For the third year in a row, Susan, Mason, Morgan and myself entered a float in the Yukon Fourth of July kids parade. Technically, the first year we didn't make a float; Mason and his cousins dressed up in patriotic-colored clothes and walked through the parade. It wasn't until after the parade when we saw judges handing out medals that we realized it was actually a contest! After that, Susan and I decided that we would enter a winning float every year from now on.
In 2006, we built the
And no, I don't mean in some poetic, muse sense; I mean I literally lost my voice earlier this week. I started feeling bad on Sunday, felt like crap on Monday, felt like worse crap on Tuesday, and back to "just crap" today. Over the weekend my throat started burning and I thought drinking a lot of water would fix it, but it didn't. I slept a ton yesterday, and am feeling a little better today. Truth be known if it were just an average week I would definitely have stayed home yesterday and probab
For some time at work now I've been running dual monitors and I love it. The extra pixel real estate is like gold. I can't tell you how many times I appreciate it on a daily basis. While doing day to day tasks, I can work on one monitor and keep my e-mail open on the other. When programming, I can write code on one monitor and test things on the other. I love me some dual monitors ... but at home, things haven't gone as well. The first problem at home is, my monitors aren't as nice as the ones I
Well, not me so much as the temperature. According to 9online.com's 7 day forecast the high for today is 104 degrees, followed by highs of 105 for Tuesday and 103 Wednesday. By Friday it's supposed to "get down" to 100. As Matthew Broderick once said, "it's like Africa hot." Yesterday while out driving the thermometer in my truck's rear view mirror read 103 degrees. I've been pushing back my walking times further and further. At 10pm it's still 85 degrees outside right now. I don't know if this
Alexey Tolstokozhev, a Russian spammer who was responsible for over 30% of all viagra, cialis, and penis enlargement spam e-mails, was found shot to death in his in his luxury home near Moscow this week. Tolstokozhev reportedly made more than $2 million dollars this year alone, thanks to spam. Vardan Kushnir, another prolific Russian spammer, was assassinated in 2005.
The spam blocker I currently run has a button that reads, "Kill Spam." I had no idea it would work so well.

Here is a good example of how I clean rooms.
"Boy am I in the mood to clean the garage. I'll just turn on the radio and get started."
"Hey, what's going on here? One speaker doesn't work! That sucks! Hey ... I think I have some smaller speakers I bet I could wire up to my old boombox. I think I'll do that."
(Rob finds a spare set of speakers in the garage and some wire in his toolbox and wires everything up. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound very good.)
"Hmmm. I guess the
Monday morning while scouring the dark corners of the Internet I happened across a cache of e-books available for download. Since I had just previously announced to the world that one of my resolutions this year was to read more books, I thought, well gosh, this'll work out great! So, I downloaded them all. I mean, let's face it -- who knows how long these things will remain online? Might as well grab them all now and decide which ones I want to keep later. And so, with a couple of mouse clicks,
While we're not seriously looking yet, Susan and I enjoy looking at open houses and dreaming. Unfortunately, I don't know that we will ever find a house that suits us perfectly. The biggest problem is my stupid hobbies; between Star Wars collections, arcade cabinets, videogames, computers, and tons of other junk, I don't know that we will ever find a house (short of an abandoned Wal-Mart) that could hold it all.
Today however, we came close. While out driving this afternoon we ran across an
I saw a package of these in Vegas last summer, but they were around $25 and I didn't think they were worth that. I ran across the same package for $15 (including shipping) last week on eBay, and decided to pick them up. Basically, they are as advertised -- horrified, B-movie victim action figures. "We provide the screaming hordes, you provide the monster!", says the packaging. I had a good time arranging them today on my desk, fleeing from random things that live in and around my work area.
I went in with four co-workers this year and split a season's worth of Hornet's tickets five ways. To get my out-of-state readers back up to speed, due to a little tropical storm named "Hurricane Katrina" the NBA New Orleans Hornets temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City. The Hornets love being in Oklahoma City -- financially, the franchise is doing much better here than back in NOLA. And likewise, Oklahoma City loves having the Hornets -- last year alone, we sold out the Ford Center 24 times! U
We (the O'Hara Clan) arrived home Friday evening after a week-long vacation of visiting family in Chicago. Although the 800+ mile drive was long, the kids were great. Although Mason still doesn't have a firm grasp of time yet, he understood it well enough to ask, "how many hours are left," a few dozen times Friday.
Mason and his grandpa's 32 train ride from Oklahoma City to Chicago went well. The connecting train from Ft. Worth to Chicago was over five hours late, but things worked out. Dad
I got back from Defcon yesterday (1,100 miles, each way) and quickly made the transition back to work today. The week of sleep deprivation caught up with me; I shuffled my way through work today and am getting ready for bed right now, shortly before 10pm.
I can and will post a complete summary of Defcon in the very near future, but until then I would like to tell you one major observation/revelation I had during this past weekend. During the convention I realized that a very small percentage
Birthdays were a big deal for my sister and I as kids. Every year we invited lots and lots of people over, had cake and ice cream, played lots of games, and did lots of other things. Our birthdays were celebrated with as much gusto as any holiday. We had overnight camping birthday parties in my backyard, and roller skating parties at the local skating rink. All the parties started out at our house, and each year my parents would put on our Captain Zoom birthday records. Each one was personalized
NEW YORK - The NFL is looking into claims a New England Patriots employee was videotaping signals by Jets coaches on New York’s sideline during the season opener. The investigation was first reported by ESPN.com, which said that NFL security confiscated a video camera and tape from a Patriots employee during New England’s 38-14 victory Sunday. The employee was accused of aiming his camera at the Jets’ defensive coaches, who were sending signals out to the players, sources told the Web site. “The
Yesterday (Friday) was my friend Andy's mom's 60th birthday. He and the rest of the family organized a surprise birthday party for her after work. Before the party, Susan and I were scrambling to get both ourselves and the kids ready to go. While Susan was getting Morgan dressed, I was putting my shoes on when all of a sudden I realized Mason was being a little too quiet. I called out his name, and when he came walking around the corner I realized why he was being so quiet -- he was concentratin
Saturday evening, Mason, Morgan, Susan and I went to "Haunt the Zoo." It's one of those "safe" alternatives to trick-or-treating your own neighborhood, which is kind of silly considering we plan on trick-or-treating our neighborhood as well. Think of it as a dry run.
We arrived at the zoo just before dark and noticed that several thousand other people decided to haunt the zoo Saturday evening as well. While parking, I overheard the parking attendant report back that there were "five parking
It seems our battle with the creeping crud still isn't over. Mason was lethargic and cranky all day New Year's Eve. Susan's had the worst of it; she's really feeling awful (I suspect sinus infection at this point, and trust me I would know). Mason had a sleep over at a friend's house, so it was just Susan, Morgan and me until Susan's sister and two of her three kids came over. Susan cooked a big pot of chili and made cheese dip and we ate a bunch of cookies and junk ... boy is the diet in sad sh
It is 11:30pm, Halloween Night, and I am writing to you from my desk at work. No, I haven't been here all evening. After the kids went to bed I hopped on my laptop and managed to destroy my e-mail directory. I am up at work trying to recover files from my last backup. We'll see how things go.
Tonight's trick-or-treating wrapped up a week-long Halloween celebration that began last weekend. Last Saturday, Susan and the kids attended the Yukon Community Center's Halloween festival. Monday night
Happy bomb drill day, everybody!
Maybe I wasn't clear enough in my entry yesterday about the heat. It's hot. I mean, HOT. The thermometer on my truck yesterday on the way home read 113 degrees! That is not a typo -- 113 degrees!!! Last night at 10pm it was 90 degrees -- this morning at 6am, it was 85.
Today, someone at work decided it would be a good day for a bomb threat drill. Maybe they were delirious from the heat or something. Don't get me wrong -- I am certainly all for safety procedu
My old lady got a little older today. Happy 35th birthday, honey!
Morgan turns 3 this Saturday, but her party's Sunday. Morgan's having a Princesses and Pirates birthday party. Everyone (including, unfortunately, mommy and daddy) are dressing up for the shindig.
Morgan has requested a "doll" cake. So far we've taken two stabs at it. The cakes are coming out okay but the dress designs leave something to be desired. On the left is the one Susan did last week; one the right is the one I di
Yesterday, Mason officially turned seven-years-old. I had pseudo-planned to take Mason out for breakfast Friday morning, but that got cancelled as I woke up sick. It hit me Thursday night, right around dinner time. My stomach was feeling funny which I misinterpreted as being hungry. After eating, it didn't go away. In fact, it got worse. I went to bed early Thursday night but woke up around midnight and tossed and turned in bed (in between trips to the bathroom) and didn't fall back asleep until
Five years ago today, at this very minute, Susan and I were camped out at the hospital awaiting the arrival of our first child. To the hospital, Susan brought her favorite pajamas and pillow. I brought a duffle bag filled with clothes, a second bag filled with snack food, my laptop, 200 DVD movies, CDs, my Gameboy, and various other odds and ends -- none of which got any use that day (except of course, the laptop -- I had pictures of Mason online five minutes after his birth). It's funny that I
I hope everybody had a safe and enjoyable New Year's Eve!
Both Jeff and Andy and their families stopped by the house to helped us bring in the new year. There were lots of snacks and fun and (or course) games. Click on the picture of Sawyer Willrath below to see more pictures from New Year's Eve.
I love bad horror movies but I rarely have (or make) the time to watch them. I've been talking about throwing my own personal Halloween movie fest for a couple of years now, but for some reason never got around to it. Well, this year I'm doing it. For the entire month of October I plan on watching and reviewing a different horror movie each and every night. Halloweenfest 2008 kicked off last night with 1986's classic Heavy Metal thriller, Trick or Treat.
Don't worry, those of you who subscr
