Three in a row

When I get tired of working on one project, I make a different side-project, just to change gears, and who knows, maybe if I learn something from it, I can use it in another project. I challenged myself to make a tic-tac-toe game in bB using only 4K. This is the result. There might be still some tweaks to this, but for the most part is playable. Here's the breakdown of the games you can choose with the game select switch: game 1 - Vs. computer, you start game 2 - Vs. computer, computer starts

Gotta have them all

Well, I just bought Fantasy Zone for the NES from eBay. I think I overpaid, but not by very much (which is why I bought it.) So once the payment clears and it's shipped to me, I'll have every black Tengen NES title. I've been wanting to complete this collection ever since I started it, and I think I did. Right now, I have 19 different titles, and Fantasy Zone will be the 20th. The black NES carts rock! I think they look cool. Also, (I've said this before), I find it fascinating that even in the

Bees and aliens

With summer rapidly approaching, all the insects have decided to wake up and go about their business. The world would be a much better place without them. This is especially true with bees, because they have the ability to sting people. I've been stung twice in my life, once when I was a kid, and once in middle school. I hate insects. All of them. Intelligent design my foot. Also, I was watching the History Channel when I ran across this show that suggested that ancient gods were actually alien

Collecting time

At least I have a somewhat complete collection of something: Sacagawea dollar coins. All of them are Denver minted except for 2003 which is a Philly one (presumably because it was cheaper.) For this year and the next three years, they have changed the coin. The date and "E Pluribus Unum" are on the side. Why did they go and mess with that coin? About 50 years from now, I might not know what the date is because my eye sight probably won't be as good, and I couldn't probably see the year. Well, an

I can't fly.

So I played Nights: Journey of Dreams. I turned it off after trying to figure out how to fly. Sure, I could fly, but the controls are horrible for flying. Maybe it's been just too much Mario Kart or something. Still no Golf for the Virtual Boy but I did get Solar Storm for the 2600 in the mail today. Still can't e-mail the Goat Store to ask what in the heck happened to my order. It's beginning to look like I'll never get it. But I am going to the mall, the game store, and Best Buy tomorrow, as

To-Nights

Went to Wal-Mart today to get some more computer paper and saw Nights: Journey Into Dreams for Nintendo Wii for $10 and decided to buy it. Heck, it was only $10. So I'll have something new to play for the Wii tonight (once Mom goes to sleep...) and my grand total of Wii games is...5 (if you count Wii Sports.) I'd like to get Klonoa and Wario Land: Shake It, but the $50 price tag for Wario seems like a bit too much. Why does it have to be so expensive, it's not like it's a Mario game or anything.

Making up for lost time

I haven't been paying much attention to my 2600 lately. Apart from a few games of Strat-O-Gems Deluxe and some repros, I haven't been doing much lately with it. Well, I'm just working out some deals that will, once everything is said and done, raise my 2600 collection total to 270 unique titles. The games I'll be getting are: Solar Storm, Fathom, Survival Run, Taz, Flash Gordon, Sub-Scan, and M.A.D. I'm still waiting for Golf for the Virtual Boy to come from the Goat Store, so I was going to wri

Another rejection letter...

One time, I submitted a comic to King Features Syndicate and Universal Press Syndicate. Only King Features Syndicate was nice enough to send me a rejection letter. This was of a Far Side clone called "47 Meatballs." Well, since then, I've been making a webcomic about a 13-year-old girl named Jessica called, appropriately enough, "Jessica." So, I've decided to give this one a try, but before I do, I need to look through about 200 comics I've done in the past 3 years and redraw them to fit a daily

My life update

Went to my local game store. They didn't have anything I wanted. I did see a 3DO bundled with 4 games for $150. There were a whole bunch of other games for it, too. I've been working hard on Tetris for the 2600, basically starting from scratch. That was a few days ago, leaving GoSub for VB not being worked on. Well, I finally added level 15 for GoSub. Tomorrow I get pizza when we celebrate my mom's birthday which was Thursday, also the day I went to the dentist. Isn't it good to celebrate an hou

263

One of my packages came. It had repros of Wizard, Secret Agent and Planet of the Apes, which brings my total # of Atari 2600 games to 263, inching ever so closer to the 300 mark. Right now it looks kind of doubtful that I'll reach 300 this year, maybe early 2010. I have to go to the dentist tomorrow for my 6-month checkup. I think every 6 months is a little obsessive, but they insist that I do that. My mouth feels fine, though, so I don't really feel the need to. Poor mom has to take me there on

Virtual Boy stuff

I'm still waiting for my Golf game. The mail came today and it wasn't in there. I've also been working on GoSub for Virtual Boy. I've added level 14. You can find the ROM here. I've added a level select screen, where you press left and right on the D-pad to select your level and start to start on it. To get to it, press select on the title screen, which is "W" in the Reality Boy emulator (if you're using a standard QWERTY keyboard.)

Quarantine

You probably don't remember my movies that begin with the letter Q collection. Well, this weekend I got Quarantine and Quills. I actually sat down and watched a non-MST3K movie. Quarantine is a stupid movie. It's a horror movie about a building in Los Angeles that has been quarantined because people keep getting infected with a strain of super-rabies in it (well, they don't call it super rabies, but just to get you an idea of what's going on.) There's a reporter woman who is job shadowing a few

Went to the game store

I went to the used video game store, and wasn't having much luck until I came across a Virtual Boy with manual and Mario's Tennis. Ugh, Mario's Tennis again, but I ended up buying it, and now I have 2 Virtual Boys. This was $49.99. It would have been more, but there was a piece missing on the stand and unit that doesn't make it bob up and down. I'll be trying to get one soon on the internet, but in the meantime, I'm so happy I now have 2 of them. I don't care that I payed more than I should have

GoSub VB update

I finally did 2 things that I wanted to do: Add a level select screen, and have the words "LIVES" and "LEVEL" fade in with the rest of the game. For the level select screen, press Select instead of Start at the title screen. The level select screen is only a number right now. Use left and right to move the level number and press Start to start at the level number selected. You can download the latest ROM and source code here.

Last PayPal order of the month...

Well, today was the big day. After over a month of waiting, my Goat Store package came. Panic Bomber was in Japanese, so I couldn't really figure out what i was doing much, and i had no idea what the characters were saying, but it was kind of fun. I also got Thunderground, Cosmic Creeps and Popeye for the 2600. And now, I've ordered Golf for the Virtual Boy. Speaking of that, here's the latest on GoSub, a zip file with source and rom.

Smothered by Smothers Brothers

Well, I went to Best Buy and saw something i could not pass up: The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour: The Best of Season 3. This goes good with my Laugh-In and Old School Sesame Street volume 1. Well, anyway, I've also some Smothers Bros. records I play sometimes, so it's good to have the show that I never got to see (the late '60s one. My dad taped a few episodes of the '80s revival series.) So I've got a lot of Smothers Brothers stuff to watch. Is there anything else from that time period i shoul

Attack of the disappearing lines

In level 6 of GoSub for VB, I decided to put in lines that appear and disappear, like in the later levels of the 2600 version. Right now, I'm at 6 levels, a title screen, and the engine, and it's still only 256k. I'm thinking by the time it's 1,024k, it could have 15 or more screens, so I can put around 30 in and have it be 2MB. Of course, I could put like 100 in and have it be 8MB, but I don't know if I can design that many levels. Well, to see level 6, check it out here, and I'd love feedback,

Sesame Street still popular

Last night, I put a song from Sesame Street (Disco Toothbrush) on YouTube. I went to sleep and woke up to find that 79 people have viewed it and there were 2 comments, making it one of the most popular videos on my YouTube account in mere hours. Apparently it's a rare song, and i guess i'm lucky to have it. Oh, and there are now 3 levels of GoSub for VB, you can check them out here. And, for the curious, the Disco Toothbrush song.

Latest on GoSub for VB

I had to change the shape of the sub in order for the collision for the walls to work properly. As you can see, it's more like the Atari 2600 version, yet still has a little more detail to it. (Note the rings around the windows.) The title screen has stayed the same, though. I don't know whether to change it too, or just keep it the way it is. Anyway, you can find the latest ROM, source code, and all that other good stuff here. Feedback would be appreciated.

The wall

Well, in GoSub development news, I got the wall up for level 1. There is no collision detection yet, as I can't quite seem to understand it yet. Here's a picture of it:   In other news, the appliance repair people came and told us we need a new dishwasher. It had been acting up and hating us, so we called these people to try and fix it and they just said to get a new one. The computer inside our current dishwasher would cost $500 to replace. So any advice on what brand/where to get a new dis

They grow so fast

...my video games, that is. While working on GoSub for Virtual Boy, I inadvertently passed the 64k mark. Now my video game won't work (with all my included files) unless I do something to something, but i don't know what that thing is. Here is what my updated title screen looks like, though:   In other news, I got Road Runner for NES in the mail today, so I left all 5-star feedback this time so I won't feel so guilty. Also, I was watching an eBay auction on Tetris 3D for Virtual Boy. In the

Maze mock-up

Here's what I'm imagining for the maze screens to look like: I wonder if it can actually look like that. I hope so. I'm also going to add a treasure chest to get (and maybe an optional octopus that you can shoot.) The real challenge now would be to design more mazes with blocks like that. I may have to make the submarine smaller so it can fit through smaller passages (that shouldn't be too hard if I need to). Also, hopefully I can put a design in the blocks so they won't have to look so bland

GoSub keeps on chuggin'

I've added a little slice of the "engine". At the title screen, press Start and you'll go to a blank maze where you can move the sub up, down, left and right (but not diagonally.) There are no borders, so once it goes off the screen, if you press the opposite direction it was going, it will come back. I have absolutely no idea how I'll do the maze walls, but if something like VUE Snake can be done (with blocks making up a snake), I bet it might be doable.Click here for the latest version.

GoSub...for Virtual Boy?!

I'm working on GoSub for the Virtual Boy. This decision comes after noticing there are too few games for it. This is going to be a long uphill battle, as it took me 48 hours just to get this: That, and i have to learn C, and not only that, I have to learn all the functions of the Virtual Boy. I did have this screen a day ago (albeit the text was in a different spot), but was informed that i could do it an "easier" way, which turned out to be even harder. But I got through that way also. Confused by eBay feedback

I got Shinobi in the mail today. The guy who sold it to me gave me excellent rating, which now brings me to a 100% rating. I gave positive feedback to him, giving him 4 stars in all categories except one which I gave him a 5 on. I was a little bit confused on the meaning of the ratings, hopefully i didn't damage his reputation by not giving him 5 stars. Why am I confused? Well, how can an item description be "neither accurate nor inaccurate"? What is the difference between "accurate" and "very a
