Larry the Lemon
So I've been working on the game Black Friday! for the past few days. After finishing it, I discovered that it wasn't very fun to play. One of the first things to do was add a timer. So I did. Next, I needed to make the game fit in 2k. Took me a couple of hours, but I had to change the sprites. As you might have expected, sprites along with individual sprite colors takes up more room than one sprite with one color. So I changed the guy with a shopping cart into the shape of a lemon and colored it yellow. But what to do about the demon-type enemy? If you put two variables with the same value on one line, it frees up about a byte or so. Every byte counts, so I made the demon a banana. Changing the guy into a lemon freed up some room since I made the lemon a lot shorter. Same goes with Barry the Banana. And now I have Larry the Lemon. The back story goes like this:
"In the Black Forest, Larry was assigned by the king of Germany to get rid of the black ants that have been chewing on the black trees, turning them into black tree stumps. But the evil banana, friend to all ant-kind, wasn't too happy with Larry trying to get rid of the ants, so he was sent by the ants to try and stop Larry. Your job is to see how many ants you can get rid of before the world ends."
Kind of a weird story, but it helps set up the game good...I think. But why would the king of Germany assign a lemon to do the job? Perhaps ants hate sour lemons. I don't know. Well, anyway, I solved the problem I was having with the static-y sound. The problem was I had the background color set to $EE. I guess it doesn't like that. After trying various things, I was running out of things to try, so I tried that in desperation. So now I have a 2k game that well may not look less than stellar, but plays hopefully good.
