Dreamcast game thoughts part 3

So I went to the store today. I picked up Sonic Adventure for $15 and a game called "Rippin' Riders" for $3. I just tested them both and they work fine. I also got some new batteries and put them into my VMU. After I searched for a little screwdriver, I unscrewed the screw. As it turned out, there weren't any batteries in there to begin with. So how was it saving my game data, and why do I need batteries in the first place? Well, at least my Dreamcast doesn't sound like a smoke alarm when I power it up. I also looked around in the VMU and found that when I played the Sonic game, the Chao part takes up 28 blocks! Do I really need that if I don't want to play the Chao (tamagotchi-type) minigame? Can I delete that part? Or do I need it like I need the other Sonic save data? Also, I am still looking for interesting non-sports-fighting-or-RPG titles. Most of what the stores have now are sports games, which makes me wonder why they made so many. Do people actually sit around and play an NFL simulator for an hour? I like to do my gaming in short bursts when I feel like it. Plus I don't have that long of an attention span. I thought Sonic Adventure was going to be just a basic Sonic game. It plays OK, but the RPG elements confuse me, which is why I don't play RPGs. I guess that's why they put the word "Adventure" in the title. Plus, I doubt I'll get very far in the game since I died twice in the opening battle because the game wouldn't tell me what to do. I hate games that don't tell you what to do. Maybe if they gave you some instructions beforehand, it wouldn't be so hard. (i.e. "Punch this guy's mouth three times," you know, something like that.) It took me two deaths for the female voice-over to tell me what to do. Well, if the Sonic games on the Dreamcast have RPG elements to them, I doubt I'll get the second one.

Is it possible the batteries are just being used to power the LCD on the VMU for when the unit is not connected to the controller?

I love the Dreamcast but always always always have hated the VMU. I use a Nexus memory card as well as one of the Sega 4x Memory cards. They have no screens, but have no batteries and work wonderfully, and have tons of space.

Huh, looks like my purple translucent nexus 4x card is now rare enough that there are none on the 'bay. But check into the Sega memory card, it'll take care of all your troubles. :)

The batteries in the VMU are only used for playing VMU games on the go or linking up to another VMU to transfer save data. They are not utilized for actual saving when plugged into a Dreamcast controller.
