Well, actually I did forget, but I remembered it once again. What am I talking about? That Odyssey game I was planning on making. I have an overlay being sent to me so I know what they look like and what they're made of so I can see if I can do this easily or not. And remember, if you are a good artist or so and want to help me out with the background overlay, contact me via PM and I'll send you info on what I'm looking for. Anyway, I'm pretty excited to see if I can start on getting this done o
Company: TDK
Size: 32 Megabits
NP's Rating: 4.5/5 (volume 149 p.123)
ESRB Rating: E (Mild Violence)
Where have I seen that TDK logo before? Ah yes, on old blank cardboard VHS tape covers! Well, anyway, TDK apparently hit a high note, at least in this GBA game-playing project I'm doing, with a fairly decent platform game. The editors at Nintendo Power think that the game is too easy. Suuuure it is. No, they're wrong. It's kinda difficult, especially when you need to attack enemies with not
So, I plugged in Super Mario Advance 4 (SMB3), where they put a place that has all the worlds (a world world map, you might say) to choose a world after you have beaten the game. I had tried to make a MIDI of the music that plays on that screen before, but I had left out a few things. The music sure does change once you put headphones into your Game Boy Micro, you hear instruments that you might have not heard before. Wonder why? Well, anyway, I had figured out all the notes and started making i
After seeing Hyper Fighting as well as the earlier Street Fighter 2 port, I still decided to restart work on my own Virtual Boy fighting game, although I kind of feel like I don't need to any more since that genre has been overrepresented in the Virtual Boy homebrew scene as of late. But to my credit, the life of Insecticide began several years ago, long before these other VB fighting games were made. So I had apparently run into a few problems with my Flash Boy acting strange. It was either tha
Here I was, I had completed a crossword. It has the word rigider in it. See, Word doesn't recognize it as a word. Neither does dictionary.com, nor my Scrabble dictionary. I was angry. In a last ditch effort to decide whether "rigider" was a word or not, I googled it. Up came the wiki dictionary. It had rigider in it. Just like I thought it should be a word, a comparative form of "rigid." So I'm keeping the word in the crossword (it's like people actually do them.) I think it should be a word. My
So I think I finished the game after working for a few hours putting a saving card option and redealing option in. You can opt to keep some or all of your cards. After pressing deal, it gives you new (random) cards and your final hand. I think I solved a few bugs because I had the card numbers in the redealing part of the code backwards. It would help immensely to have them in the correct order. Because they weren't, it kept missing pairs. Anyway, if you have Mednafen or a FlashBoy, please tes
Yes, I did a little more DXing last night, and what a night it was. From Salem, Oregon, I got an AM station from Denver, Colorado (KOA), my farthest so far. Also got another station from Vancouver, BC (CKNW) which at the time was playing old radio shows from the 40s, even though it's a news-talk station. Weird. Well, that makes 11 stations so far I've taped from various parts of the western U.S. If anyone is interested in my DX log, I'll put it in a blog in the next few days.
Now that I'm working on a platform game, I thought it'd be fun to make a Nintendo Power-style map for it. Nintendo Power doesn't do maps any more because all the games are 3D.(well, they could still do them for games like Mario Kart Wii, but I bet they'll choose not to), but back in the day I remember these maps for 2D side-scrolling platform games, so I've been making this map, which I'll add on to as I think of more levels.
I thought of what i think is a good idea: If you don't have any mail on a particular day, the mail carrier should put a little piece of paper in your mailbox that says something to the effect of "You didn't get any mail today." That way, people wouldn't have to check over and over again to see if the mailman came, because sometimes they're super duper late, and sometimes they're early. This way, you would know and not have to care any more about checking for the mail that day.
I got a used CD.
So, I was going to go to Best Buy to get a DVD-VCR combo, when my mom said that i should probably wait and see if it goes on sale first and if it doesn't, then buy it. So instead, we went to the used video game store (called Game Crazy, but it's not the national chain, it's a local outfit with two locations: S. Salem and Lancaster. There used to be a Keizer one, but it sadly closed.) Well, anyway, I ended up reigniting my N64 love and bought Space Invaders. I also have planned ahead and I want t
I actually had Bank Heist, so I don't need to look for it. I just forgot to put it on the list. Jawbreaker arrived today. It was in kind of bad shape. The end label was missing, and the game didn't want to work at first. So I cleaned it a little bit. Got the title screen, but once I pressed the reset switch the game zonked out on me. I finally got it working another cleaning later. This is another case of a game being easier using buttons on a keyboard in an emulator than by using a joystick and
I love me a stupid movie. This time, though there was a deal I couldn't pass up: a 100-movie pack at Best Buy for $30. Some of the titles I recognize from MST3K (Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, Ring of Terror, The Phantom Creeps.) Some sound very stupid (which I like. Stuff like The Day the Sky Exploded, and Purple Death From Outer Space.) I just got finished watching Robot Pilot. That link takes you to a movie called Emergency Landing. I think it's the same movie, though. One thing I hate ab
This is quite possibly the dumbest game I have played for this blog. Yes, kids, it's even worse than the Castlevania debacle I experienced. I think there are two main problems I had with this game. #1 - I never watched the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers so I had no idea who anyone was. #2 - the game is just so damned hard. I mean, there is this mine in a level where there there is a hole. While you are supposed to fall down some holes to progress in the level, once you fall down this particular on
I have made a page for my in-development Odyssey homebrew game. You can find it here. I have also found a local box company that I think could make custom boxes for me. Once I get everything done, I'll ask for a quote. But the thing is they're cardboard boxes so they'll be brown, instead of the usual black boxes that Odyssey boxes are. I have designed a sticker to put over part of the box if that comes to fruition. I wonder if Avery makes 8.5x11 labels to print this on. So yeah, it looks like it
It took me two and a half hours to make a what would seem to be simple change to one of the new secret programs I'm making. Well, there's only one secret program I'm making. After a few failed attempts, I told myself "I am going to get this stupid thing fixed." After two hours, I got it fixed, but only on O2EM and Homer. When I went to test it on real hardware, it wouldn't work. About a half hour later, I got it working on real hardware. It shouldn't have to be this hard. Or am I just stupid? I
I was thrilled when I read Sunday's newspaper (yes, I still read the newspaper.) I saw that Sue Grafton was going to eschew her naming of alphabet novels (i.e. R is for Ricochet), and just name the latest one "X". Why do I care? It's not because the series is the same age I am, it's because I have a little library of one-letter book titles. Believe it or not, they are actually somewhat easy to find. Going by a list I found on the internet and going to various area book stores, I was able to find
Yesterday after I posted my blog entry, I got bored. So I decided to continue work on Frank. After a few hours, I finally got it so pressing a button makes the game start. What's more is I finally got it to make a second song play. I went to sleep for 11 hours (couldn't get to sleep until 1 a.m.) and woke up and changed the second song from a test to an actual second song. It isn't a very long song, though. I want to have as much space available as possible for the game elements. Right now the g
I'm working on a sequel to Gosub called, well, Gosub 2. And thanks to SeaGtGruff's suggestion on my Capital I game, the first version was 1,695 bytes. After implementing said thingee, it was 2,151 bytes, a saving of over 450 bytes! Right now, there's 4 screens, but I hope to have over 10 by the time it's finished, which should be in early 2007.
I really should get back to programming the capital I game, but I have no idea what to do next when it comes to screens. At first, it was just a demo t
First of all, I got rid of the missile firing. Just in case a lot of you clamor for it back, I've saved a backup of the 12-11-06a version. Second, now that the missiles are gone, I've slimmed it down to 8k. Before while it was technically 16k, in reality, it was only about 9k. 8k is a bit more reasonable for me to handle because there's only 2 banks instead of 4, which means, well, I'm lazy. I have managed to fit everything else in 8k with 262 bytes left in bank 1 and 762 bytes left in bank 2,
This long song collecting thing has been really great for broadening my music horizons. Through it, I've gotten to know the music of Yes, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Dream Theater, Rush, Miles Davis, and more recently Tangerine Dream. I'm going to the mall tomorrow to see if I can get some more at fye. Specifically, I'm looking for "Autobahn" by Kraftwerk. Probably won't be there because it's a German band, but it was released on CD in the US
Another "I got bored" project. I had wondered since I've been thinking about 2600 games in 1990 recently (hence my forthcoming copy of Klax), and since "The Simpsons" premiered in 1990, why not put The Simpsons and the 2600 together? I don't know what YOU would get, but I got this. After the Bart Simpson blinking eyes title screen, press fire to go into the "game," which is just for now Bart as his superhero alter-ego Bartman flying in the sky. I have yet to try this on real hardware, but I am c
I just got done with the fifth issue of 2600 Scene. I quit working on it, skipping May, but the June 2013 issue is here. If you want to download and read it, you can get it here: http://www.atari2600land.com/2600scene/
I got the boss fight for level 6 of Plim done. I added the Flight of the Bumblebee music since Frank is fighting a giant bee. I have no idea what to make level 7 be. Perhaps in a forest of some kind. (He was in a tree in level 6.) I don't think I can get 10 levels programmed in w
So I have been working on Insecticide again. My monthly workathon, lol. Yesterday I thought I had it all figured out. And then when I went to play test it for the final time last night, I saw lots of stupid errors I had done. Well, I worked some more today and I don't know what I did, but I fixed most of them. Total time working so far this month: about 7 hours. It gets me so angry, though. It's getting to be the more I put in the game, the more it gets screwed up. Bugs permitting, I think I may
So here I am working on Insecticide when I turn it off. So I turn it back on later and some lines of text from when it was on appear. I talked about this in yesterday's blog entry, but today I think I finally fixed it. I turned it off at every point text is on the screen (which is basically every screen) and it all works fine now. And Hyper Fighting is the same game as the Street Fighter 2 game. I thought they were two different ones. Well, today's exercise was to get in the opponent's jumping s
Well, I think I am finished with Stickman. That is to say, the project is completed. And if not, it's pretty darn close. The erasers have four speeds. I wanted to put in a fifth, but during testing, I could never get to the fifth level, so i just went with four. The score has to be down there because if I put it up top, it blinks and disappears and I don't want it to do that. And I am angry because I put a place offer on an eBay item 24 hours ago and he hasn't replied. I just think it's so stupi
