Some games I just wonder how they got released because they suck so badly. Such is the case with Pen Pen Triicelon. In the game, you control a penguin that races down icy slopes...or do you? I can't control the stupid penguin. How does one get the stupid thing to go fast enough to actually compete with other players? I just bash into a wall while all the other penguins keep going on their merry way. And then there's the whole flapping thing. How do I do this to get enough speed to actually see t
My sister Stacie and her boyfriend John are still wondering what a good name for their baby boy that's due in September is. Seeing as how John is a Monty Python fan (as am I), I suggested Ausfernschplendenschlittercrasscrenbonfrieddiggerdingledangledongledungleburstein-vonknackerthrasherapplebangerhorowitzticolensicgranderknottyspelltinklegrandlich-grumblemeyerspelterwasserkurtslichhimbleeisenbahnwagengutenabendbitteinnurnburger-bratwustlegerspurtenmitzweimachluberhundsfutgumberabershonendanker-
I just bought Rayman 3 for the N-Gage. I've been eyeing it for some time now, and just got the urge to buy it, so i did. I also have Rayman on the Saturn and GBA, neither of which I play very much (in fact, I don't know what to do with my Saturn games, come to think of them, I never play them. Maybe I'll sell them. I doubt they'd sell in the Marketplace forum because my Gamecube games are still with me. How come nobody wants any of my games I'm trying to get rid of?!) Anyway, back to Rayman and
It's never too early to think about what game you want to make next. And for the Odyssey 2, I would like to "port," and I use the term loosely, "Garfield" from the 2600 to the Odyssey 2. I began work on a simple fence in the Odyssey 2. Some colors are to be changed. The fence is yellow (read: brown), the cat will be black. I would like the dog in there following the cat's movement at the bottom, but he won't do anything except follow the cat. So here's what I'm planning: cat - sprite 0. Dog - sp
So I played some Berzerk on the 2600 last night. I couldn't sleep, so I figured I might as well continue working on the progress I had made earlier yesterday when I started the whole thing. The only reason I played Berzerk is to get the sprites so I could program them into my game. They were 8x10 or so, so I had to cut out a few lines to make it 8x8. I'm guessing here will be the breakdown of the sprites: sprite 0 - man sprite 1 - man's bullet sprites 2-5 robots sprite 6 robot bullet sprite 7
Finally got the keypad working. So with the title screen done, it will probably not magically change any more. To start the game, press 1 on the Kid's controller. Unfortunately, it is impossible to test on a Harmony Cart because the Harmony Cart menu does not work with a keypad controller. Pressing the game select switch just has the cursor flickering between the first and second items.
(Perhaps) the final Bert design. I moved the nose one pixel up.
So anyway, this will be wher
So my computer wasn't working very well. So I decided to reset the thing. It took 4 hours. Right now I am in the middle of downloading the programs I had before. Discord is a mean. I can't log on to it. I guess I lost my Discord capabilities because it locked me out even though I already have an account.
After the four hours (it was 2 a.m.), I discovered I had a new video editing tool that I've never seen before. So I decided to use it. It is pretty tough to get going with this myste
Well, apparently the DS is still going to be with us until at least 2011. So the shovelware continues ("Imagine" series, I'm talking to you. ) Just got my first DS game of 2010 today: Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing. Haven't played it yet, am waiting until tomorrow (in case I have to rant and rave and yell at my DS so mom doesn't have to hear it.) Although there are still a few games for my "must-have" title list I still haven't got. Let's take a look at it, shall we?out: Valkyrie Profiles, Tou
I finally got a green background with a red snake! So what's next? I don't know! I would like the snake to go faster and add a second blue snake for the second player to move around. But for now I'm happy with what I have. I would like to make a full game out of this, but I don't know. I think this is a pretty good start for someone who has no idea of what they're doing. And I bet the snake is happy as well. Slithering around on nice soft grass instead of concrete.
I was saddened that Nintendo Power was going to end. I had subscribed from 1993-2009 or so. Then I was happy because it's not going to end. God damnit, I'm not going to let the magazine die. I'll make my OWN Nintendo Power. So starting Holiday 2012, I will make a bi-monthly magazine devoted to Nintendo, which means I'll have to buy the Wii U and review it. That will be issue 1 (or whatever number they stop at.) Let's just hope the Wii U has New Super Mario Bros. Mii as a launch title, or at leas
I propose that it wasn't that the game.com had a blurry black and white display. Nintendo's Game Boy had one in 1989 and quickly gained success not because of its black-and-white display on a puke green background. No, it became a success because it had lots of great games. Starting with the great game Tetris. (and, to a lesser extent, Super Mario Land). What is the game.com's killer app? That's right. There wasn't one. And there were only 20 games made during the 2 years it failed. Even the Ata
A supplement to the Dutch Prog Rock Page's Long Song List, I'm making a Short Song List. So far I have 113 short ones, but I know there are probably thousands more, so I'm asking your help with making this. Anything less than 30 seconds qualifies.
Also, I'm still anxiously waiting the arrival of Fantasy Zone to complete my Tengen NES black carts collection.
I've decided to continue work on Castle of Doom. I am wondering if I have room for an even 50 levels. And an ending. After all, defeating all those levels you might as well get one. How special it is depends on how much room the rest of the levels take up. Right now I have 35 rooms in there and 1,444 bytes left in bank 2, where rooms 27 and beyond are stored. Levels 1-26 and info are in the first bank, along with the "engine." So I figure if I can fit 26 rooms in a bank, then I SHOULD have room
I just don't get it. Every Sonic game I've ever played is too difficult for me to get very far in. In yesterday's blog, I mentioned I was back to thinking about the N-Gage. So I put Sonic N in. I haven't played every single one, but I'd venture to guess the game is one of if not the most hardest platformer on the whole N-Gage. For a long time I couldn't for the life of me beat 4-2. I'd get as far as the stupid robot boss and then die trying to jump up the ice platforms to try to bump the boss en
Today I added the guy and power ups in the secret government waffle project. Along with a few other minor things. The Rom is now 10.5k. So I have lots of room to add stuff before it gets to 16k. The stuff to add are: + sfx or in-game music + death screen Right now, He-Man is alive and well in my Intellivision. It's playing as background music for me typing this blog now. Have you ever done that? Put in a cartridge and let it play as ambiance? Or, even nerdier, to make it sound like you're in an
I was told people camped out overnight to see this movie. Now, Star Wars I could understand, but a new Spider-Man movie? Anyway, I got the game for GBA and I'll play it this evening (or tomorrow morning) and probably have a review sometime. I was going to make the page red for the GBA 07 site, but that color was taken by Meet The Robinsons. Maroon it is, then. And, I got it at Wal-Mart, out of all places. I went there thinking they weren't gonna have it, but they did, so I don't necessarily have
So I finally worked out a couple problems with my Commodore 64 game and now I can continue. One of the problems was solved fairly easily, while the other took quite a long time. In the end, I figured out what the problem was. And then I figured out how to stop it. That second part was the one I spent the most time on. The problem: The computer was registering a hit at the title screen, forcing it to go back to the title screen when the joystick button was pressed. The solution: Wait until the hi
Geez, collecting DS games is expensive. So i've decided to cut back. The only games I'm going to spend more than $20 on are a.) ones i really want, and b.) super-major releases (like Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars).
Right now, I have 121 in my collection, and i've decided that this month i'm going to beef up my DS library.
Who knows, maybe ten years down the road, i'll start a DS online store and sell most of these. Anyway, my pdf page of my collection as it stands now is at the bottom of th
Well, I finished my song. It's a MIDI that's 15:24 long. It's called "My Butt Hurts part 2", and since it's a MIDI, it's an instrumental. This is a follow-up to my other 15-minute-long MIDI I made about three years ago (almost to the day) called "My Butt Hurts Part 1." Right now I'm all composed-out. Who knows, maybe a year from now I might make My Butt Hurts part 3. All that's left to do to the My Butt Hurts page is add an interesting picture for the song, like I did with part 1. What I did do,
I don't know what to do with the title screen. Nobody is giving feedback, so I don't know which is better. This is the most current one I have, even more so than the one posted in the game's thread. I know file folders aren't normally green, but seeing as how Intellivision can't display brown, I had no choice. There are only 16 (!) colors it CAN display. I wonder who thought that up. And how a console made two years earlier can display 128 colors. INTYColor is giving me all sorts of problems as
I thought I'd try my hand at Atari 2600 assembly again. It took a while to relearn stuff I'd forgotten, but two hours' worth of work got this binary file attached here. The batch file says there are 23 references to unknown symbols and 31 events requiring another pass, but it works. Since I have about 1500 bytes left, I figure I might as well add a song, so I'll do that tomorrow. Think of this as a demo, not a game. Mom is still insistent on taking all her pills to die, so I've decided to hide
...is now the name of the game I'm working on. I think I'll take a short break from programming it (it doesn't have to be completed until September.) Watch me say that, and then add another update tomorrow. In other news, it's supposed to be 104 degrees tomorrow, a rare (thank goodness) occurence here. My eye hurt last night (migraine) and I vomited up some popcorn I ate earlier. I went to sleep and about 3 hours later, I woke up and it was fine. I don't like sleeping. I like to be active and d
Since I did the first one, I got three games for it. Let's take a look at them.
Ms. Pac-Man: Maze Madness - Essentially the same version of the N64. I loved the N64 version and it is one of the few games I actually beat...ever. I was able to write a guide for it which is floating around the files of my website somewhere. Oh, here it is: http://www.atari2600land.com/ms.html Anyway, it also has the original Ms. Pac-Man arcade game too. So basically, it's 2 games in one. Or something.
Looney Tune
So my boxes of Atari 2600 games in the garage were made of cardboard and the bottom ones were beginning to crumble due to the pressure of there being 5 of them stacked up one atop another. So I decided to empty them all out and put them in the bookshelf in the pantry. While unpacking them, I thought to myself, gee I should try one to see if they all still work okay. That one I picked was Video Pinball. I could have picked a rarer one, like Mr. Do's Castle, or Miner 2049er II or Master Builder, b
So I figure with summer over, my sister's kids are back in school again, and I got both new ink cartridges (color and B&W), that I should get my butt in gear and make my Odyssey game now. So what I did is with shiny new ink is print my game board and instructions. They look really groovy. I need to go get the overlays done, which I probably will do soon. I am ready to reveal the name of the game: Six2 is its name. The game uses dice and a game board with 36 squares on it. It uses cartridge #
