Game Count by System

IN VARIOUS threads folks have written that such and such system has a poor library of games and it got me a bit curious.

So, using various sources (most AtariAge and Digital Press) I tried to compile a count of games for each system.

Here it is (US releases only).

A few notes/comments:

-First, I counted only XEGS-specific releases for that machine, though every XL/XE and most 400/800 carts would also run on it, and similarly with the disk games if you bought a disk drive.

-Interestingly, the only generation without a clear, overwhelming leader was the 16-bit generation, with the SNES and the Genesis essentially playing to a tie.

-Later consoles have their numbers inflated somewhat (compared to earlier consoles) by sports games that are released every year.

-Obviously, my numbers may be wrong. :ponder: Please point out any errors.

-It looks to me like ~600 games is the break even point for a console to have a "large" library. This is based just on things I've read - I frequently hear the N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, Saturn, Intellivision, Colecovision, SMS referred to as having "small" or "narrow" libraries, while rarely (if ever) do I hear the same thing about the 2600/NES/PS1/PS2/SNES/Genesis. The Xbox is right on the borderline w/ 600 games, which seems to conform to folks' thoughts about it: sometimes it is condemned/lamented for its small/narrow library, sometimes it is praised for its large/wide game selection.

VB is a handheld? I guess kinda it is...

Anyway, I have the handhelds in another list, but this post was long enough already so I scrapped my plans to include it. Maybe another post.

A few things that surprised me about this list:

How few games the Odyssey 2 and 5200 had.

How many games the Arcadia 2001 had.

The fact that the 3DO had any games. :)

Speaking of which, did the Pippin ever see U.S. release?

How few games the [...] 5200 had.

Yeah, Atari had the 2600, a bunch of arcade games, their 8bit computer line, and...a huge catalog of utter flops.

5200, 7800, Lynx, Jaguar, XEGS, ST, TT - you name it, they screwed it up.

Okay, that's an exageration, but still. :)

Interesting. In Europe we had twice as many SMS games, but only 1/3 of the NES titles, so they both equaled around 200-250 official titles I think :)

BTW: You were once comparing the SMS and the NES, no? If you find a few minutes, try "Chuck Rock 2" on a SMS emulator some day. It blows away anything the NES can do. By far the best SMS game I've seen so far, it really shows what the SMS could've been - with some more 3rd party support.

Excellent list. Maybe you can concoct a similar list but only HOMEBREWS. Might be a lot of work. But I'd be interested to see the proportions.
