Go Fish! Long Play

AFTER ALL MY WHINING earlier, it ended up not being too difficult after all:

GoFishExtended20070220.bin

:)

Changes:

-six digit scoring

-single, six-digit high score

-high score is saved to AVox EEPROM at a different location than the regular Go Fish! high scores

-added (previously PAL-only) fish color changes: fish are darker at bottom and lighter at the top. Thomas' suggestion; this helps the fish be more visible - he suggested it too late for the NTSC version

Issues:

-Eels are practically invisible (oops!) when they aren't flashing, especially on real hardware

-Should I add some kind of indicator to the title screen?

[EDIT: Forgot to mention - playtesting of this would be very appreciated! Especially looking at the fish colors, if they look good, and also general bug checking. I had to use a little more RAM and I'm slightly worried about the stack overwriting RAM, though I don't think it is ever a problem.]

As for how this will be distributed - well, I dunno. I do not want a general release of this, since the changes will only affect a very minor subset of players (namely, those, unlike myself, who can max the score at 9,999) and I don't want to be seen as trying to squeeze $ from collectors who feel compelled to buy one of everything. So, I am considering offering this on a cartridge for a reduced (i.e., royalties-free) price (possibly with a very slightly modified label) to anyone who can verify, with a picture, that they have maxed the score on a regular Go Fish! cart. Thoughts? Realistically, the only copies I will likely sell will be those that were specifically requested in the first place, but I figured since I did the work I might as well make an open offer.

I played for over 1,000 and didn't see any color issues other then the eels.

Since you don't have plans to make this a full release I don't think you need any changes on the title screen. You could always make a few minor changes or just add a fish symbol somewhere. Just changing the moon into a fish and the border to blue made a big difference.

I would love to get a copy if you make some.

There's some established way to make such an update without creating too much fuss, which is called "silent update". Just send Al the new binary when it's done and fully tested and don't tell anyone but those who requested this version :)

Thanks a whole bunch for playtesting!

I haven't checked, but does the player's fish change its brightness too?

Nope, though that wouldn't be too hard to do, since it wouldn't require any changes to the kernel. I think it would look odd, though. :)

Yeah...except. Except I would prefer that the current version in the store remain the standard version; I really like having a three-entry high score table. :)

I like the idea of the new version being kind of a "reward" for those beating the original game. Sort of like an Activision patch. :)

I played this for a while (got a score or 1802!), and everything seemed fine. My only beef is that sometimes it's kind of hard to tell which fish you're allowed to eat, especially since they're slightly different colors depending on their depth. Maybe some kind of indicator could help, or something. Like maybe the sky turns orange when you're allowed to eat the orange-ish fish, or perhaps something less obtrusive.

Even if you change your name, I can still ID you on your Custom Status :)

I don't think he's trying to hide (or...are you?), I imagine that he's just standardizing his usernames across different forums he frequents.

It *could* be something more nefarious, though...:) :)
