Did you know that if you have the right radio in Salem, Oregon; you could listen to a radio station in San Francisco, California? There may be a little more in static than you might think. DXing is the act of listening to radio stations really far away from where you are. I've done it a couple times before, but tonight I got two stations: one from San Francisco (KNBR 680 AM) and Reno NV (KKOH 780 "KOH"). If anyone listens to one of these 2 stations regularly, PM me because I'd like to hear from you. The other two stations I've got were KOMO 1000 AM in Seattle and KFBK in Sacramento. Well, anyway, today is my sister's birthday. That means I get cake. Yummy yummy cake. But back to DXing. This is the perfect hobby for me: It works best at night (and since I have no job, I get to stay up and do it) and I'm interested in stuff (newspapers, radio stations, etc.) that aren't local. When my sister's boyfriend went to Kansas City, I had him get me a Kansas City Star newspaper. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to take a Greyhound to San Francisco and rub Woody's ears. :)

I used to do that, didn't know there was a name for it.

I lived in Corpus Christi(CC) before I moved to Houston. It's a little over 200 miles south of Houston. I'd taken a trip to Houston and had been listening to 93Q (a top 40 station @ 92.9). On the trip back I listened to tapes, and got static on the radio when I'd change them. I was surprised when I got back to CC and 93Q came thru clear when I popped out the tape. It didn't work all the time, but it did often enough that I kept it on a preset.

DXing is fun to do in the high desert at night, as the conditions there are ideal. My brother and I once camped near White Mountain Peak on the California/Nevada border, at around 12,000 feet elevation. His radio (with digital tuner) picked up an audible station at every single frequency, from 530-1610 kHz in steps of 10 kHz. Some of the stations were thousands of miles away.

I'm in the middle of a valley in Western Oregon and yet I got a station from Las Vegas last night. I think the conditions will be good for a few more days where I live, so I'd better take advantage of it, so that means little sleep for me. There's a whole website about DXing for anyone who's interested, www.w9wi.com I'm just beginning to get the hang of it.
