The gift of music

Ever since I found that website that converts MIDI files to MP3s, I think I'm going to give my family members a CD of 45 minutes' worth of music I composed for Christmas. So that means basically I'm going to burn 4 copies, one for mom, one for dad, one for my sister and one for myself in case i lose the computers they're stored on right now. The first thing they'll ask when they open it is, "Is this the usual disgusting off-key singing of stupid songs we're used to?" See, I record really disgust

The ghost of celeries past

I'm back working on Celery's Challenge for the Intellivision. I dug my INTV out of my garage and hooked it up, and it still works. I made a 12th level last night and now I've made #13. The 13th one pushed me over the 16k limit. I'm now at 16.5k. And I added a new enemy: Ghost stalks. They're white stalks of celery. They have an unusual trait: They can go through walls. But they are just like vegetarians, on a fixed path, going back and forth. I think I'm going to use the ghosts more since they'r

The genius of the ActionMax.

While many people poo-pooh it and say it sucks, I have come up with a few reasons to like it. #1 - the controls. You point the gun. You shoot it with the trigger. No millions of unreachable buttons and painful-to-use like an Intellivision controller. No millions of buttons like a Jaguar controller. After half an hour of playing an Intellivision II, my thumbs hurt because the fire buttons are square and the edges puncture my skin. And if you don't reach the target in time, you only have yourself

The Garlic Fights Back

I added a little scene to episode 2 of the Celery show. In it, the garlic is watching TV, which is showing the celery's rampage, when suddenly, garlic hears a beep. He goes into the Garlic Central Command and on the control panel screen, Leader Garlic tells the garlic to press the big red button that says on. So he does. What does the big red button do? Don't ask me, even I don't know yet. I just write the thing as I think up ideas for it. I added the Celery Show link back to my signature, and e

the future of Super Giuseppe Bros.

Well, I think I got all the bugs worked out on this game so far, but I don't know if I want to finish this game or not. It's not a matter of whether I want to, it's a matter of can I? Right now the game is about 800 bytes. A couple more hundred bytes and I'll have to use bankswitching. But that's good I suppose since I got all the routines for jumping and falling and running into an enemy good. Now all I have to do is work out some more routines (like smashing a ? block). I don't think I want to

The Fun Machine

So I went to the video game store again. I wasn't thinking about picking up a N64 game. It just happened. Then I thought. I thought about all the fun times I had reviewing games for myself about the N64. I even had one article in the middle school newspaper where I reviewed N64 games. So I was born to do this. Since then I have made about 30 issues of Nintendo Stuff, a magazine I used to write for myself from 1997-2002. I kinda went crazy over how stupid the Gamecube was so I stopped making them

The fumes got me again.

Before I went to bed last night, I had the urge to go get my Jaguar and hook it up. After not playing it for a while, it still works like a charm. I gave up on getting a CD drive for it because the idiots that be decided they must be worth more than $100. So with that in mind, I looked through my collection. Barring R6s and higher, the only thing I'm missing is Sensible Soccer. I am clueless as to why Jaguar stuff shot up in price recently, but I'm glad it decided to now instead of a few years a

The fumes

Well, the fumes got to me again. I dug out my Jaguar and games from the garage. I don't know why since it's covered and all, but since it rained yesterday and today, the cardboard boxes used to store the games have become softer and colder and wetter. Anyway, I found the games, and the controller and put my N64 and 32X away to make room for the Jaguar. I turned it on (Ruiner Pinball was in the cart slot). Hurray, it still works. The thing is, I'm currently bored with the games I have at the mome

The first card.

So I downloaded the website's PSD file. I made it all the sizes it needed to be. Yet the card I designed seems to be larger than what is needed. So I saved the template as a .png file, and it too was larger than it was supposed to be, even though all the sizes I put in the original card were the same as the template file I had downloaded. So I'm trying to figure out how to use Photoshop, I guess. Either that or the company's template is useless. Or I'm just not doing it right. This picture is su

The face of an ant (part 2)

So on New Year's Day I had worked a little on Aaron the Aant getting a face. I had designed a head on sprite that looks at the whole face. But while that was good, what I had wanted was a face that looks left when Aaron was facing left and right when he was facing right. I tried a couple of times to do this, but each time ended up breaking the game. Well, i guess perseverance paid off because I finally got it to do what I had wanted from the beginning. I wanted a face from the very beginning of

The face of an ant

I begin 2015 working on Aaron the Aant. I changed a few things. First off, I changed the title screen. Instead of two sprites saying "THE," it's now a quad. Why did I do this? Because I needed a sprite to make Aaron's face with. Yes, Aaron has a face now. This took at least a few hours of testing, retesting, testing on real hardware, yelling, retesting, etc. I finally got it working on real hardware. So here's a screenshot of version 15a in action. (Version 15 did not have the word "THE" in it.

The F stands for 'fly' (part 2)

Last night I made some progress on Flies. I put a score and timer in. I lowered the title screen fly a little. Right now the timer starts at 99, which is way too high, so I'll lower it to like 20 or something. Nothing happens when you get down to 00, but that will be when the game ends. I tried and tried to get a green border in a certain way, but I had to give up. Then I thought "if I made a whole bunch of sprites next to each other since there's apparently no limit, I could mak

The F stands for 'fly'

Between getting ready to ship boxes of Trimerous out (there are still a few left, btw), I have been working on a new Channel F game. Perhaps a game of "Trimerous 2" is in the making? Anyway, it's a fly swatting game called Flies. Flies to swat at, bombs to avoid, great fun for all. Right now I have a title screen and the beginning of an in game thing working. The lovely title screen. What I WANTED to have happen was have a pretty song play here and then pause the song to animate the f

The Eye of the Rabbit

So I worked on the Celery movie again for about an hour. I gave the alien rabbits eyes. I thought they looked pretty weird without them. I did a little short scene, scene 9. In this scene, Mr. Celery is walking along on Mars when he sees a giant rabbit statue. Mr. Celery jumps. The rabbit statue just sits there being a statue. Mr. Celery jumps twice more, still nothing. So he walks away. Little does Mr. Celery know that that statue is of the Rabbit King, which he'll meet later on in the episode.

The eye has it.

So something made me think about the 2k celery game I had made. I know what it was that made me think of it: I was looking through my GBA games and saw one had been made by 2k Games. (That's what I wanted to name MY thing, but for a totally different reason!) So I looked through it and was determined to put an eye on the celery instead of just a hole. I was able to make a 2-color missile. Eventually. It took many tries to get the missile put in at just the right x position, which was very hard b

The Evolution of Larry (part 2)

How did this game begin? It's time to look back in the history of this game. Someone in 2013 suggested doing a game about Black Friday. Searches turned up nothing about the whereabouts of the thread, but I can tell you that's truth, and why a game called "Larry the Lemon" has the binary file name bf34.bin. I found bf1.bin on my computer and instead of a lemon it has a multicolored sprite of a guy pushing a shopping cart. By bf4.bin, there was a little purple demon troll thingy as well as a prese

The Evolution of Larry

I've done a lot with Larry the Lemon. I snuck a look at the first version to see what it looked like. It didn't even have a title screen. Somehow not only did I manage to put that in, but made it change colors as well. But I didn't do this alone. AtariAge user "bogax" helped me optimize the code a lot and that helped shrink down the size of it. So I'd like to thank him (if he's still here) for that. Without his help, I wouldn't have gotten this to be as good as it looks now. I tested this latest

The ending to Asses of Fire

Apparently people are really liking the T&P game! I put an interest check up and replies aplenty! Unfortunately, I don't really want to take orders quite yet. But anyway, here's the ending to Asses of Fire. I got bored, so I programmed it. All I have to do is merge the code into the game and there will be an ending. Note: After the background fades to black, the title screen will begin. For those of you who don't know, the music is the Canadian national anthem (T&P are Canadian.) Oh, and

the end...label

Trying to design a good end label for the Celery Show. I like this one: Of course, putting "episode 1" on it, one would figure that an episode 2 will happen. It will, but I don't know when. First up though is to finish #1, then I can figure out what the basis for episode 2 is. Perhaps a Rampage-style episode where Mr. Celery goes on a rampage like Godzilla. Anyway, I added a little scene. The thing is 6 minutes long now. So I have 1.5 minutes left to program with 1 unused bank left. And I hav

the end isn't here after all

Well, after going to bed angry at about 3 am, I somehow managed to sleep about 11 hours. Sometimes, I get so angry that i want to die, but this was the first time i've actually posted about it in the forums. I know that most people don't want to die (although i believe there is no such thing as "normal"), so it would come as kind of a shock that someone would want to. In this case, i'm all better now. And although i hate to say bad things about other people, especially on this forum, why is it t

The end is here

Let's just say that Jack has been cancelled, as well as everything else i make in the future, because i suck at bB. GoSub 2 and Alien Greed 3 will be my very last games, as sucky as they are right now, because everything i make is total shit of course. Fuck, ET is better than my games. Pac-Man is like video game gold compared to my shit. Well, once I do look at this game, the more I think MausGames is right and that all my stuff is shit. I won't be making anything any more because no matter what

The End

I've been thinking about the end of the world. And I think this may be it. I never thought it would happen in my lifetime, but apparently it will. Some day soon (before 2020 ends), we'll all be dead. And all because of a stupid little disease. It's been nice living and getting to meet such wonderful people who have the same interests I did. You know, I thought it would happen differently. Like being struck by an asteroid or something. But a little flu-like thing wiping out the entire earth's pop

The earth is not flat...

...or at least we're supposed to think that. All "flat earth conspiracy theories" aside, I thought it would be nice if the earth in the Capt. Bruce game for the 2600 would be rounded. After spending a few more hours of various means of trying different minikernels, nada. Then, it hit me. Why not use player 0 as the curve? I could put it on the right side of the screen and it would go back to the other side and if designed right and put in the right space, it would have the effect I want. But thi

The dumbest time of the year

The stupidest holiday of the year is Monday. That's right, it's Columbus Day here in America. Why is it so stupid? The only people that get it off are the feds, and that means no mail. Other than that, everything is normal. State workers still have to go to work, schools are open, etc. Just no mail. Don't know whether the stock market is open or not, but who cares? Here's the thing that makes me angry about this: If we're making Columbus Day a holiday, why not actually celebrate it? Why not clos

The DS is still alive!

I found at least two more games coming out for the system this fall. I recently bought "Planes" since I thought it was the last, but now there's two more coming by year's end. A game based on the upcoming "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" movie is going to be released in September, and now it looks like Activision will have the dubious honor of releasing the last DS game. SpongeBob SquarePants: Plankton's Robotic Revenge" will be released in late October, just in time for my birthday. While
