Playing Starflight (Genesis)

Hi there!   As requested by Bob, I'm playing the Genesis version of Starflight:   So, is it an RPG? I'm not sure. That's what they considered it in my "Happy Computer" mags back in the day. I think it's something like "Pirates! in Space", spiced up with a scavenger hunt. Of course, when it came out in 1986, Pirates! didn't even exist   Lemon64 has it sorted into "Simulation, Space" - when it was my descission I'd have it put under "Adventure, Miscellaneous"   At first I was unsure wh

Playing Galivan (NES)

Hi there!   What an exciting surprise!     This is a game I played before on the C64. IIRC it came with some compilation I actually bought because it had Arkanoid on it. Total stinker, look it up in Lemon64: http://www.lemon64.com/games/details.php?ID=1014   More or less accidently I decided to at least give the NES version a try, since I already knew how bad the C64 version was.   And now this version appears to be a brilliant game! Yay!   I only played the first "area" so far, bu

Playing 1942 (NES)

Hi there!   So after half a dozen C64 titles in a row, I finally play 1942 on the NES again:     I wonder if this mother of generic vertical scrolling shmups was eventually considered groundbreaking back in its day in the arcade?   There's almost nothing regarding gameplay. Shoot anything that moves. Well, there's two power ups, that are a bigger shot and satellite planes, but that's it already. In the end you're just shooting some 10.000 planes of a handfull of different types, that d

Playing Starglider (C64)

Hi there!   Instead of scrolling shmupping I do it in 3D now, with Starglider:   Now, why on earth would someone want to play the C64 version? Well, several reasons. Of course I was curious how this one would like on the C64. Next I figured the Amiga version was to be played with a mouse and forced to choose I'll always go with a Joystick   So, isn't the C64 version dead slow? Honest answer, yes it is slow. Easy to cure though in this case, I'm just running VICE on 200%   Well, gamep

Playing Ninja (C64)

Hi there!   Wow, that was a short one!!     I assume that writing this entry will take longer than it took beating this game, hehe   Ninja is basically a low budget version of Fist II. Funny enough that it was released the same month. Still, it did pretty good actually. It has less screens than the original, but that also meant a lot less wandering through empty screens.   The mission is simpler, you just have to collect 7 "idols". The battles are also easier, so I managed to beat it

Playing Fist II (C64)

Hi there!   So, now that my wife and me have beaten Pokemon Snap on the VC, I can go on here...   As usual plans have changed, so instead of Paperboy, here comes Fist II:     Why no Paperboy? Well, I really tried getting into it, but no matter which version I tried (NES/SMS/GEN), I couldn't force myself into playing it, no matter how much I was trying. The best one seemed to be the Genesis one, but it still sucked.   Next in line was "Fist II - The Legend Continues", so the full titl

Plans for 2008

Hi there!   So this is going to be the sequel entry to *drumrolls* my "Plans for 2007" blog entry!   More or less a lose ToDo list I may follow more or less close. (Actually I got pretty close with my list for 2007 )   In 2008 I want to:   - Start / Work on some 2600 programming projects. We'll see what is grabbing my attention. There's always a couple of older ones I may ressurect, like for example Gateway to Apshai, Tron or Jumpman. And there's always a couple of shiny objects on the

Playing Druid (C64)

Hi there!   Unlike most other games I was "Playing..." so far, Druid isn't completely new to me:   I've played it a couple of times before. It is an intelligent Gauntlet type of game, with a couple of new ideas in the mix. So is your Druid armed with three elementary power shots: Fire, Water and Flash. These do different damage, depending on the enemy type you're shooting, i.e. you don't want to use water against the skeletons for example, since fire is three times more effective.   You

Playing Labyrinth (C64)

Hi there!   TADA:   Yup, that's David Bowie himself on a C64 screen!   Oh how I loved the movie! Ok, I was 12 when I saw it in the cinema. It was definitely a lot better than "Howard the Duck" and "Big Trouble in Little China" which I also saw around that time. And I was sooo into Bowie at the time, I probably would've liked any movie with him. In fact   I've seen Labyrinth about 20 times since, I was playing the Underground 7" each morning before I left for school for a whole 2 ye

Les Rita Mitsouko Mourning

Hi there!   It's always sad to lose something forever. It especially saddens me when someone who created music I love is gone forever. I remember I was crying when Freddie Mercury died.   Shocking news of the day is that one half of the duo "Les Rita Mitsouko", Fred Chichin died age 53 from cancer   At least his music will last. Some great LRM moments:   C'est Comme Ça Don't Forget The Night Andy   Greetings, Manuel

Colony 7: Birth of a Label

Hi there!   Since I always like Nathans features regarding certain labels he created, I thought to once present such a "making of..." from a programmers point of view as well. So with Daves permission I can here show the way from a small scribble to the final Colony 7 label. And there's even a picture riddle coming in the end!   DISCLAIMER: Dave created this label in the highest possible resolution, using like a million dpi and more shades of color than the human eye can resolve. Colony 7: Service Release

Hi there!   So, this one is mostly addressing all known bugs!   Only new feature is the color coding of the score, which is now telling you which colony you are defending:   Green for Ant Colony Yellow for Moonbase Alpha 1 Red for Colony 7   Bugs fixed: - Enemies will now stay within their boundries again. - The Scout won't be spawned in level 1 - Enemies will only fire in the bottom half of the screen, to prevent sudden death almost completely   Uihjah... down to 5 bytes in the

Colony 7: Let's go Crazy

Hi there!   We're all excited, but we don't know why Maybe it's cuz we're all gonna die   Uhm... where was I...   Ah, ok. Posting a new C7 version   So, this version finally has the title music looped properly!   Some other minor stuff includes tweaks to the enemy movement schemes, which I tried modeling more like the arcade. Well, far from perfect, I think it's really an improvement. Now they will try to circle around the screen, strafing some when being near the bottom.   Wou

Colony 7: New Title Screen

Hi there!   Inspired by the recent work on the Juno First title screen did I rework mine some as well. I never liked the totally assymetrical look of my score infos and they were also using way too much space. So the idea was to do something similar than the recent JF trickery. Only instead of two dots, I rather wanted a fifth sprite to work with, which unfortunately requires an impossible timing   I managed doing it anyway though, (with an evil trick ):   Greetings, Manuel

Playing Heartland (C64)

Hi there!   To get that out of the way first, it's pretty obvious, that this is no text adventure:     After trying 2-3 hours to get into "Leather Goddesses of Phobos" yesterday, I established a new rule for "Playing...": No text adventures!   That's admittedly the easy way out, but this here is also mostly supposed to entertain me. Playing a text adventure is for me kinda like reading a book in a foreign language, from a genre I don't like. Also, I just hate reading longer texts on mo

Playing W.A.R (C64)

Hi there!   I bet everyone here can immediately guess what kind of clone this sucker is:     YEP! Uridium!   Still, all cloning aside, it took me a very long time to figure this one out today. In fact I even needed consulting the manual, which can't be a good sign for a shoot'em up, no?   Here's how I did so far:   The first level felt surprisingly easy. I just went strafing the decks up and down and I quickly figured that if you go completely up or down, your ship will flip 'behin

Playing Tass Times in Tone Town (C64)

Hi there!   To sum this one up, I'm glad it's all over!   TTiTT is an early Interplay effort, when they did a series of adventures for Activision. This one was already the 4th and also the last, with Interplay focusing more on RPGs from then onwards, most likely driven by the success of The Bard's Tale.     As you can see, after Univited this is another point & click interfaced game, again a good year before Maniac Mansion. Doing some mythbusting here. Even Lucasarts themselves did

Playing Wizard's Crown (A8)

Hi there!   Maybe it's time to explain the plan I have for "Playing..." some. The basic idea is simply to play all interesting looking games that got reviewed in the German "Happy Computer" and "Power Play" mags, starting from HC issue 11/86...   So, after Uninvited, the next interesting game would've been Alleykat. I already beat it not too long ago though, and also already wrote an article about it in the Graftgold series. I'll be "Playing..." another vertical-shmup soon though, maybe "T

Playing Uninvited (NES)

Hi there!   So, once again I started this adventure. I tried playing the game several times before, but I usually got stuck within an hour or two and gave up. Maybe this time I will do better   I chose playing the NES version. The C64 one has horrible GFX and the Amiga version with all it's windows looks more like 'work' than 'game'   The NES version also has NESy background muzak on every screen and instead of the free-arangement iconized inventory it has easier to handle lists.   My

Grand Monster Slam

Hi there!   Move over Penguin Kun Wars, here comes:   Grand Monster Slam (1989):     Programmer: Rolf Lakämper Graphics: Hartwig Nieder-Gassel Musician: Chris Hülsbeck   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: 71% LemonAmiga Rating: 7.39   Now, this one is special in many ways. First thing you'll notice is that I'm actually writing about a sports game! Yup, I really do like this one. I guess it's because it's not based on any real life sport, but a fantasy sport, so my mind is kinda tricked into

The Time has come!

Hi there!   Only 10 years after the fact did the PS1 prices finally drop low enough to make me buy one. Strolling a flea market today I got one in excellent condition for 10 Euro, a price even I couldn't resist anymore. With all hooks and two controllers, I'm ready to go now I guess   For the start I picked up a copy of Grandia at the same flea market, so I hope I'll have an interesting RPG experience for my first game to try   Greetings, Manuel

Introducing Dungeon Master

Hi there!   Ha! Look at the bastard taking his last breath:   Wow, I hadn't expected that playing Dungeon Master again after twenty years would still be such an incredibly great experince! But it's been every bit as good as I remembered it!   I've been trying the Amiga version in emulation first, but that kinda sucked. I spent more time with "Guru Meditations" and reloading than actually playing the game.   But the PC version ran totally smooth with DOSBox. It's only fault is that it

Hard'n'Heavy

Hi there!   Move over Sisters, here come:   Hard'n'Heavy (1989):     Programmer: Armin Gessert Graphics: Manfred Trenz, Andreas Escher Musician: Chris Hülsbeck   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: N/A Lemon64 Rating: 7.7   Now, Hard'n'Heavy is a tricky one. Remember when I said that Nintendo forced Giana Sisters off the market? Well, Hard'n'Heavy is the inoffical sequel to it. In fact, it is so inoffical, that it wasn't even released under the Rainbow Arts label. Still, all just camouflage.

Giant Monster Games

Hi there!   I'm trying to research this interesting topic. There seem to be only a very few games made within that particular theme and most of them seem to suck. I compiled a list of the major ones that seem to have a better reputation or at least some "historical value". It's mainly derived from the mobygames "Giant Monster Games" category, but I'm almost certain that there must be some more "good" ones   Crush, Crumble and Chomp! 1981 C64 Epyx The Movie Monster Game 1986 C64
