Super Action FAIL!

blog-0231411001410553241.jpgWhen Luc from Team Pixleboy contacted me a while back to help with a Colecovision Homebrew project I was super excited and gladly agreed. The project was to be a carved wood insert for the Game "Super action soccer"

Well, I'm a metal guy and do not really work with wood but hey, I'll give anything a try ;) Long story short, a small fire and broken machine later, wood was not going to happen, lol. I suggested metal, being I'm a metal guy, and Luc agreed we could give it a try :) So, the project was to call for a simple insert to take up the rest of the space in the plastic case with some etched graphics on it. Thats pretty easy, but I had to go and suggest to make it more detailed and harder, lol..

I decided on a design that would consist of a full metal housing, with a slide out plate held in place with a rabbet cut (including etched graphics) that when removed would have a nice stained piece of wood to proudly display the game. It really bugged me that due to the hinges on the case the game would not stand up straight to display the Super Action soccer manual artwork on a shelf, this small piece of wood stashed away in the metal case could be taken out to correct that problem. With Luc's approval of the design I got to work, and nearly completed it...

(My 95% finished prototype)

Unfortunately, due to me taking on a LOT of projects during this time I fell extremely behind at my actual job and was unable to complete this in the required time frame. Only this one design prototype exists and the official game was sold with a foam cut insert. It bothers me to this day because it was entirely my fault. On the plus side, Luc did contact me for another project and it was finished in one day. I also scored a free copy of Black Onyx for my work on the second project and I display it proudly next to my Super Action Fail prototype as a reminder that if I make a mistake to try harder next time :)

All in all even though it never saw the light of day I learned a lot from it and it's actually one of my most prized collection items :)
