Aegis Games, a little thing I made up, is starting as of right now. Thanks to the kind people at 8 Bit Classics, any game I make will be for sale from now on. The first title under the Aegis Games name is Super Maria Sisters. For more info, check out the official Aegis website at http://www.atari2600land.com/aegis/ It's not a very pretty website, but I plan to update it to make it look pretty as time goes on. Just ignore that "starts August 1, 2006" thing at the bottom. Once Aug. 1 rolls around, I'll change it to "started August 1, 2006". It's just easier for me to remember when I started Aegis Games. But why Aegis as a name? #1 - I wanted a really weird name to pique people's interest. #2 - I wanted something cool from ancient mythology. Aegis, according to Webster's, is "the shield or breastplate of Zeus or Athena, bearing at its center the head of the Gorgon. There are 3 gorgons, the most famous one being Medusa. Medusa, for those who don't know, is that famous goddess who, if you look at her, you turn to stone. Zeus is the Greek god of all the other gods, and Athena is the Greek goddess of all the other goddesses. Aegis rhymes with "Regis" and is pronounced "Ee-gis." Aegis can also be spelled Egis, but the A in front of the E adds mystique. I doubt very many people will buy any Aegis games, but now I can say they are technically for sale.

You certainly seem to be enthusiastic about the Atari 2600 scene at the moment :D Also, it is nice that you are planning to make Ants and SMS available as carts. However, I think it would be great if you developed both of these games further. Ants is a nice concept, but it could use a lot more features to give it long term appeal. SMS is also a good idea, but it is very simple to finish the game at the moment. I think SMS could be a great game with at least some of the following features:

  1. Better sprite graphics - there are several sprite designers on the forums that will probably be happy to help.
  2. More levels - if you have around 5->10 core levels, then you can customise them to give the appearance of more, e.g. different entry and exit points, variable speeds, alternative colours and sprites, etc.
  3. More variety in the gameplay, e.g. collectibles, powerups, different enemy types

Most homebrew games are in development for a long time - usually several months to several years, so I don't think there is any rush to put them on carts?

Paction, a cross between Pac-Man and Fast Food, is going to be in development for at least a couple months, maybe longer. As for Super Maria Sisters, anyone who orders it gets $10 off of either Paction or another not known as-of-yet game just as a thank you for being interested enough in this new venture of mine. Besides, 8k games cost more to produce than a 4 or 2k cart, and I don't have enough money to make 8k carts yet. Super Maria Sisters has filled up almost all of 4k. I might do an 8k sequel to Super Maria Sisters sometime down the road with power-ups (I programmed 3 screens out of many so far). As for Ants, it's currently not for sale yet, as I need to do some more tweaking and changing the label, but if enough people request it, I'll put it up for sale. Thanks for writing.
