Wow! Germany wins the 2010 WC!

Hi there!   Just look here, how the final rounds will happen according to my calculations:     Tough, tough tournament!   Our guys will eliminate Argentina and Brasil along the road, before destroying England in the penalties! This is going to be the best WC ever!   Greetings, Manuel

Playing Savage (C64)

Hi there!   And here comes another 3 part multiload C64 game, this time from Firebird:     And this time the individual stages are so radically different from each other, that you really wonder if developer Probe Software didn't just tie three totally unrelated games together with some silly background story   The start kinda makes sense. You're a mighty sidescrolling Barbarian, hacking'n'slashing through a scenery of castle walls.   In the second part you're zipping Space Harrieresq

Playing S.D.I. (C64)

Hi there!   Another first for the "Playing..." series. Or a second?     Indeed, this Sega Arcade conversion has absolutely nothing in common with the already featured S.D.I. game from Cinemaware but the name   This one is made for all the old-school shoot'em fans in the world. It doesn't get much simpler than this: You're controlling an SDI satellite, shooting everything on the screen that moves.   The game is divided into two separate waves: Each stage starts with the "offensive" on

Playing Typhoon (C64)

Hi there!   I can't believe that this one isn't available on the NES:     No, really. Konami converted everything and their grandma to the NES, they even founded 2 sub-companies to undergo Nintendos 5-games-per-year limit, so it's amazing to see this game is available on the C64, but not on the NES   Anyway, Typhoon is an 8 stage shoot'em up that mixes 194X like horizontal scrolling stages with Afterburnerish 3D stages, each of them ending with more or less impressive boss fights.

Radioactivity

Hi there!   Kinda insprired by recent news...   I've seen this performance live in 1997, one of the best moments in my entire life:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXD6Gtinvbc     Greetings, Manuel

Playing Pool of Radiance (NES)

Hi there!   The only 'Gold Box' game from SSI that hit the NES:     Well, it got the two horrible Dragonlace action games, also Dragonstrike and Hillsfar, but this is the only full blown AD&D RPG that got converted to the NES. Of course I had to check this version out   It is surprisingly close to the computer versions, although the graphics certainly suffered. They're even more iconized here and also lost a lot of color. On the plus side you get background music - that is if you l

Playing Return of the Jedi (C64)

Hi there!   What, no vectors?!?     Well, Atari probably figured that they wouldn't get away with yet another recycling of the old Star Wars vector coin-ops, so they returned to more common raster grahpics to finish the Trilogy.   Of course I choose the C64 version. And it's horrible. I kinda understood the poor C64 versions of the vector games, but delivering such a mess for RotJ is insulting the unstoppable 8-Bit juggernaut. The C64 definitely can do a much better job at some diagona

Playing Phantis (C64)

Hi there!   Another one of those rare games from Spain, this is probably more popular under the name "Game Over II":     As you can see above, at the time I'm writing this, you can see nothing. I'm clueless regarding what actually caused this, but something drained 1GB worth of bandwidth from my webspace within just a few days. In a 'normal' month I'm getting nowhere near that limit...   Back to Phantis. It basically follows the template of the other games from Dinamic, so if you read t

Playing Rocket Ranger (C64)

Hi there!   Abandoning the C64 with style, Cinemaware bade farewell with Rocket Ranger:     Originally I missed this great C64 version, since at the time I already had an Amiga. I must admit I never got into it though, most likely because my version came without a manual   Well, Rocket Ranger is a great continuation of Cinemas better earlier efforts. Further improving the tried and tested formula of Defender of the Crown and Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon, it adds some more varied

Mii and the Wii - 5 / 2009

Hi there!   Oh I'm such a poor soul! Since the last reports I only managed buying two Wii games! But at least one of them was quality!   The list of games I'm done with: Wii Sports, Zelda TP, Excite Truck, Metal Slug Anthology, Geometry Wars, Bully , Eledees, Zack & Wiki , SMG, Death Jr., Battalion Wars 2, Disaster , MP 3 , Fire Emblem , Boom Blox, de Blob, Opoona, Lego Indiana Jones, Okami, No More Heros , MadWorld, Tunguska, Deadly Creatures, Force Unleashed, Wario Land, RE4, RE:UC,

Playing Hostages (NES)

Hi there!   One from the days when Atari was still called Infogrames!     Well, I liked some of their Amiga games back in the day. Even when they mostly were just Atari ST ports, they still usally had very good graphics and music, plus that certain kind of french strangeness.   In theory, Hostages could probably be considered the godfather of tactical squad shooters like e.g. Rainbow Six. Back in the day though, I remember it was more considered a terrorist themed mini game collection

Fight Back

Hi there!   I know I'm 30 years late to the party, but I'm just getting into "The Alarm". This two year old song about fighting cancer sounds so incredibly '76 - my absolute favourite:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ot26NBjxins     Greetings, Manuel

Playing Typhoon Thompson (Amiga)

Hi there!   Six years after Choplifter, Dan Gorlin returned to form with Typhoon Thompson:     The full title is "Typhoon Thompson in Search for the Sea Child", which is also a good summary of your mission already. The sea child was kidnapped by a bunch of sea kobolds, so the sea spirits equipped TT with a boat and weapons to fight them, sending him out to return the child.   In an inevitable comparison with Choplifter, the gameplay actually does share some aspects, even when considerin

Fotoromanza

Hi there!   My all-time favorite song from Gianna Nannini - IMO one of the very best 80's tunes that time forgot. That incredible power in her voice. I even still like the look she has in that video. I guess I'm forever stuck in the 80's   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT_CTOllIDA     Greetings, Manuel

Dragon Wars

Hi there!   Interplaying Dragon Wars (1990):     When everyone was waiting for Bard's Tale IV, Interplay gave us Dragon Wars instead. I'm not complaining though, since it seems that Dragon Wars breathed some fresh ideas into the stale Bard's Tale formula. Most notably did it get a Wastelandish skill system in addition to magic spells.   Playing on a far away fantasy planet, the players start stranded in a prison-like town on a foreign continent. The parties first task is to break out of

Neuromancer

Hi there!   Interplaying Neuromancer (1988):     I remember that back in the day Neuromancer was filed under RPG, but after just spending a first night playing it, I must say it felt much more like an adventure to me. There are a few role playing elements in it, like the upgradeable skill chips and softwarez, but other than that most parts are a lot closer to e.g. Space Quest than The Bard's Tale.   Based on the book from William Gibson, you're taking the role of a computer hacker in C

Playing Menace (C64)

Hi there!   Let's have a look at the first game of a team that would later create Grand Theft Auto:     Well, back then "Rockstar North" was still called "DMA Design". And before creating GTA they would still waste a lot of time working on thousands of Lemmings games   I was positively surprised from this Psygnosis production, especially since their first two Amiga games (Barbarian and Terrorpods) did turn out pretty bad when scaled down to the C64. (Of course, the 16-Bit versions were

Playing Eliminator (C64)

Hi there!   Here comes Eliminator, John Phillips next game after Nebulus:     Cooking with water only this time, he created a not so fresh mixture between Trailblazer and RoadBlasters. Flying along abstract roads and tunnels, your ships task is to eliminate (Aha! ) everything in your way.   Okay, it's not that easy. You have to stay on track, avoid obstacles and use ramps carefully to jump from one lane to the other. In a few spots you can even hop to the ceiling and drive there, which

Playing Psycho Pigs UXB (C64)

Hi there!   What a cutesy and obscure japanese Arcade conversion do we have here:     I did some research and figured that this one is based on Jalecos "Butasan". It's probably easiest summed up as "Dynablaster without Walls"   In each of the 12 rounds, there's up to a dozen computer controlled pigs on the screen and about twice a many time-bombs. They have countdown timers which make them reliably explode. Before they do so, you can pick'em up with your pig, trying to hit one of your

Mii and the Wii - 4 / 2009

Hi there!   The time since the last report was mostly spent with Resident Evil. I also tried focusing my always growing shopping list some more on the higher quality titles   The list of games I'm done with: Wii Sports, Zelda TP, Excite Truck, Metal Slug Anthology, Geometry Wars, Bully , Eledees, Zack & Wiki , Mario Galaxy, Death Jr., Battalion Wars 2, Disaster , Metroid 3 , Fire Emblem , Boom Blox, de Blob, Opoona, Lego Indiana Jones, Okami, No More Heros , MadWorld, Tunguska, Deadly C
