Soup of the Day

With the death of Wordplay magazine (I got an e-mail notice because I sent some rejected puzzles to them.) I sadly looked through the issues I had. I don't have them all, and it only lasted about a year. I noticed every issue I did have started with a puzzle called "Double Alphabet Soup." I tried to make my own. About 80 minutes later, I had made my own. I used all 52 letters (26 x 2, hence the "Double" in the title of the puzzle.) I had noticed and completed some Alphabet Soup puzzles in a few variety puzzle magazines I had, but this double one puts a new spin on it. Basically, there are 26 words, each missing two letters. Your job is to fill in the blank letters. But it isn't that easy, since extra letters are added at the beginning and/or ends of the rows. Your job is to sniff out the words and then put the blank letters in. All letters of the alphabet are only used twice. It was kind of hard thinking of a word where the letter J is used in the second half of a semi-long word, but I did. I will go back a few years from now and start solving the ones I had made. I have some crosswords I made 2 years ago that I do this with since nobody else will do them. It's so sad, though, that the magazine died a quick death. The e-mail said that sales weren't high enough to warrant more issues. But how can you judge after only a year? Making the puzzle was kind of hard. I guess the hardest part was the J trial I described earlier. I spent about 5-10 minutes at the end trying to make a word that had my two letters left. I had to change a few words to free up letters for other words that needed them. Another hard part was making the Word document squares fit. If a really long letter was used (say, M) part of it went out of the grid and got cut off. So I lowered the font size to fit the letters in. So anyway, if you care, I made it a pdf document. http://www.atari2600land.com/crosswords/2xalphabetsoup1.pdf
