Playing P47 Thunderbolt (C64)

Hi there!   After Psycho Pigs UXB another Jaleco Arcade game got converted to the C64:     Unfortnately though, this one is complete trash. It should be quite a challenge to find a worse C64 programming team than the makers of this conversion. I've never seen a multiload with such horrible, horrible graphics. The ugly mess you see above is one of the best looking scenes of the game already, I swear. What you can't see is the stuttering scrolling and the almost non existent sprite animatio

The Damned on facebook!

Hi there!   There you go: http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Damned-Fan-Page/174019602646922   Well, this could be the smallest blog entry I ever wrote, but let me highlight this bit from one for their first status entries:   "Wheels are in motion for the Damned touring the United States in October. And we don't just mean California. For official updates please like our page."   Greetings, Manuel

Playing Doctor Doom's Revenge (C64)

Hi there!   The Amazing Spider-Man and Captain America in Doctor Doom's Revenge:     That definitely is by far the longest title of a game I've been "Playing..." so far!   Ah well, after seeing games based on DC Comics like Batman and Superman, it's been about time that finally a brave developer (Paragon Software) made a game based on Marvel Comics. Not that Captain America or Spider-Man would be real favorites of mine - I've always been much more into the X-Men. At least, with Dr. Doo

Playing Street Cred Football (C64)

Hi there!   I know it's hard to tell from the screenshot, but as usual that's European Football, not American:     Well, well... here I thought it'd be absolutely impossible to make a C64 soccer game worse than Fighting Soccer, but here we have a programming team called "Wow Software", that definitely tried very hard to claim the "All Time Worst C64 Soccer Game" award!   As the name alreadly indicates, "Street Cred Football" tries to provide the experience of a backyard 5-A-Side-Soccer

Fotoromanza

Hi there!   My all-time favorite song from Gianna Nannini - IMO one of the very best 80's tunes that time forgot. That incredible power in her voice. I even still like the look she has in that video. I guess I'm forever stuck in the 80's   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT_CTOllIDA     Greetings, Manuel

Playing Jack the Nipper 2 (C64)

Hi there!   Oh no! The horror! The horror! Jack the Nipper is back!     Well, even though I remember playing it for quite some time, I never really liked Jacks first game. In fact, I ended up totally ignoring the sequel because of it. So now I'm taking a chance to see wether I was missing something...   Well, like most of Gremlins games at the time (e.g. Auf Wiedersehen Monty), this game contains a large map made of 50-60 scrolling screens worth of adventurous gameplay with an emphasis

Idle Gossip

Hi there!   I don't think any words could describe The Toy Dolls better than this video:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNqG51cG4kw     Greetings, Manuel

Playing Dugger (Amiga)

Hi there!   I bet you can guess from the screenshot what attracted my attention here:     Yup, when reading about Dugger, I was expecting no less than Dig Dug on steroids   How wrong I was...   This rare swiss game production from Linel starts with a very cool intro sequence showcasing excellent Amiga graphics and music. While the music can hold this quality level during the actual game, the graphics are a first downer.   Content wise it's the most blatant Dig Dug ripoff you can i

Playing Rick Dangerous (C64)

Hi there!   Introducing none other than Lara Crofts dad, Rick Dangerous:     Oh yes! While Core Design probably didn't have much of a life after making Tomb Raider, they definitely did before! I've been looking forward to featuring the early Core titles in this series ever since I played "Son of Chuck", my favorite Sega Master System game.   Rick Dangerous probably wasn't their first game overall, but definitely the first that left an impression. If you've never played it, you can think

Playing Typhoon Thompson (Amiga)

Hi there!   Six years after Choplifter, Dan Gorlin returned to form with Typhoon Thompson:     The full title is "Typhoon Thompson in Search for the Sea Child", which is also a good summary of your mission already. The sea child was kidnapped by a bunch of sea kobolds, so the sea spirits equipped TT with a boat and weapons to fight them, sending him out to return the child.   In an inevitable comparison with Choplifter, the gameplay actually does share some aspects, even when considerin

Playing Beam (C64)

Hi there!   Enough with the clones! Today I tried a pretty original action puzzler:     Normally I'm shying away from these, since they usually have 200 and more levels, but this one was advertized to have 27 only, so I gave it a try   This is one of the rare playable games from German developer Magic Bytes. They usually did games with good graphics and music (Beam qualifies here as well!), but most of them where total disasters, often scoring less than 20% in magazines   Well, this

Playing Hostages (NES)

Hi there!   One from the days when Atari was still called Infogrames!     Well, I liked some of their Amiga games back in the day. Even when they mostly were just Atari ST ports, they still usally had very good graphics and music, plus that certain kind of french strangeness.   In theory, Hostages could probably be considered the godfather of tactical squad shooters like e.g. Rainbow Six. Back in the day though, I remember it was more considered a terrorist themed mini game collection

Playing Karate Kid II (Amiga)

Hi there!   Two fast ones in a row, of course a handful of Karatekas couldn't keep me busy for long:     Some clever programmer named Steve Bak once figured that there was no 16-Bit version of International Karate availble and so teamed up with artist Pete Lyon to create one.   Some clever publisher named Microdeal then bought a license for Karate Kid 2 to spice it up some.   Karate Kid 2 was the first of many 16-Bit Bak/Lyon games. Most of which were of dubious quality, but they all

The Damned German Date!

Hi there!   Wild times ahead once again! Today finally a german "The Damned" date has been announced!   On 16th June they'll play an Open Air Show on Castle Abenberg (near Nuremberg), together with Billy Idol!   http://www.feuertanz-festival.de/abenberg2010/   The ticket price is an insane 53 Euro and it's a 3 hour ride, but since it's the only German show announced so far, I'll definitely be there   I've never seen Billy Idol before, but I hear he's still got it, no?   Greetings,

My favorite Youtube shows

Hi there!   Television was yesterday, today I'm watching more stuff on Youtube:   1. TOBUSCUS   His "LITERAL" Trailers never get old. He's simply replacing the audio track of official trailers with his own. Sounds lame, but has to be seen, that guy is a genious. My favorite is this one:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1tRU1fsU_Y   (Absolutely check out his spoof Facebook commercials for e.g. Farmville as well!)   2. Hot For Words   Learning never was so much fun. The idea is easy

Magnetron

Hi there!   Here comes the next Graftgold title! After Paradroid and Uridium another re-visit with   Magnetron     Ratings: Zzap! Rating: 67% Lemon64: 6.6   Staff: Andrew Braybrook (Additional graphics) Steve Turner (everything else)   Historical notes: Following my articles, one might think by now that Graftgold was a one-man show. In fact tough, it was a two-man show. While I was reviewing the C64 titles only, Steve Turner wrote just as many games for the Spectrum, most being c

Playing Sidewize (C64)

Hi there!   So who can guess which Capcom arcade inspired this one:     I have to apologize upfront for launching into this with a screen straight from the final boss battle, but it was the first halfway decent graphics to be seen in this spectrum conversion   It is a horizontally scrolling shmup where you're the last hope of mankind, equipped with a jetpack. There's really bad invaders, but you get all the standard formation annihilation boni (speedups/firepower) to beat them.   You

Mii and the Wii - 3 / 2010

Hi there!   Like the Wii is currently slowing down on game releases that catch my interest, my playtime is slowing down as well. Still had a few titles spinning though   The list of games I'm done with: Zelda TP, Excite Truck, Metal Slug Anthology, Geometry Wars, Bully , Zack & Wiki , SMG, Disaster , MP 3 , Fire Emblem , de Blob, Lego Indiana Jones, No More Heros , MadWorld, Wario Land, RE4, RE:UC, Another Code , Cursed Mountain , MP Trilogy, RE: DC, Firefighter, Dead Space , Muramasa,

Playing Out Run (Genesis)

Hi there!   I'm rarely "Playing..." racing games, but I don't mind having a closer look every once in a while:     I remember playing a round or two every time I saw it somewhere in my youth, but never really cared about getting a home version. The C64 version was rated 20% in Happy Computer and later the Amiga had much better offerings like e.g. Test Drive 2 or Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge.   I thought the best version should be the Genesis one, after all coming from Sega themselves. Playing Into the Eagle's Nest (C64)

Hi there!   Definitely the closest thing to Doom on the C64:     Well, actually it is closer to Wolfenstein 3D than Doom, but the C64 had two Wolfenstein games as well, so the introductory sentence wouldn't have worked...   It really is the very same concept in 2D: Shoot Nazis, collect keys, open doors, use elevators - everything is there. If it hadn't been released a couple of years earlier, one would probably consider it being a Demake of Doom these days. Back in 1987 it was just co

Playing Hillsfar (NES)

Hi there!   Let's have a look at another AD&D title for the NES:     Somehow Hillsfar for the NES is probably one of the weirdest games in existance.   The original home computer version this is based on was kinda supposed to bridge the waiting time between the releases of Pool of Radiance and Curse of the Azure Bonds. You could basically load single Pool of Radiance characters into Hillsfar and train them there. There's a series of quests to perform (3 for every class) and solving

X-Out

Hi there!   Move over Katakis, here comes:   X-Out (1990):     Program: Jörg Prenzing Graphics: Andreas Escher Musician: Michael Hendriks   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: 82% Lemon64 Rating: 8.2   At first glance a sequel to Katakis or yet another R-Type clone if you prefer, still the story of this one is a little different. As far as I remember, did Rainbow Arts try to create an Arcade machine at the time. When at some point this got shelved, the graphics and probably other things got
