Gosub 2

I'm working on a sequel to Gosub called, well, Gosub 2. And thanks to SeaGtGruff's suggestion on my Capital I game, the first version was 1,695 bytes. After implementing said thingee, it was 2,151 bytes, a saving of over 450 bytes! Right now, there's 4 screens, but I hope to have over 10 by the time it's finished, which should be in early 2007. I really should get back to programming the capital I game, but I have no idea what to do next when it comes to screens. At first, it was just a demo t

GoSub undergoing major changes

First of all, I got rid of the missile firing. Just in case a lot of you clamor for it back, I've saved a backup of the 12-11-06a version. Second, now that the missiles are gone, I've slimmed it down to 8k. Before while it was technically 16k, in reality, it was only about 9k. 8k is a bit more reasonable for me to handle because there's only 2 banks instead of 4, which means, well, I'm lazy. I have managed to fit everything else in 8k with 262 bytes left in bank 1 and 762 bytes left in bank 2,

Long Music

This long song collecting thing has been really great for broadening my music horizons. Through it, I've gotten to know the music of Yes, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Dream Theater, Rush, Miles Davis, and more recently Tangerine Dream. I'm going to the mall tomorrow to see if I can get some more at fye. Specifically, I'm looking for "Autobahn" by Kraftwerk. Probably won't be there because it's a German band, but it was released on CD in the US

Do the Bartman!

Another "I got bored" project. I had wondered since I've been thinking about 2600 games in 1990 recently (hence my forthcoming copy of Klax), and since "The Simpsons" premiered in 1990, why not put The Simpsons and the 2600 together? I don't know what YOU would get, but I got this. After the Bart Simpson blinking eyes title screen, press fire to go into the "game," which is just for now Bart as his superhero alter-ego Bartman flying in the sky. I have yet to try this on real hardware, but I am c

"2600 Scene" issue 5

I just got done with the fifth issue of 2600 Scene. I quit working on it, skipping May, but the June 2013 issue is here. If you want to download and read it, you can get it here: http://www.atari2600land.com/2600scene/ I got the boss fight for level 6 of Plim done. I added the Flight of the Bumblebee music since Frank is fighting a giant bee. I have no idea what to make level 7 be. Perhaps in a forest of some kind. (He was in a tree in level 6.) I don't think I can get 10 levels programmed in w

Anger-Inducing Bugs

So I have been working on Insecticide again. My monthly workathon, lol. Yesterday I thought I had it all figured out. And then when I went to play test it for the final time last night, I saw lots of stupid errors I had done. Well, I worked some more today and I don't know what I did, but I fixed most of them. Total time working so far this month: about 7 hours. It gets me so angry, though. It's getting to be the more I put in the game, the more it gets screwed up. Bugs permitting, I think I may

What bugs my bugs

So here I am working on Insecticide when I turn it off. So I turn it back on later and some lines of text from when it was on appear. I talked about this in yesterday's blog entry, but today I think I finally fixed it. I turned it off at every point text is on the screen (which is basically every screen) and it all works fine now. And Hyper Fighting is the same game as the Street Fighter 2 game. I thought they were two different ones. Well, today's exercise was to get in the opponent's jumping s

Finished with Stickman?

Well, I think I am finished with Stickman. That is to say, the project is completed. And if not, it's pretty darn close. The erasers have four speeds. I wanted to put in a fifth, but during testing, I could never get to the fifth level, so i just went with four. The score has to be down there because if I put it up top, it blinks and disappears and I don't want it to do that. And I am angry because I put a place offer on an eBay item 24 hours ago and he hasn't replied. I just think it's so stupi

Alien Greed 5

I've had Alien Greed 5 in my mind ever since Alien Greed 4 got released. But it keeps being forgotten about. But something reminded me of it, and so I got to working on it. I had a rather nasty bug that wouldn't go away. I was working on the assumption that the computer was being a giant douche and hating me. But after a few hours of working and trying and working and trying, I think I finally got it to go away. I need to playtest some more to see if the other bugs I had went away as well. There

HTML5

I must use style tags now. My old way of coding HTML is obsolete and apparently will no longer function. But I suppose it's better in a way since it uses less typing. So in order to change a link's color, you'd use this: <style> a:link { color: #dd0000; } a:visited { color: #ffffff; } a:hover { color: #883333; }</style> I have been working on the Haunted House website today. I added a couple of pictures, and changed the link color from a hard-to-see blue against a black b

Making a video poker game - part 3

So I noticed a few things: #1. The last redealt card was always the ace of hearts. Wanting to change this, I apparently accidentally broke the game. It took a few hours to fix it. #2 - If the player hit the deal button while the win/lose song was playing, the note held into the next hand. This was an easy fix, though, compared to the other one. I must have playtested the stupid thing a half-dozen tries before I finally tested it for 10 minutes and it seems to be working okay. I noticed that my

Power Factor

Power Factor is basically a side-scrolling Xybots. You go around shooting stuff, much like Abadox, only you're a guy and it's not forced-scrolling, and it's in a building. Normally, I would say a game like this is a meh, at best, but what saves this game from it is the codes. I can't play games very good (which is why I like puzzle games), so when a game comes along with an invincibility code, especially for the Lynx, I get it. Without it, I can only go as far as level 2 (Yes, I can beat level 1

last games for consoles - update

Just bought Samurai Deeper Kyo for GBA, which was released in February 2008 and, to the best of my knowledge, is the last (licensed) GBA game released in the States. Spent $<18 on it. I'm going to the used video game store Saturday to look for Ratatouille for the GameCube, which is the last GCN game released I could find, was apparently released June 26, 2007. A funny thing about Nintendo's "Master Games" list: It doesn't have every GBA game on it! So it doesn't have High School Musical: Livi

Lego Bionicle

This looks like a game I wouldn't be interested in. Played the Training Mode, which is good to get a feel for the game without actually starting a new file. Basically what you do is walk around like Link trying to solve puzzles and stuff. The movement is kinda difficult, especially trying to throw those dumb turtles and use them as stepping stones across water. And so is diagonal movement, which is kind of necessary for the game. Plus, I figured the fact that Lego in its title would lend one to

you died.

Well I put the message "YOU DIED." whenever you eat a poisonous pink pickle (say that three times fast!) in Fatso!, my Fast Food-like game for the Odyssey2. I've decided I want to keep it at 2k since I can't really think of any major changes I'd like to make to it. At first, the YOU DIED message was at the bottom next to the score, but apparently this doesn't work with the Jopac and displays the last three letters in italics and puts garbage above them too, even though I tried to duplicate the p

Super Giuseppe Bros. - level 2

Soon, I am going to program level 2. Level 1 (Paprika Plains - a tribute to the Joni Mitchell song) is finished. Level 2 will be falling down a hole, much like the second half of the Sunken Ghost Ship level of Super Mario World...or level 2 in the celery game. I think it will be easier to program, but I'll have to make a whole new loop for it because he's falling down, not going right. I don't know what to do if I go over 2k, though. Right now I'm at 1200 or so bytes. I think it would have to be

Recycling?

Are all 2600 homebrews put onto cartridges using old cartridge shells, or do people make new shells for old systems? The reason I'm asking is because I thought it would be fun to use a green shell for a project of mine. I looked on all the TigerVision cartridge pictures and although they have some funky colors (like Red for Jawbreaker), I didn't see any green ones. Are there any green 2600 shells in existence for any 2600 game? Or am I just out of luck? Anyway, I guess the GBA Chronogaming proje

FIFA Soccer 14 (part 1)

I am a bit sad and happy about this game being released for the PS2. Happy in the fact that a new PS2 is being released in 2013, but sad in that this is probably the way the PS2 is going out. I just got a PS2 recently and am looking for games for it. Although I probably won't play it, I thought getting the last PS2 game ever released would be a good addition to my library. Also sad is that PS2 is ending with a soccer game. Come on. Soccer? The PS2 is a great system, and doesn't deserve a freakin

Captain Bruce details

Hello, I am going to make a big trip to the post office on March 29. That is the day I'll mail out the new Odyssey 1 game Captain Bruce and His Cosmic Boomerang. I'd do it on April 1, but then people would think it was an April Fools' Day joke (I hate that "holiday".) I'll start accepting orders via PayPal the week before on March 22. Since it mysteriously cost a lot less to make this one, I can pass the savings on to you. So I'm going to make the price of it $10. Of course, there's no box this

I can't change Golf's courses

So last night I was trying to change the courses in Golf. As it turns out, it's impossible to. The location of the hole is key. If you change it, then the whole putting thing gets broken and the ball ends up in the white space and you can't move it. And the shape of the golf courses is hard as well because they're directly tied to the shape of the player. Change the shape of the fairway and you end up changing a frame of the swinging animation. Whoever designed this game needs a swift kick in th

Cedar Games - update

So I have been working on my Oranges game for the Odyssey 2 again. I don't know when it will be released. I added a couple of things and a bug fix. Another bug popped up but it's extremely hard to do and involves dying so I'm not going to worry about it. It doesn't impact the game playing experience, just something odd I stumbled upon. I plugged in the old Odyssey 2 which is in a permanent position right beside the TV. It lives there because it's so freaking huge. It still works, albeit a litt

Taco SaTurday

So I spent a few hours last night trying to put a taco in the Jaguar game I'm making. Turns out I ruined the whole thing. Luckily though I had a backup from the last time I worked on it and restarted from there. I went to bed Friday with no taco, but the game wasn't broken any more. I took my melatonin gummy at about 8pm and laid in bed for a few dismal boring hours before finally falling asleep at midnight. I did not want to get up though, but I did and tried again with the taco. I finally go

Wii uDraw

I can't find my Wii anywhere, so I guess I'll have to get a used one at the game store. So I found my uDraw games. I wanted to play them, but I need my Wii. I looked around, I found my Wii-U, but no Wii anywhere. And I can't use the Wii-U because I have no cord to plug it into the TV anywhere. What I basically want to do is make a Wii game. But not just an ordinary Wii game, but one that uses the uDraw. I found the uDraw, I found the games for it, but I have no Wii and I have no controller.

Staying at my dad's again

I'll be staying at my dad's apartment again tonight, and he doesn't have any internet access, which means I won't be up until 3am looking at the forums like I usually am. So I won't be able to answer anything starting at about 4 pm Pacific (7 pm Eastern, midnight England), but when I get home tomorrow, I'll be glad to answer any PMs, e-mails or topic replies that might have come while I'll be away. Just thought you might like to know. The weather is supposed to be cool this weekend (low to mid

One of those games

I went to EB Games and got a brand-new Major League Baseball 2K7 for DS. It's another game I just like to collect just for the heck of it. Sure, there are some games for the DS I actually play (like Mario Kart DS,) but others (such as Final Fantasy III) I collect just for the joy of collecting. I think I might have to go to Best Buy again to see if I can find Quickspot, a new DS game that looks fairly interesting. MLB 2K7 was only $20 new, so if you like baseball, I think it's the only baseball
