...I should have plenty of time for Atari coding. Unfortunetely, that is because I was part of a layoff my employer once again commenced this week. My emotions have went from relief to disappointment to apathy. I spent last night updating my resume and plan to look for jobs to send it to today. I had been looking around for a second job because finances were a little tight anyway, and already know before I begin that there isn't a lot of jobs that suit my qualifications. There are plenty of other jobs to be had, but they all pay about $8.00 an hour... my mortgage and student loans just can't survive on Wal-Mart pay. The real problem is that I bought the house just over a year ago and have no equity in it to even cover agent fees. So in essence, selling my house for the same price I bought it would cost me 5-6 thousand dollars. I really don't want to sell my house anyway, as I would lose all the first-time buying priveledges. For whatever reason, it seems that since I graduated college and came under the power of the man, I have just not been able to get ahead no matter how hard I try. And now, I'm stuck in Kansas City which pretty much ends my broadcasting career (which generally stipulates you move around a lot). So, I'm off to buy a paper and scour the classifieds both there and online. I'll probably even go downtown and look around for help wanted signs around lunchtime. Wish me luck peoples...JD

I hope you find work soon! Losing a job is no fun; it's much worse when you have big responsibilities.

Hasn't your house appreciated in value in the last year, though? I would think that it would have appreciated enough so that you could break even if you had to sell.

Other than the house, no real responsibilities... no wife, no kids, etc. I'm sure my house has appreciated *some* in the last year, but there is no real way of telling without having an appraisal done. And if I sell it now, I have a feeling I may never get the chance to buy one again. Not only that, my roommate of three years is about to graduate with her masters degree and move back to Oklahoma in May. It would be a poor way of repaying her to say "yeah, thanks, but you're going to need somewhere to live your last two months here."

Anyway, I don't have a lot of cash (Christmas and New Years) but do have enough to survive for a couple of months. Hopefully things will take care of themself and this could be a blessing in disguise. That just seems like a long ways off right now reading through job listings...

You should immediately get a forbearance on your student loans. They will suspend payments for as long as you need them to and you won't go into default.

I was a day or two away from making this call as you suggested, but luckily I found a new job today. I'm getting paid more, better benefits, and will enjoy the company a lot more than my old one. Not only that, but I'm now back into the industry my degree is in, so maybe I'll have a future in it after all (this excites my parents, you'd almost think they helped pay my way through college!) :). Getting fired (laid off, in PC terms ;)) really was a blessing. Thanks for all the kind words and advice people posted here.

BTW- what's the difference between a forbearance and a deferring your loans? Two names for the same thing, or are they actually different processes? Just curious.
