RARE! eBay story

Hi there!

So, when trying to find me a copy of SMS Choplifter on eBay, scanning through the listed items, I found one without manual saying:

RARE!!

Now you must know, here in Germany this is the equivalent to NES SMB or 2600 Combat, there's just zillions of it in circulation.

Being in *that* mood again, I missused the "Ask Buyer" option sending the line:

"Yeah, yours is indeed very rare, all others around the corner are complete with manual."

He then answered "Then go and buy one around the corner!"

To which I answered "Thanks for this tip, it worked!", sending him the link of my purchase:

http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...em=320070967691

Greetings,

Manuel

Yeah, it's amazing what gets described as RARE!!!, particularly when a simple search (not even a completed auction search) finds multiple copies of the same item.

I wonder if all the sellers that put "RARE" on their auctions have learned to do so in a eBay workshop, or from some kind of "eBay for dummies" book. It's almost like they've been told it will attract buyers in the same way I imagine sellers have been told that "[email protected]@K" does. I wish there were some numbers that could empirically illustrate its effectiveness or lack thereof, preferably the latter, then I'd just send them the link.

I would think that something advertised as "CHEAP!!" would do better. Even if it weren't. :)

Like the GameBoys DSs with starting prices over what I can buy one from WalMart, even if I ignore the cost of shipping?

I think some people are so hooked on online shopping, they don't even consider the alternatives anymore. Admittedly, I buy almost all of my CDs and DVDs through Amazon now, for the sheer convenience of it. But usually I group enough stuff together to get free shipping.

I've only bought one thing from eBay though, and that's enough for me.
