RPG partial overworld mockup

I am still in search of someone to help me create a true 2600 RPG. In order to solicit help, here is a mockup of the overworld starting point I have in mind for the RPG game I have talked about.dwmap01b6mq.gifHere is a mockup of the basic screenshot (inside the grey area but without the black dots you see here :P) and how/where the tiles derived from. This game is not a port of Dragon Warrior as I have talked about doing, but most of the terrain will be based on the same kinds of things (with a few added and a few removed). I did try and change everything I could to Atari-possible, just to see what could and could not actually be done. What you probably can't tell is that it will be based on the early middle ages, from somewhere around 400-500 AD. It has an exacting story line, but I wish it to remain hidden from people until they actually play the game. That is another reason I will not show a full version of the overworld map, for I fear it may give away too much about the game itself.rpgterrain7sa.gifBasically, everything to the right is the "usable" stuff, and everything to the left was for generating ideas. This was made to look as close to the DW starting point as possible, but the real game will not be quite like this. My overworld map has 5000 tiles, and I am hoping to fit the game into 32-64K. Anyone interested in helping, please contact me.-JD

How do you imagine this game looking? Something like Andrew Davies' Boulderdash kernel might work well in a 4A50 bankswitch cart (hopefully I'll be able to do my next batch of protos soon). If you were willing to accept a slight reduction in screen width (eight tiles instead of 10) you might pick up some flexibility. Do you think you could make the game look good in a 10x10 grid of tiles, each 4x18 in dimension (with the rows being color-striped)?

Wow, I hadn't seen that. Any word on the BD project? I imagined this looking like the mockup shows, 7x7 grid, with tiles 2x16 in dimension. That would start halfway across the screen and only use PF2 and PF1 (reflected screen). I think a variety of options are open though, depending on comprimises you make vs. time you have. With flicker, I think you can almost display anything you want, as shown by Andrew with BD and Paul Slocum with HSR.
