It's terrible, but I wish you the best in trying times. My advice? Spend as much time with her as you can and know she'll be in a better place. My mother died in 2014, and my main regret is that I didn't see her right before she died as I'd been many days without sleep and finally fell asleep for a full night...And I slept through the phone calls and answering machine messages from the family urging me to get to the hospital. When my brother appeared, ringing my doorbell constantly....I knew...What a horrible way to wake up! But clichéd as it sounds life goes on...Personally, I won't endorse any religions, but do believe we all meet in the end...

I just learned that my grandmother is suffering from Parkinson's Disease, and our family is having the same discussions (treatment vs. letting the disease run its course). No easy choices.

So sorry to hear that RT. Echoing what's already been said - I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. And especially what GoldLeader said - be sure to spend as much time with her as you can. That's one thing you will never regret doing, regardless of the outcome. Treasure the time you have, and do what you can to make it fun, even in the midst of all that's going on.

While it's an understatement to say this is terrible news, it's slightly less terrible that you still have time together. Stay strong.

Thanks for the replies. I'm fixing her meals, washing clothes, helping her with kindergarten/first grade workbooks to keep her brain juicy, and stuff like that, so I'm with her most of each day. The workbooks are helping. Among other things, she forgot a bunch of stuff related to telling time and the workbook about telling time has helped her regain a lot of what she lost.

 

I'm putting this stuff in my blog to help me remember what happened and when it happened and in case any of it might be helpful to somebody else in the future. The junk in her brain can't be removed, so that's why she doesn't have long. People who can have the junk removed can live much longer, especially if they are younger than 70.

I agree. Spend as much time as you possibly can with her. I know the feeling very well with my dad back in 2012.
