A DOS computer today?

HP computers offer three OS installed to choose from:

- Windows

- Linux

- FreeDOS

If most people choose Windows or Linux, I start questioning why FreeDOS is also offert.

FreeDOS: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeDOS

I wonder why some manufacturers decide to support FreeDOS as well.

Today, most people I know won't write commands.

Windows is the most os used in the world and the all tools I use are Windows.

Even my first computer was IBM PCjr, a DOS computer, I still prefer Windows today.

If I want to play DOS games, I"d run DOSbox instead.

HP uses FreeDOS for their bootable BIOS update disks, so the hardware has already been tested with it. The option is basically free for them, even if nobody takes them up on it.

As to why... Some people prefer the non-emulated approach. Others may need to run legacy software with peripherals or dongles that don't work with VMs.

Perhaps for some legacy software required for a production environment? I know of modern-day facilities still using Apple II - because it works and no need to swap it out.

Well, FreeDOS is available on-line for free. Anybody can install it. That's fine for me.

But buying computers with freedos pre-installed, I don't get it unless people started to love

typing commands or want a very cheap computer and new users choose dos games instead windows games.

When I'm typing this comments, I just think something: new games requiert internet connection to play them.

Look at Minecraft: you need to register an account to Minecraft site before you start to play. It's the same for others games.

So for some people, computers with freedos installed is a way to go, even if nobody

makes dos games anymore.
