Goofin' Around in Minecraft

I've been playing Minecraft for a long, long time, close to eight years now. But I've always been stuck with very crappy hardware to play it on so I was never really able to enjoy it to the fullest. But that all changed when I got my new computer after my laptop seized and died. It's quite a shift, going from 25 fps on a good day to 145 at the very least, and actually having a playable framerate with shaders on. I've lost my appetite for survival mode or even mods so I just build, its an excellent creative outlet and time waster if I'm feeling down or just don't have anything to do. Here's one of the projects I've been working on for a while now, its just a standard mansion/really big house based on an old build that I lost almost five years ago. I've built the whole thing by hand, not using MCEdit or other programs like that except to make backups and keep a timeline of progress.

The house features:

  • Hallways
  • Doors
  • A fully automated kitchen
  • A fully finished basement to hoard your riches and melons
  • A portal to Hell
  • A lovely backyard garden to hide to bodies of your enemies
  • A free range animal farm, for the kids
  • A library full of books you can't read
  • Another portal to Hell
  • A large empty room for social gatherings
  • Secret passageways that lead to disappointment
  • An indoor pool and hot tub
  • A hidden movie theater with built-in green-screen
  • A stable, because we're all horse people
  • More doors and hallways
  • Enough rooms to comfortably house 30 people
  • No bathrooms, not a single one
  • Lot's of darkness for creatures to appear in
  • The decapitated heads of your foes in a box
  • Inconveniently complicated layout to confuse visitors and yourself
  • Seriously, there are so many doors and hallways

How is Minecraft these days.

I always avoided it because it ran off Java which I don't believe in that extra layer just to run stuff on a PC that doesn't need it.

I know Microsoft bought it and that's the last time I paid any attention to it.

The game is better than ever. I know the Java crap is pretty easy to deal with as all you'll need to do is install Java Runtime environment if you want to modify the game in any way otherwise you'll never know it's there. Microsoft has not really meddled with the game at all, all they really did was make a windows version that doesn't use Java iirc. As for the game, the amount of new stuff that has been added is amazing. If you want to build they have you covered with plenty of excellent new decoration blocks. If you want to explore there are now underwater temples, ruins and shipwrecks to loot for goodies. If you want to take the quieter approach you can play the game as a merchant/head of one of the new overhauled villages. Caving is pretty much the same as ever. If you want to take a more aggressive approach you can now raid the new 'enemy' the illagers who stage in massive mansions and are damn hard to kill. If you want to program then they've got you covered as well, somebody actually made a video player that lets you log in to Youtube and even an Atari 2600 emulator.

Minecraft has really improved from it's more barebones aspects to become a very fleshed out and varied game. It's well worth a look if you haven't played in a while.

Nice build.

Currently my wife, son & I have started completing quests on Wynncraft.  I used to play on 2B2T (and make YouTube videos), but now I just log in to see if my base is still standing, or is anyone has left new signs.  My son used to play a lot on Hypixel, and the three of us have played a lot of local survival games (both PC and PS3).
