One could call it faked fake wood.

So emulated hardware but real wood on the outside, to mark that 40 years ago they used real hardware but emulated wood on the outside.

My only surviving Compact Cassette machine, an old GE Shilloute (GE 3-5151B), is from the 70s. It is black, with "WOOD-GRAIN FINISH ON POLYSTYRENE". =P
