The return of Aaron

For the first time in almost 10 months, I worked on Aaron the Aardvark for the Jaguar again. The time was spent trying to add a big huge boss in the game. And that introduced a lot of bugs. It's hard to tell whether I got rid of them all or not. Here is a picture of the very big UFO for Aaron to shoot his poop at. So here what Aaron has to do is keep shooting. It doesn't matter here where he shoots, he'll hit the ship. The hard part is avoiding the lasers. He'll get three points for e

A new way

So now with a whole bunch of code written, I now get to learn a new way of compiling Frank the Fruit Fly. Even though it's called "assembly," it looks like a whole new language. So I'm going to put Frank the Fruit Fly on hold and begin learning this new "Epson" assembly. And MSYS as well. And all the other stuff I learned today. It will be hard, but it might get rid of the weird bugs I have been experiencing with Frank the Fruit Fly in the emulator (even though they don't show up on a real Pokem

Long Song #49

In case you don't already know, I'm collecting songs that are 15 minutes or longer on CD. I have a few that I have on records and not on CD, but now I'm just mainly focusing on CDs because the technology is better, they can last forever (theoretically), and they are smaller. Well, anyway, I went out and got the album Eat a Peach by the Allman Brothers Band which has a song called Mountain Jam on it that is 33 minutes long. It's called Mountain Jam because it's loosely based on Donovan's song "Th

47 Meatballs - March 2020

So thefarside.com is nothing more than the old comics. Disappointed, I decided to make my own like-comics. I just drew three for today for March 2020. (I usually make comics one month in advance.) Longtime readers of this blog may have heard of my on-line comic "47 Meatballs." Well, it's returning. Every Monday starting March 16, I will put an online comic on the website. I would like some feedback. Mainly on how big the letters in the tic-tac-toe game are and if they're legible because it's a m

Flies - title screen

So I spent a few hours making a title screen for the Channel F fly game. The fly is flapping his wings here. But I've had the worst time trying to get the fly's position to be random when you press fire to start. It always is at the same place. I worked on it some more this morning. While I was working, there was this stupid nosehair that started bugging me. So I went to the bathroom and I pulled it out. It was a white nosehair. I've had white nosehairs before, it's just a sign tellin

It's April 1.

I've been sitting here in the dark for about a week now. I've been up all night and asleep all day so I can't get to go to Lowe's to get that special light bulb I need. Mom brought down a lamp from the attic that looks like it's a million years old, but it still works, so I've been using that to light up the room.   To keep myself busy and to keep me from not go insane, I have been working on my various projects still. I have begun a new one from my love of crossword puzzles. I plan to

Minor changes

I won't put up a picture because it looks so similar to the previous version. Although I did add some yummy Chex pieces to the game. And I made them appear less fequently. I actually had to delete a line of code to make that happen. I called the RNG and added an "and #1" to get a number between 0-1. I just deleted that line to get a number between 0-255. And since I wanted it to appear less, I made any value above 240 the Chex piece. Since I wanted it to appear about 1/16th the time as the pretz

Finally!

So I resumed work on Craig the Cranberry for the VB. I wanted to put in Chad and Chuck the cherries. My original idea wasn't going to work. So I had to come up with a second one. The trick to getting past the cherries is to get in the middle of them while they walk towards you, and then when you're in the middle, wait until it starts walking again and lifts its right "leg" to exit. You can't jump over them because if you jump, they'll jump. But when I was done with that, I wanted to p

Music to my ears

...or rather FOR my ears. I've been listening to MIDIs of long songs. It alleviates the boredom. So does MAKING them. So does collecting them. I just finished my MIDI I had been working on of "Macho City" by the Steve Miller Band on the thirteenth. Really surprised it hadn't been done before given how old the song is. And if it has, well, I made my own interpretation of it. When it came out, I was not yet alive. So I'm always looking for a new long song to make a MIDI out of, the older and not y

Success!

So I finally worked for a few hours and finally got my TI 84+ responding to the computer. But the bad news is the software used to make assembly files is too old and won't respond to 64-bit Windows computers. So I went back to work on my Basic program. A plus sign multiplying itself while trying to avoid an asterisk doesn't really make for good gaming, so I guess I'll go back to working on my other stuff. When that cable comes I am going to try TILP with it. TI Connect software only s

More hamburgers

Work on HERTS2. I had to redo tons of stuff because something wasn't working right. It claimed there was no room in bank 0. So I had to redo some code. Eventually I'll make new music and put it in. But for now, here's the title screen. That's quite a yummy-looking hamburger. And the title screen burgers (they look small here) are flying from left to right. In fact, I've already thought of level 1's location: Outer space. I've thought of some more locations: snow-covered field, desert.

I'm giving up.

I give up. Making my own NES game has proved too hard. There are just too many bugs that keep popping up. So I guess I'll have to give up on it. It was an interesting experiment, but it's too hard and I can't do it any more. But don't worry, I have stuff I can do anyway, like my music no one will listen to, or my comics no one will read. I just want to die soon. All my work is is just me waiting to die so I can stop suffering. But apparently I'll never die. Five million years later, I'll still b

Lovely birthday

I had a good birthday. I got a couple of Switch games I need to try to get to. And some other stuff. And I decided to attempt to recode the part of Frank the Fruit Fly that has been giving me problems ever since I started on it. And I tested it for five minutes. Resetting the game over and over again and pressing B to get to the password screen. Not once did it do its stupid problem it's been doing about freezing and music going crazy and needing to reset.   But I am so sleepy now that

Vivaldi-less

So I have been working on another project. I had a font called "Vivaldi" I had been using for it. But when I reset my computer a few weeks ago because it was acting horribly, I had lost it. I hadn't worked on it since before that happened, so I was unaware that it would look crappy. It replaced Vivaldi with Comic Sans MS. So I was on the hunt for a new font that looked like Vivaldi because apparently I needed to pay to use it for some reason.   I found a new font on dafont.com called "

Level intro

I drew a picture of what I wanted the level intro picture to look like. I draw ideas on paper. Some ideas I have aren't implemented in the game yet. Like today's idea I got about some enemies I haven't put in the game yet. Chad and Chuck are a couple of cherries. I figured if they look like legs (like I drew them) then they should move like legs. But anyway, back to what I was saying. I put a level intro in the game. This is it. The stage number and location can be changed because it'

Dinosaur! (the title screen)

About 17 hours ago, I put on the internet the beginnings of a game I began working on called "Dinosaur!". This is for the Atari 2600 using assembly. And it's my most ambitious assembly game I have to date. What I want in the end is a game like "Jurassic Park" (for the NES). I bought Jurassic Park for the NES. (I also have a Game Gear version.) I haven't played it yet, but I know what the objectives are: To clear levels and shoot dinosaurs. I woke up at 6 p.m. after going to bed (finally) at 4 a.

Let there be light!

So I finally got the chance to go to Lowe's to get that dumb light bulb I needed. I had to ask the guy where they were. They came in a two pack, so I'm all set for the next 7 years (I got the previous one in 2016). I also had a little bit of trouble trying to get the dumb light bulb into where it is supposed to be plugged into. Five minutes later, after fighting with a light bulb, I got it in. And it works. Now that dumb lamp can go back in the attic. Hooray. Now it's light in here. I didn't kno

Ideas.

So today I went to the doctor's office. I finally fell asleep last night at about 10 p.m. and woke up at various points throughout the night, spent trying to get myself back to sleep. Well, I finally woke up at about 8:50a.m. got out of bed, got myself ready, and went to the doctor's office. There was a tent outside, I guess to help treat those who may have "the virus." They checked my temperature, asked me if I was in any contact with anyone who had "the virus", and if I felt sick when I exited

Blog entry #700!

So what am I going to blog about for the big 700? Well, I got two 2600 games in the mail today (China Syndrome & Mountain King). I went to Game Crazy (a local one, not the national one) and got 4 Saturn games. I went to K-Mart and got Dream Pinball for the DS. So it's a big haul of games today. Mountain King is kind of an absurd game, but well-made. Now I have 224 Atari 2600 games and I want more. I don't think I'll ever stop. I want to be like Marco. Well, not *that* obsessive. I just want

A Channel F Thanksgiving?

I was thinking about the phrase "you lose turkey" in Tic-Tac-Toe for the Channel F. I tie it to Thanksgiving, since it's Turkey Day. So if you're playing it on Thanksgiving and you lose to the computer, it takes away part of your turkey. And then I thought, what goes good with turkey? Cranberry sauce. Which is where Quest of the Cranberry comes in. I doubt I'll be able to complete QotC by Thanksgiving, so it will have to be a Thanksgiving tradition to play these two games if I ever finish progra

The process of getting stupid

Or perhaps it's just a case of using too much brain power. I finally solved the last 4 puzzles of Polarium on the DS. Without using a cheat sheet. I was so frustrated back then that I had to resort to one back when it was new. But now, only using hints, I solved the last 4 puzzles. I was trying to get some good ideas for my 1-Line game I was making for the Atari 2600. I got this one idea, and so I tested it and solved it, but now I can't solve it again. Nor can I the other 3 puzzles I made. But

Some other stuff

I was getting nowhere fast on my Nosehair project. It kept giving me an unsteady picture. So I decided to give up and pursue other things. Like my webcomic. I am apparently one of the only remaining people who even use Comic Genesis any more. Sometimes reading the newspaper can give me ideas for my comic. Other times I just think of unusual things, and what could be a funny pun or comment I could make out of it. I got behind, and my comics ended on Nov. 3. Election Day. I made a special day-afte

No noise

So I was working on something on my video editing software when all of a sudden, I couldn't hear anything it was doing. My speakers were working fine. So I tried resetting the computer and see if that solved it. No, still silence. And then I got a notice that I needed to update Windows, so I did that. That didn't help either, so I guess I won't be making videos until I get to Best Buy or something to get new video editing software that actually WORKS. I know I'm not getting Pinnacle, because of

NBA Live '98

Aaaand, SNES Reverse Chronogaming has returned. Sacramento beat Vancouver 84-79. Fortunately, I was Sacramento in my first NBA Live '98 outing. For a guy whose only video game basketball experience is NBA Jam, this was an adventure out of my comfort zone. The Grizzlies had the lead a few times, but fortunately a few late errors by Vancouver, I was able to win by 5. A few times the AI started going up the floor while I had the ball, making me wonder if I actually did. So I just shot it and it wen

Weekly doodles #1

Every Sunday I will present one of my comic strips I make because I have nothing else better to do, well, except for programming video games. But drawing is my second passion. What I did was take an 8.5x11 piece of paper and make it horizontal and think about what could be funny. Then when an idea hits, I take one half of the page and draw it, like a comic strip. What I used for the measurement of a normal comic strip was I looked one up on the King Features website and used that. So anyway, I n
