that Od

47 sightings, March 8, 2017

It has been a while since I updated my 47 sightings, but that does not mean I haven't seen the number 47. Most of the 47 sightings were on TV. Like for example, this car dealership in the Portland area having 47 people available to fix your car. There was a piece of jewelry on JTV (like QVC, but all they do is jewelry) that was $47.99. And then there's the Wal-Mart Academy ad. At the end, there's this guy who graduated from it walking past the camera at a Wal-Mart with something priced $9.47 in

47 sightings this weekend

- a guy in a Bowflex Max ad, Phil, was age 47. - the Seattle Seahawks beat the Carolina Panthers 40-7. The total number of points scored between the two teams: 47. - the temperatures got to 47 degrees a lot around here lately. Things are going to be colder, right now it's 37. They're threatening snow around here tonight. It's almost 1am and no sign of snow here yet. I finally bought Wildsnake for the Game Boy, a game I wanted to get. I also bought the Game Boy version of Earthworm Jim from the s

47 sightings #4

The number 47 has been everywhere the last few days. From the local gas prices rising 47 cents to Ron Paul having 47 delegates in the Republican race. I wonder why this is. Apparently the news channel I have has the same affixation I do! I even saw some local report about gas prices being $3.47 or something (I really wasn't paying too close attention) And a few blog entries ago where I had seen the weather having a high of 47 four times in a week's span, guess what channel the Weather Channel is

47 sightings - May 31, 2019

It's been a looong time since I last saw my favorite number in media. Well, today it happened twice. The National Spelling Bee had 8 winners. The 8-way-tie happened because they successfully spelled the 47 tie-breaking words. And a crash just happened locally right near me on the news near highway 47. I try to put the number 47 in my game code whenever I can. Sometimes it fits just right, other times it's not too far off from what I want. In other news, I've been working hard on GoSub 7800 s

47 sightings - February 27, 2020

There has been a national ad recently for a lawyers' office where you text something to the number "47 47 47." The 47 car started in the first position in the Daytona 500. I turned on the weather channel just now (channel 47) and it was 47 degrees at 10:47am. So lots of 47s for me to take in. The Golden State Warriors might lose their 47th game of the season tonight.

47 sightings - 11/15/12

OK, since yesterday marked 47 more days to go until the end of the year, I've decided to have a 47 sighting blog entry. Well, about a week ago, my hometown paper reported that there have been 47 people dying so far in the state of Oregon due to traffic fatalities this year. Making the rounds on Google News, we find that smartphone sales as well as Petco's sales are up 47%. A new Ford Fusion hybrid car gets 47 miles per gallon. And in college basketball (which apparently has started already!) Duq

47 sightings

The presidential campaign is heating up. There was a poll I saw that had Mitt Romney having 47% of the votes, more than Obama who had 45%. That's the only 47 I've noticed lately. There seems to be a lack of 47s around. Got a loose Wipeout 64 at a store for only $5. This from the store that overprices stuff. Found an N64, plugged it in and works good. I even got a 1st place finish on my first race. Pretty incredible that there's 14 other racers. And I'll be getting a prototype Capt. Bruce box in

47 sighting #3

Hi, I was at the post office and was waiting in line and some employee had some boxes and was helping some guy and he told the guy that, I wasn't listening too closely, the postage for the boxes he tried to mail was off by 47 cents. It is amazing how many times one can hear or see the number 47 if you just look or listen for it. Anyway, I mailed two things, and will mail the other two Monday. I recorded two more songs for my "album", one last night and one a half-hour ago. I would like to see yo

47 sighting #2

Hey gang, the high temperature here (in Fahrenheit) gets to be 47 around this time of year, but in the next week, at least according to the Weather Channel, this won't happen once, not twice, not thrice, but FOUR, count 'em FOUR times! After tonight's brief snow flurries of course. I posted a picture of this (rare?) occurrence of four 47 high temps four-casted (pun intended) this next week. I thought it was pretty cool. Especially Friday when I have to go to the doctor. Hopefully 47 will be my l

47 sighting #1 (along with explanation)

I once belonged to the 47 Society http://www.47.net/47society/ which thinks 47 is the quintessential random number. Since I decided to opt out of the mailing list, the number 47 is still my favorite number, and am pleased whenever I find the number on the news, in public, or any other place. So I am proud to start a new category in my blog called "47 sightings." Here's the first entry. It has to do with the TSA scanners at airports: "'Specifically, to reach annual radiation dose limits, a passe

47 sighting - June 8, 2019

A high school senior prank may cost some local seniors $47. Why the teacher chose that amount is unknown, but what the students basically did was move the desks in the high school out into the hall and put hot dogs on the chalkboard chalk holders. And they might not be able to walk in the graduation. Seems kind of a stiff penalty for that, but hey, it's a 47 sighting. A day after I choked, I just now managed to eat a 12 inch Subway sandwich without choking. They never put enough mayo on, so I

47 movie

Not very many 47 sightings recently. There is a big one though. There's a movie called "Hitman: Agent 47". I was surprised reading through the movies part of the paper. If they shaved a minute off of the film, it would have been 1 hour and 47 minutes long. I am also surprised "Jurassic World" is still in theaters. Also, some guy in the Life section got interviewed about a beer book he wrote. He is 47 years old. I thought up of a new ActionMax game idea, but I need it to snow in order to film it.

47 Meatballs - March 2020

So thefarside.com is nothing more than the old comics. Disappointed, I decided to make my own like-comics. I just drew three for today for March 2020. (I usually make comics one month in advance.) Longtime readers of this blog may have heard of my on-line comic "47 Meatballs." Well, it's returning. Every Monday starting March 16, I will put an online comic on the website. I would like some feedback. Mainly on how big the letters in the tic-tac-toe game are and if they're legible because it's a m
