State of the Union

Mason and Morgan both had friends sleepovers last night, so the four of us spent most of Sunday lounging around the house, catching up on sleep. Mason and Talon worked on their Star Wars movie; Morgan and Madison slept in a tent and watched Disney movies.   I rented the 2008 version of Journey to the Center of the Earth for Mason and I to watch tonight but somehow I ended up with the 2008 made-for-tv version of Journey to the Center of the Earth, starring Rick Schroeder. An hour into the film

Johnny and the Cable

A couple of weeks ago, we (the external user provisioning team) needed a projector for our meeting, which we borrowed from PC Service here at work. Along with the projector came three or four different video cables -- VGA to VGA, s-video to VGA, and so on.   Later in the day, one of our friends (Paula) came over and said, "what the heck is this cable?" I am usually pretty good at this game. I've been around computers for so long that I can usually recognize even the most obscure cable ... but

Respect my Authori-tay!

Two weeks ago, I began Private Investigator Training class at Canadian County Technology Center (formerly Canadian County Vo-Tech). I signed up because the class sounded interesting -- nothing more. The class is two evenings a week for the next several months. I had trouble decidiing between the PI class and the Cake Decorating class, however in the end, my desire to eat a cake once a week lost to my desire to taser someone.   Private Investigator Training is actually a "Phase 3" class. What

Christmas Story -- A Happy Ending

You may recall from this previous post that we (mostly the kids, with a little help from mom and dad) decorated the front lawn in a Candyland theme in hopes of winning our neighborhood's first annual Christmas Decorating Contest. The kids helped with every aspect of the decorating. Judgement day came and went and ... we heard nothing. After several days, we still heard nothing. I guess I didn't expect them to contact everybody in the neighborhood with a note daying, "Sorry, you didn't win!" but

Man Down

Tuesday morning around 9am I decided to go for a quick walk and get away from my desk for a few minutes. I grabbed my MP3 player and headphones and walked a mile lap around the center.   Rounding the final corner on my way back to my building I was almost run down by one of our security trucks, lights-a-flashin’. That truck was followed by a smaller security kart, with two more security peoples inside. As I approached the building’s front door the trio, walking briskly, walked up behind me. I

I’ve waited 25 Years for this.

I’ve wanted one for 25 years, and now I have one.   A Mohawk.     (Wow, this is going to take some explaining.)   I should start by saying that to me, hair is just, uh, hair. You wash it, you comb it, you cut it, repeat. I have particularly thick hair that grows rapidly. I’ve never had a bad haircut for more than a week or two; it simply grows out too quickly.   Throughout my life I’ve had many notable “hair adventures”. There was the time Susan and I dyed it blue in honor of Best Buy

Spiders

There's something about spiders that makes them appear smaller in pictures than appear in real life. Did you ever notice that? Multiple times I've seen spiders and thought, "man, that's really big!" Then you take a picture of it and in the picture it looks really tiny. Maybe there's something about our brains that makes them seem bigger to us than they really are. Is there a scientific reason for this? I was thinking, maybe in real life our brains fill in the gaps between the spider's legs and m

The Truth About Online Advertising

When I launched review-o-matic.com last July, I thought adding ads to my site might be a nice source of income on the side. Since the site is all about reviews, I decided to include ads to the following three services: Google, Netflix, and Amazon. The way the ads work is pretty simple. For Netflix, if people sign up by clicking on a link from your page, you get five or six bucks. For Amazon, you get a percentage kickback for any purchases made through links from your site. Google is simply a pay

Puke City

Thursday night, Susan and I awoke to the sound of Morgan puking over the baby monitor's speaker. By the time we got to her room, her crib (and hair) was covered in it. That was the beginning of one long night. After giving her a bath, I held her in my chair while Mommy changed her bedding. And then, of course ... more puke, all over Daddy. Long night, indeed.   Friday night was Mason and Mommy's turn. Mason started with the puking around nine in the evening. Susan waited until after midnight t

Halloweend

Halloween night was fun. Linda came over and brought "Yoda" with her. Susan deemed it too cold for Morgan to trick-or-treat, so Linda and I along with Yoda and Spider-Man sat out on our quest for candy. Mom came over to see the kids and barely caught us before we left our street. Mason already had a ton of candy from trick-or-treating both the zoo and the FAA; now he has two tons. Susan's sister and mom came over at different times to hang out with the kids for a bit. After trick-or-treating was

D64 Disk Conversions

One of my goals for 2008 is to finish all of the analog-to-digital conversion projects I started in 2007. This includes converting all our VHS tapes to DVDs, and all of our old CDs, cassette tapes and records to MP3. Another one of the projects, which has proved to be both the most rewarding and the most frustrating, is the conversion of all my old Commodore 64 diskettes to D64 images.   Just to get everybody up to speed ... on one hand, in the real world, you have real Commodore 64 computers

$2,994 to go.

The first time I went to Riverwind Casino, I lost $100. However, Riverwind Casino offers free soft drinks. As I was sipping on my free Diet Coke, I thought to myself, "well, this is worth a dollar." So in my mind, I decided I had only really lost $99, figuring in the value of my free drink.   The class I am attending this week also offers free drinks in the classroom. As I popped open my first one I leaned over to Johnny and asked him how much this class cost. "About $3,000," he said. As the c

PiVo's Last Legs

Many of you may recall my posts from earlier this year about the media PC I built that the fam and I have dubbed "PiVo" -- short for "PC-based TiVo". PiVo is actually a computer running Windows XP and the free GB-PVR software. Combined with a TV capture card and a video out connection, the computer (which is controlled with an ordinary looking television remote) allows us to record television programs to the computer's hard drive, save them, and play them back at a later date. The GB-PVR softwar

SNAFU

While trying something stupid on my laptop yesterday it seems I completely destroyed it. I'm working on restoring the data right now (I have a backup ... sort of), but until then I won't have access to e-mail (or a lot of other stuff). Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion of this adventure.

Star Wars Weekend

The weekend before last, Susan's mom informed me that there were would be some Star Wars items up for sale at Danny's Friday Night Auction. Stephen and I attended the auction, and I came home with a pretty decent haul.     Here are the action figures I got. I paid on average about four bucks each -- not a great deal, but they were there. The only one I really wanted was the classic figure at the bottom of the picture. The other thing I really wanted was this:     The Death Star, comple

Early Anniversary Night Out

Susan surprised me yesterday with a night out on the town to celebrate our anniversary. As of next Tuesday Susan and I will have been married for thirteen years, but since I'll be out of town in Kansas City, Missouri for work next week, Susan decided to plan something special the weekend before.   After dropping Mason and Morgan off at Granny's, our first stop was the Skirvin Plaza hotel in downtown OKC. The Skirvin is super fancy; it originally opened in 1911 (just four years after Oklahoma

The Last Leg

On day four of our trip, we headed into Galveston -- which is funny, as I have been referring to this entire trip as the Galveston Trip. Turns out we've been 70 miles southwest of Galveston. My apologies to any would-be assassins who have been wandering around Galveston looking for me.   There comes a point in every vacation where you realize you've had enough. For us, that time was approximately 7:04am, Thursday morning. Our original plan involved getting up Thursday morning, driving 70 miles

Refrigerator Maintenance

This morning at work we discovered our old refrigerator was in dire need of a defrosting. So much ice had built up in the freezer section of the mini-fridge that it wouldn’t hold a single frozen meal. In lieu of the more patient method of unplugging the fridge and letting it defrost on its own, I decided to hammer on the chunk of ice with the first thing available: an old hard drive.   The corner of the hard drive was very sharp and managed to break off a significant chunk of ice. Unfortunatel

The Tooth Fairy Visits

About a week ago, Mason informed us that one of his front teeth was wiggly. He's been bending it back and forth, making anyone who's watching cringe. Last night, with a little encouragement, he played with the thing until it eventually popped right out.     Mason was visited by the Tooth Fairy last night and said he plans on spending his dollar at either the Dollar Store or Dollar Tree, "whichever has better toys."

Father's Day

I had several people ask me what I got for Father's Day. While I did get a few things (including a neat digital photo keychain and two tickets for an upcoming Weird Al concert), what I really got was two kids who wanted to hang out with their dad, and a dad who wanted to hang out with me. Everything else was just icing on the cake.   Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there. I hope you were able to spend time with your sons/dads yesterday.

Hornets Cannot Work Magic

I went in with four co-workers this year and split a season's worth of Hornet's tickets five ways. To get my out-of-state readers back up to speed, due to a little tropical storm named "Hurricane Katrina" the NBA New Orleans Hornets temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City. The Hornets love being in Oklahoma City -- financially, the franchise is doing much better here than back in NOLA. And likewise, Oklahoma City loves having the Hornets -- last year alone, we sold out the Ford Center 24 times! U

Zoo Trip, Strike 3

Earlier this month, our kids' daycare scheduled a field trip to the Oklahoma City Zoo. The trip got postponed due to rain. Two weeks ago (on the rescheduled date) the trip was again postponed due to rain. I don't know if you realize this, but it's June. In Oklahoma. Last year we had week long stretches of triple-digit temperatures. Today, we broke a record for the most days in a row for precipitation -- 16 days. The previous record was 14 days, set back in 1937.   This morning (with rain pouri

Near Miss

If I take the back way home from work, there's one intersection that scares me to death. It's a two way stop where the crossroad is a four-lane highway. Cars speed by at 60mph as people behind you honk impatiently for you to zip across. It's a wonder no one's been killed at that intersection yet. Yesterday, I almost was.   To make a long story short, a small, gray Honda was hidden behind a large red truck. I saw the truck coming and gunned it, only to notice the gray car hidden behind it secon

I Can See For Miles and Miles ...

For some time at work now I've been running dual monitors and I love it. The extra pixel real estate is like gold. I can't tell you how many times I appreciate it on a daily basis. While doing day to day tasks, I can work on one monitor and keep my e-mail open on the other. When programming, I can write code on one monitor and test things on the other. I love me some dual monitors ... but at home, things haven't gone as well. The first problem at home is, my monitors aren't as nice as the ones I

Big Fights, Big Rollers

Saturday night, Andy and I cruised over to Buffalo Wild Wings to eat some wings, drink some beer, and watch the Ultimate Fighting Championship Pay Per View for free. Watching fights like these are completely different when you're in a public venue. Buffalo Wild Wings was jam packed with excitement and testosterone. Despite the 30-minute wait outside the restaurant to get a table, we had a blast watching all six fights, which were being broadcast on over a dozen televisions and three giant projec
