A fundamental rule of Atari development is that you can never have too many projects going at the same time. :P So from out of the blue comes Coastal Chaos. Other possible titles for this game are Avast Ye!, or Pirates of the South Seas. (Since Pirates! is already taken, and Sid Meier probably has a few lawyers.)This game takes place in the early 18th century. You are a colonel, commissioned to defend a fortress on a small island in the south Caribbean. Your advance scouts have reported that a fleet of pirate ships is bearing down on your fortress, intent on pillaging the entire island. Your only defense is a large artillery unit, stationed on the southern side of the fortress.Your main advantage against the pirate fleet is range. The pirate ships are armed wth 14 cannons. If they get within firing range of the fort, you're done for. However, your cannon is positioned high on the top of the main bastion, and the cannon itself has sufficient firepower to launch a cannonball 4 times the distance of the smaller pirate cannons. Can you stop the pirate fleet and save your island? This game is a mix of several concepts. The first is the classic game Rampart. I played this game a lot in the 80s. I never liked having to do the Tetris-like placement of the castle walls, but I loved the ship bombardment phase. Then of course there's the classic game Pirates!, originally for the Commodore 64. There was a challenging phase where you had to approach a beach while being bombarded by a fort. The third element of this game is from the multitude of Artillery Duel style games, where you have to select the angle and power of a cannon, and then fire it to hit a target. In this game, you will control the cannon. The cannon fire will be 3-dimentional. You will set the horizontal angle of the cannon, possibly the vertical angle (or I may just lock this at 45 degrees), and use the firebutton to determine the amount of powder to place in the cannon. Wind will also be a factor in your calculations, and wind direction and strength will change thoughout the game. There are 2 main differences between this game and your standard-issue artillery game. The first is that the target is moving, so you'll be constantly modifiying your calculations to hit the enemy. The second is that the game is realtime, so you have to think fast. Most artillery games give you plenty of time to take a shot, but in this game, time is of the essence, because you must stop the pirate ship before it reaches the shore. Here are a few planned features for the game:- It will take multiple shots to sink the pirate ship. Probably about 5.- There will be specific targets on each ship that will have an advantage if you can hit them. If you hit one of the sails, the ship will slow down. If you hit the steering wheel at the back of the ship, it will lose the ability to move left or right. If you hit the small light-brown hatch in the center of the ship, the ship will explode and sink instantly. This is where the ship's munitions are stored.- There will be multiple pirate ships on the screen at one time.coastalchaos29ql.pngpesco_pacman_v4a.zipFeatures:- Fort and beach in playfield graphics.- Island and ocean in background graphics.- Multi-color cannon.- 60 pixel long multi-color pirate ship.Known Issues:- None.ToDo:- Add rotation sprites to cannon.- Add cannonball fire.

My gripe about the Tetris part of it, was that it wouldn't always give you usable pieces. It's fine if you have to work a little to fit one in, but giving you several completely useless ones in a row was just bad game design. That, or they shouldn't have put such tight time restrictions on rebuilding. I lost more often by not enclosing my castle, than by getting blown up or invaded.
