Finally Got A 7800 & Bootleg Enduro!

It has finally happened! I have finally gotten my grubby hands on an Atari 7800! Thank you all for your advice with this beast of a machine, the warning about the fragility of the case especially. I got this thing cheap, cheaper than usual. I got the system, power supply, two Pain-Line’s, a set of Paddles, three games, and a small storage case for about 71 dollars, and whaddaya know it was packed pretty horribly.  The rear left corner of the system cracked into several large pieces and many tiny ones, a few dabs of superglue fixed that right up and a few once-overs with a damp magic eraser and the thing still looks like it was broken in shipping but not too badly. One of the Pain-Lines snapped in half, and the other one has recently suffered as well since the screw housing snapped, I just screwed in a longer screw and it works just fine. I have ordered a replacement NES style controller from Ebay and it should get here within the week. If you’re wondering what the Serial Number for the 7800 is it’s A16C5072924

Good news! The system works, very well. The 7800 I have is one of the earlier models with the expansion port, and with some testing I’ve found that the Supercharger and those few Activision games work on it, and when using my UNO Cart Dark Chambers works as well so I won’t have to go mucking around trying to find that capacitor that I’ve been told about. The buttons are not sticky at all, thankfully, so no issues there either. Honestly I’m absolutely terrified of having to open the console up since I’m known to have the death touch for electronics in general and tend to kill most machines I mess with, my current record is four 2600’s in 24 hours. And my body count is well over 10 consoles, and I don't even do all that much, just general cleaning and normal use.

At the moment I only have one game, One-on-one Basketball, the game store I usually go to didn’t have any more and the console didn’t come with any. I snapped up a few games on Ebay so look forward to some 7800 reviews in the future on those. Once all of my purchases arrive I’ll have One-on-One, Pole Position II, Xevious, Karateka, Dig Dug, Choplifter, Food Fight, and Desert Falcon, a decent selection of various genres. It seems though that some of the more well loved titles Ikari Warriors, Commando, etc have definitely gone up in value so don’t expect anything on those anytime soon.

Another thing I got recently is a Taiwan Cooper Enduro cartridge, it seems that my prediction from last year is coming true and the well is drying up but this is mostly due to the current political turmoil over in the main supplier's country, Venezuela. Some of these games are selling for over 30 dollars! There seem to be several versions of this game released in the T.C. format, all of which just have different cartridge end labels. I have the blue variant, though there is a normal white variant and a more flashy yellow variant. Mine also came with an instruction slip, a rarity for these games. For the sake of posterity I will transcribe the instruction slip:

                        ENDURO

Game Description

You will be recquired to pass lots of cars

each day. Through suburbs, snow, fog,

desert, and prairie, sunrise to sunset --

as fast as you can, as long as you can.

Pay attention to the lighting and scenery.

(Terrible B&W image from the back of the box)

Scoring

The number of cars you must pass is posted

at the beginning of each day in the lower

right comer of your instrument panel (200

the first day, 300 on subsequent days).

Each time you pass a car, this meter counts

off by one

Game Sorts

1 game, 1 player.

They misspelled "Corner" and it was all going so well.

I don't know what they did to it but they somehow broke the game. The game stars fairly normally but all of the lighting changes have been screwed up so you'll never be able to tell what time it is. The fog has also been completely removed from the game, and it never becomes night. They also somehow screwed up the snow section, making it play far longer than it normally would, and in day two onward it goes from snow to 'night' to snow again as the morning section seems to have been removed entirely to elongate the snow section. The graphics have been fairly muddled, and the car sprites and background has been altered.

Here's what the start of Enduro looks like vs what you get in the bootleg.

I'm really only talking about this because neither AtariAge or AtariMania have any screenshots of this game so it seemed only right to share what little info I have about this game with the community.

Is that Enduro bootleg yet another PAL game played on NTSC hardware, given the odd palette? Perhaps the colour/daytime shifts would appear differently on a PAL console then.

I don't think so. I am unable to try this with the actual hardware since my TV will just go to B&W when displaying true PAL games so I took a PAL Enduro ROM and forced it to play in NTSC mode on Stella, and aside from the rolling screen, the pallet wasn't the same.

I know of at least one game that was programmed within the tolerances of both NTSC and PAL systems, Walker from Suntek, and it's possible that this version of Enduro has been modified to fall within this sweet spot as well, which would account for the crazy colors, but I doubt it. Either way this is a very modified game that somehow hasn't been dumped yet, which is kind of cool. My copy is also a dead ringer for the pictures of the NTSC copies on AtariMania, mainly since the PAL versions came in a blue box and mine is orange.

Ok, so perhaps the Taiwan Cooper simply is Enduro on Mars. Some time in the distant future I'm sure they'll have races over there, perhaps with different vehicles though.
