EPROM Burner

For sometime, I've been wanting to burn a few EPROMs but not wanting to shell out for an eraser and burner. I've got a lot of different EPROM carts for various systems like the Vectrex, Gameboy, SEGA Genesis, NES, and 2600.

Just a couple of days ago, I was walking around at my work when I spotted an N64 gang cartridge programmer sitting in the corner collecting dust and it struck me dumb. Of course, we probably have an old burner lying around somewhere. After asking around, it turns out that indeed we do have a burner in a box, in a backroom gathering dust.

Back in the day, we made Gameboy games, at a time when all the carts were tested on EPROM carts. I think there may be still one Gameboy project still running today but they've moved on to flash carts a long time ago.

So I'm pretty excited to finally be able to burn a few carts!

Now.... what should I make...

Just thought I'd mention that you can make an EPROM eraser for around $10. I made my own. Just pick up a line-powered fluorescent light fixture that uses an F4T5 tube (Cost me $4.99 at Home Depot) and order a G4T5 germicidal tube online (around $5, more or less.) The germicidal tube produces UVC light which also happens to be the correct wavelength to erase EPROMs. Of course you need a case to put it in so you don't blind yourself. I made mine out of an old VHS tape case.

Germicidal?!! well then... you can also be sure that their won't be any bugs in your ROM!!

Excellent. :)

But, I was wondering. Won't the light break down the plastic in your cassette case? Probably not anytime soon but maybe I'll make mine out of metal anyway... :)

He he...

It definitely smells a little funny after an erase cycle. But then again, it's not like VHS tape cases are hard to come by.

EDIT: Speaking of plastic, I understand that the eraser probably won't work if you leave the clear plastic cover on the light fixture, as UVC supposedly doesn't penetrate clear plastic.
