Increased Drobo 5D capacity

SpiceWare

The new drive showed up before lunch. I unboxed it and let it sit for a couple hours as it was warm from being on the truck all morning (it's currently 92F here in Houston).

That red WD on the static bag is a sticker that you can put on your RAID enclosure. I've never been a fan of all the stickers that end up on Windows PCs, so I doubt I'll be sticking that on my Drobo.

Installing the new drive was as easy as 1-2-3:

  1. Remove front cover of Drobo
  2. Insert drive into empty bay
  3. Replace front cover of Drobo

That was it, didn't have to tell the Drobo that a new drive was going to be inserted or anything. The extra capacity was immediately available.

The Reserved for expansion seen in the After Usage Detail is why I was waiting for the 4TB drive to become available. If I'd filled the last two bays with 3TB drives, I'd need to replace 3 drives at the same time to see any extra capacity. If I fill in the last two bays with 4TB drives I only need to replace 1 drive to see extra capacity.

I cancelled DirecTV at the start of the year and am now using a Mac mini + antenna for TV. The Drobo is used for the recordings, as well as other content (iTunes, ripped DVDs, etc).

My DVR Project category has all my blog entries(33 so far) related to this. I've saved $946 since January.
