Fishing for the 2600

Bomberpunk had a good idea for something that hasn't been done on the 2600 yet: A fishing game. (NO, Fishing Derby doesn't count.) Right now, it's just a guy in a boat in a lake moving around. Use the joystick to move the boat. I used audio channel 0 to simulate a motorized boat motor humming. Pressing fire would bring up the radar, but I haven't got that far yet. I just started on this and just this took me an hour and yelling and screaming at the computer. Since the Rally X for the 2600 (as well as a few other games that I can't think of right now) have radar, I figure it's possible. But I'm wondering if I can do this. I haven't even played a fishing game in my whole life, so I don't know if I'm the right guy for the job, but I'll try to keep working on this. So anyway, here's my work for tonight. Any bugs or suggestions?

i have a few ideas (obviously) since i kinda brainstormed the whole thing earlier today.

possible titles: Atari Championship Fishing, Atari Fishing, Legend of Sea Men Swallower

Game 1 - 20 minutes to catch 100lb (normal)

Game 2 - 10 minutes to catch 100lb (hard)

Game 3 - time attack. clock keeps ticking up from 0:00 until you reach 100 lb caught

Game 4 - freeplay (easy)

divide the water into zones. let's go with 9 zones. so for this example, 3 zones have no fish, 3 zones have small fish, 2 zones have medium fish, 1 zone has large fish

every 30 or so seconds, randomize the zone contents.

small fish: 1-5lb

medium fish: 6-15 lb

large fish: 16-30 lb

the legendary Sea Men Swallower: 69 lb

i'd type more but my 3 month old just exploded her diaper.

Thanks for the ideas. This gives me a lot more to go on. I doubt that I'll use the title Legend of Sea Men Swallower, but it is kinda funny. I was just going to use the title "Fishing", I bet no other 2600 cart has that name, although "Atari Fishing" sounds good as well. I'll test what I have later on tonight in my harmony cart. And your baby must be really talented if her diaper exploded.

I've been wanting to make a fishing game for the Atari 2600 since the early 1980s. There is a certain type of fishing I wanted to try to recreate on the Atari. I might be able to do it with the DPC+ kernel since the sprites are more detailed.
