Microvision homebrew (part 9)

I tried and tried to open a Microvision cart but they just won't open. Anyway, I opened the package of my Propeller Chip and compared it to the width of the spot where I suspect the Microvision's chip is (right under the cartridge label). The Propeller cart is wider than the Microvision. So it wouldn't fit inside the console as is. The Microvision's chip has pin-like things while the Propeller chip just has a long strip of white, which I assume is sort of like the same thing. Anyway, the Parallax packaging told me to download drivers first and told me a website to go to (http://www.parallax.com/rt/) and I couldn't find any info about how to download the drivers. Some website that is. So this is kind of a letdown for the project, unless there's a way to make it so I could use the pins already in a Microvision cartridge and connect them to the Propeller chip. Then I could just use an opened Block Buster cart with the long high black thing sticking out of the Propeller chip. I couldn't close the cart around it because of that high black thing with tiny holes in it. So, anyway, the quest to make a Microvision homebrew continues...

For prototyping purposes, you can remove the original chip, and attach wires as required. between the propeller PCB and the Microvision PCB.

For the real deal, however, you would likely be designing an original PCB that would replace the one in the Microvision cartridge.

To open the Microvision cartridge, you should see a screw in the middle of the back of the "top" half of the cartridge... near where the PCB edge connector is. There is usually a small sticker covering the screw. Remove the sticker from the back, remove the screw, and the back cover (covering the PCB) should come off easily. Take it off slowly so you don't lose the springs that hold the door of the edge connector closed until inserted in the Microvision.

edit: the fifth picture here shows the back of the cartridge, this time with the sticker "beside" the screw: http://nzgamer.com/srassy/blogs/686/microvision-console-review.html

Not a good way to start your education (maybe send Parallax a note and let them know). From http://www.parallax.com/tabid/832/Default.aspx download Propeller/Spin Tool Software v1.3.2 which includes the driver, the IDE and the manuals. Then have a look at http://learn.parallax.com/KickStart and http://www.parallax.com/Store/Microcontrollers/PropellerDevelopmentBoards/tabid/514/CategoryID/73/List/0/SortField/0/Level/a/ProductID/748/Default.aspx for KickStart specific information.
