Hi there!

Ok. Kicking off my journey through the backcatalogue of Graftgold with:

Gribbly's Day Out

Ratings:

Zzap! Rating: 90%

Lemon64: 7.8

Staff: Steve Turner (music) / Andrew Braybrook (everything else)

Overview:

Now, this is one of those "weird" games of the early days. Or should I say "odd"?

In this game you control a frog-type Alien, that has only one foot and no arms. The reason why it can still survive, is because of it's Psi-Powers letting it fly, and it's ability to spit bubbles.

Now this Alien called Gribbly, is searching for a bunch of his children I assume, called Gribblets (see the three mushroom thingys in the screenshot).

Collect 8 of them and you're done with one of the 16 levels.

Fun in 2006:

I played this for about three hours all in all. I never had it back then, so the first hour was spent learning the controls and finding out what I'm supposed to do. Once past that hurdle, I had fun for a while, and I spent another hour until I beat the first level. The third hour it already started to get a bit boring. Don't get me wrong, I bet I'd have loved it 20 years ago, but this day and age, it doesn't offer enough to keep me entertained any longer. It's also very difficult to master, as the controls are very touchy. The fact that all levels but the first and last are to be played in randomized order also didn't help it. It seemed after those first three hours it turns from "fun" into serious "work" to make some real progress in this game.

Greetings,

Manuel

Andrew Braybrook was one of the most talented programmers in classic gaming history. He also wrote Paradroid and Uridium. I spent well over 100 hours on each of those three games. Gribbly's Day Out is among my top 10 all time favorites for the C64. I think the farthest I ever got is either level 4 or 5. This was a very tough game. I got pretty good at avoiding the maniacal black crab creature, but doing this while avoiding collisions with the landscape is nearly impossible. This would be a good game to hack just to see all 16 levels. I'm pretty sure there's a trainer version of this game out there.

Yup. Too bad his games never made him big money, so he's working for an insurance company these days

Those will be covered in my next two entries ;)

Hm... I never had Gribbly, but the 100 hours for Uridium may be close. Paradroid though... I think it would be a lot more than 100 hours. Maybe 500, maybe more. In fact to this day, I never really *stopped* playing it ;)

I just checked, but unfortunately neither a Remember nor a Nostalgia version is availabe. Maybe some day in the future? ;)

Manuel

It just occurred to me that if I wanted to get through this game, I won't need a trainer. I can use the save-state feature in the emulator, and save the game every time I make reasonable progress.

When I get some free time (arg) I'll do this, and post some screenies.
