My last post was made over 3 months ago. Part of that was because in July, I went into the hospital and had open-heart surgery. I'm still recovering from that but will try to get back to this blog on at least a semi-regular basis. These days, I seem to be concentrating on two systems, one console (Nintendo GameCube) and one portable (Nintendo DS). I may pull out my Xbox system soon so I have two consoles hooked up...I gave away all my PS2 games except for one so that's not really one I'll be
I found myself in Wal-Mart today (Roger! What are YOU doing here?) and decided to glance at their DS section. I found several games there that I hadn't seen there the last time I visited and that included one game I've been planning to buy, Planet Puzzle League. Since it was there, and I was buying a few other things anyway, I decided to go ahead and pick it up today so I was wrong about "Brothers In Arms" being my next DS game. I've glanced at reviews for Planet Puzzle League and they've al
While I've been concentrating on getting GameCube games lately, I do pick up the odd Nintendo DS game and I got my latest one yesterday, my 15th game for Nintendo's 2-screen portable. This game is The New York Times Crosswords and is from Majesco, a company that (until now) I usually associated with doing re-issues of games. I've had a few short sessions with this game so far and I actually rather like it. It's a simple game and has some nice laid-back music and a couple of ways to play the g
Below I will basically be reprinting what I previously wrote about my first ten DS games...plus I'll be adding four titles which I have bought since then. I guess 14 titles isn't a big collection but I'm not going for a complete collection...
1. Animal Crossing: Wild World is the sequal to the GameCube hit. I don't love it as much as I did the original. Maybe I'm just tired of the whole thing.
2. Konami Classics Series: Arcade Hits is another version of Konami's Arcade Classics (which came
Since my last entry, I've received two more games. One is TimeSplitters: Future Perfect which is the 3rd game of that series. This is the second entry to make the GameCube...I have TimeSplitters II on the Cube but the first game, TimeSplitters, only came out on the PS2, I think. I remember in TimeSplitters II (which is an FPS game) that you never saw your character's hands...your weapon (especially if it was a handgun) just seemed to float out there in midair. I wonder if they did anything a
A month or so ago, I ordered Peter Jackson's King Kong for the GameCube. The seller had apparently put their listing in the wrong section as the game I received was the Xbox version of that game. I was told I could return it for a refund but I opted to keep it and pass it along to a friend. Last week, I again ordered this game for the GameCube. And today the order was cancelled. This is probably a case of the seller thinking he had the game but turned out he was mistaken. So now I've decid
After a few really horrible games, the Pittsburgh Pirates looked like they were dead in the water to me...then they started winning again and have now won 4 in a row. Their most recent win, yesterday, evened their record at 10-10 so if they can beat the Reds tonight, they can again have a winning record for the first time in a couple of weeks.
A couple years ago, I had a project where I put money into a special bank account based on what the Pirates did (so much for a win, a homer, runs sco
I received two video games yesterday...
Battalion Wars for the GameCube
Peter Jackson's King Kong for the Xbox
These were bought via Amazon.com's Marketplace program. Unfortunately, I was supposed to get a GameCube version of King Kong. I e-mailed the seller who says he basically screwed up...he was selling his son's copy and he accidentally put it in the GameCube section instead of the Xbox one and he doesn't have a GC copy. While I'm trying to concentrate on GameCube purchases thes
The Pirates win the World Series! Okay, not really...just in a video game I have.
Baseball Advance for the GBA was a game I heard good things about so I managed to get a copy about a year or so ago. I do like the game...it has an interesting way to bat. You hold a button in and release it when you want to swing the bat. There's a round target you can move around and try to place it where the ball's coming to make contact when you swing. The better the hitter, the larger this blue target
Midway Arcade Treasures
System: GameCube
Publisher: Midway
Rating: T (Teen)
Memory Requirement: 4 blocks
As with my first review, this is a collection of arcade games. Midway gave us 3 volumes of this series...Volume 2 had 21 games, I think, and they got theme-oriented with the third series which was all racing games. This series contains adaptations of no less than 24 games that were originally games for video arcades. They include:
Spy Hunter, Defender, Defender II, Gauntlet,
My main credit card is an Amazon.com Visa...the nice thing about that is that, as my rewards program, I tend to get a $25 gift certificate now and then towards Amazon.com purchases. One arrived in today's mail and I used it to order a copy of the GameCube version of Call to Duty 2: Big Red One.
In other gaming news for me, I'm trying something that will likely result in my buying fewer video games. I call it my Pittsburgh Pirates Video Game Project. Other than special occasions like the
I'm starting a little project in which I'm going to play each of my GameCube games one by one and do a review of each. I'm no professional reviewer, of course, so this is just for fun. I may go through long stretches where I do a review every day...then I may slow down from time to time. Some games I've played a lot, some not so much...or not at all. I have been buying a lot of games lately so many will indeed be completely new to me. At first I was going to do it strictly alphabetically bu
Last year I had given myself a limit...no more than 20 game purchases during the year. For this year, I decided to forget about any limits. And it's a good thing...I've already gotten 52 games this year and still have 4 on their way. Here is a list of what I've received so far this year:
1. Go! Go! Hypergrind (GameCube, Jan. 5)
2. Red Faction 2 (GC, Jan. 5)
3. Dark Summit (GC, Jan. 5) Free game
4. Avalanche 1080 (GC, Jan. 6)
5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GC, Jan
Yesterday I received my 10th game for my Nintendo DS. Considering I bought my unit back in 2005, I haven't exactly been splurging on the system but I've been buying more in the last half-year or so and will probably continue to purchase games off and on (I do have one more on order right now). Here's what I have so far in alphabetical order...
1. Animal Crossing: Wild World is the sequal to the GameCube hit. I don't love it as much as I did the original. Maybe I'm just tired of the whole
I've been saying (here and elsewhere) that I was going to stop buying games for my GameCube library once I'd reached an even 100 games which seemed like a nice round number. Well, I've decided to change my mind about that...there are just too many games I'm interested in that I'd still like to have. So, as l ong as I can find games that still interest me, I'll keep buying them. Interestingly, I've not bought much in the way of Xbox games lately and that's what I mostly was buying last year.
The website IGN.com has picked the 25 best games ever this week for the GameCube, PS2 and Xbox as well as the GBA. They figure that they've all been supplanted by new hardware and this is the year they'll gasp their last for the most part so they may as well celebrate them by picking (in their opinion) what are the best games for each system.
GameCube--I was surprised to see that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess wasn't even considered since they consider it to be primarily a Wiii titl
Earlier this week, I received the following 3 games for my Nintendo GameCube...
All-Star Baseball 2003
MLB SlugFest 20-04
True Crime: New York City
After getting these, I checked a website where I've been keeping a list of my GC games...and I was surprised. I was pretty sure that, including these and one other game I still have on order, that my list of games would be at 101. Instead, it was at 99. I've been planning on stopping my GameCube purchases once I reached 100 games. I tho
Three of the games I mentioned were coming came in today...
Madden NFL 07 is the final edition of Madden that will be available for the Cube so it was fitting I go ahead and get it now. Glancing at the instruction manual, the controls seem rather complicated. I wonder if there's a seminar I can take to learn this game? I also need a large memory card for it...this game requires 173 blocks to save games.
Wario World is a game that can be hard to find at a decent price sometimes. I man
I think I got a few GameCube titles since my last entry. Here is a current update. I have the following games on order...
Madden NFL 07--This game was ordered close to 2 weeks ago so it should be arriving anytime now...maybe today. If not today, next week for sure.
Radio Allergy--One of the last GC games to be released, this is currently scheduled to be out on March 20.
Wario World--For some reason, this is very expensive, at least from Amazon.com Marktplace sellers. New copies are sta
I got 3 GC games today...
Alien Hominid
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Zoocube
Thus, though it was only 3 titles, I got games from A to Z today. Then I added one more to my order list as I found a less than $30 copy of the first Donkey Konga so I will now be getting that...probably sometime next week. I'm not sure I'll get Donkey Konga 2. Maybe if I find it at the right price...
Just when I start to think I've gotten just about all the GameCube games I think will interest me, I find more. I'd ordered two games recently and ordered 5 more today which now gives me 5 GameCube games on order, pretty much all of them at discount prices...
Radio Allergy--Will this game really come out? We shall see.
Chibi Robo--It sounds kind of interesting...I just hope I enjoy it.
Alien Hominid--I've heard of this several times but have never played it.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat--I'm
With spring just a few months away, my thoughts turn to baseball. Who will contend this year? Will my lowly Pittsburgh Pirates get off to a better start and actually have a decent season? And, perhaps most important of all, which baseball video game should I buy?
For a few years, there was no real decision...MVP Baseball was easily my favorite baseball game and I've actually just started another season (I even created myself as a single-A player but had to shorten my name to Schoolcra a
I just recently finished yet another season of MVP Baseball 2005 in which my Pittsburgh Pirates beat the New York Yankees to win the World Series...only in video game land, huh? I like this game but the 2005 edition was the last one due to another company getting the exclusive rights to use the MLB licenses. I don't know if there will be a decent baseball game this year (last year's one main game, Major League Baseball 2K6 wasn't particularly inspiring) so I may just play another season of MVP
I received another GameCube title today, SSX On Tour, a snowboarding title. This version features Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach as playable characters. It makes me wonder if there is any sport Mario can't play...I also have him in games where he plays golf, tennis, kart racing and baseball. Also, I don't have it yet but there's also one where he plays soccer. What is left for him to conquer? Football, perhaps? I do recall there is a portable basketball game he's in. Of course, if he can
CMT Presents Karaoke Revolution Country is the one game disc I received this week so far. I've heard of these Karaoke Revolution games but have never tried one. I like country music, though, and figured this is probably the one time a country music game will be available. I'll probably be lousy at it, though...since I'm a lousy singer.
I also received one of those joystick games...well, in this case, it's a paddle game. It's a collection of 13 games in a 2-player paddle collection in the
