AFTER MAKING BIG plans earlier this year I've done a whole lot of nothing so far. :|

Hmmm...strike that. Looking back through my blog, I've done more than I thought. Mostly I just haven't managed to produce a game.

I was going to use this blog entry as a data dump for everything I've half-assed over the last couple of months - and don't worry, I still will use it for that purpose! - but I think I will change gears and use it as a sort of retrospective of the year so far. Maybe help me get focused.

So, if you follow the link above (don't bother), you'll see that these were my plans for the year:

1. Write something for the Supercharger contest.

2. Write a standard cart 2600 game

3. Port Go Fish! to the A800

4. Write something for the minigame compo

I've sort-of made progress on a few of those things. I started work on an SC RPG for the contest but ran out of enthusiasm and time. If Glenn extends the contest deadline, I might pick this up again. Here's what I've got so far:

SCRPG20060317.bin

Basically, I took Andrew Davie's Boulderdash kernel concept and tried to shoehorn it into the SC. I got bogged down trying to figure out how to do the text.

My start-of-the year ideas for a 2600 cart were 1. a paddle-controlled, four-player horizontally scrolling shooter, 2. a port of Metroid to the 2600, and 3. something else that would use the paddles. I don't remember what. To lay everything on the table, I suppose I could also pick up my Arkanoid demo and finish that and I could finish the PONG demo. I've also been working on (pencil and paper) a Street Fighter II-esque fighter for the 2600 - which would have an insanely complicated kernel. Most likely, and tying in with #4, Squish 'Em will be the next game I finish.

As for porting Go Fish! to the A800 - I'd still like to do that, but I will probably try to port it to the GBA (!) first. ;)

In other news, I've done some music with Tommy. I haven't heard anything so I'm assuming that it ended up being too late, but Tommy and I wrote a title-screen tune for RPS, which I will unveil here:

RODTVTheSong20060529.bin

I think it turned out pretty well. I also am planning on writing (with Tommy) a tune for another game; hopefully this one won't be too late.

So...plans for the rest of the year? Tune for other game, Squish 'Em, more SC stuff, and other stuff as I am inspired. :D

Sounds good. I like how it pretends to play three voices at once

Also a cool FX kernel.

If it helps any, I'm still looking forward to see Squish'Em, my favourite from your list! :)

If you port Go Fish! to the A800, be sure to allow it to be assembled for the 5200 as well... Based on my ignorance, I think it's a really simple matter to write a game for both at the same time.

I hear the 5200 fans are a little desperate for homebrews...

BTW - you could combine two of the above.

I.e. a 4k entry for the Minigame Compo that's also an SC game, as I may do. If I remove the title screen, music and selections from Maze Craze 2, it just might fit in 4k.

Or I might make an 8k version of Superbug.

Either way, I don't expect to score well among the technically superior systems like the C64 or MSX, especially if they both have 8k to play with!

It will be interesting to see how the 8K compo goes. I'll probably submit Go Fish! in that. Well, maybe.

But it will be interesting to see if the later systems dominate that category.

I haven't heard from Billy, but I'll ask him about the RPS tune. As far as I know, the game still has a ways to go before being done, so I don't think the music is too late to include. I hope not anyway - I think it came out sounding great! :)

For those interested, here's the original. (1.4 MB MP3)

Nice tune. Both the original, and Bob's version.

I've been doing 'mostly' nothing as well. I'd like to pick up and finish your Pong demo. Or maybe at least work it for awhile and then hand it back? What do you think?

Either is fine. :)

Your RPG demo looks good, though I think the scrolling is too fast. Are you scrolling by 4 PF blocks at once, and would it be possible to scroll by just 1 PF block instead?

Another idea for you would be a 2600 version of BC's Quest for Tires - I think it should be straightforward to capture the basic gameplay using a variant of your Reindeer Rescue kernel?

It is scrolls at the tile level, where each tile is 4 PF-pixels wide and...24(?) pixels tall. As it is written it would not be possible to scroll at a finer level.

My plan was to use a thrust-style scroll method, where you move a sprite around the (non-scrolling) screen and when he reaches the edge of the screen, it rapidly scrolls your sprite back to the center.
