Super Columns

Made by Sega in 1995, Super Columns is just one of the many games based on Strat-O-Gems. Other examples include Puyo Pop for multiple platforms (including the DS) and Kirby's Avalanche for SNES. Super Columns is the game currently resting inside my Game Gear (the almost broken one ;)) And what sets this apart from others are a few things: Sometimes, these things fall down and cause the whole board to flip horizontally, hopefully causing a whole bunch of new chain reactions and clearing the board a little. Since it didn't come with an instruction booklet, it took about a few days to discover that I could flip the columns sideways (Super Rows, anyone?) The thing in Strat-O-Gems that causes one color to disappear comes less frequently in this game, and there's only a choice between two shapes (with 5 set colors). Another thing that bugs me about this game is that the columns of 3 speed up as the game progresses, something that Strat-O-Gems doesn't do. And the fact that I only have 3 Game Gear games is something I hope to remedy to my trip to Game Crazy this weekend. ;)

I added sound to the SpongeBob game, when he jumps, it makes a noise. I don't know which version I have on yesterday's blog, but now it has sounds for dying and getting extra lives. I also added a couple levels, but I'm having a little trouble making the jellyfish move diagonally in level 10, so I'm going to wait until I post an updated version.

I know you were facetious with the above, but I started work on what would become Strat-O-Gems, based on a PC game entitled Columns, back in 1994. An examination of the present code and the 1994 code would reveal the similarities.

So Puyo Pop is a rip-off of Columns?

I'm sorry, I didn't know people were working on homebrew Atari 2600 games in 1994. I thought the only homebrew 2600 game back then was Edtris.

I must mention that the first homebrew game I'll buy will be Strat-O-Gems.

EDIT: I guess my wording was off. It should have read "it was one of the games that Strat-O-Gems was based on."

I briefly tried 2600 development back in 1994. If I'd figured out the RIOT timer, I probably would have gotten farther than I did. In case you're wondering, here's what I had on October 21, 1994: Old thread with attachment

As a further clarification, I had some knew how things like the multi-sprite trick worked, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out why it behaved so goofy. Even though I understand the hardware, I still find myself somewhat perplexed by it.
