PC-to-PS2 Ports: Part 1

When the PS2 came out in 2000, publishers who were late to join the development bandwagon needed to have a published presence on the console to establish a stake. Most companies already had a full stable of intellectual property from the PC, but most were at a loss for games that would be PS2-worthy. Enter the 3rd-party publisher; most of these games weren't published or ported by the same company that did the work before, but in any case, they made it to the console soon after the release date, and most play great (if not better) with a Dualshock. This time, I'll be recommending four of them, but expect ongoing installments of this article as time passes.First up;Oni! Developed by Bungie (that's right, Haloites) and published by Rockstar, this 3rd-person action game can best be described as "Tomb Raider with a shot of anime and a set of balls" :D . A great game that works well with the PS2 controller layout. It almost seems as if this title was intended for a console instead of the PC.Second up is Rune: Viking Warlord, another 3rd-person action game powered by some spruced-up Unreal tech. Published by Take 2 Interactive (the bigger brother of Rockstar), this game replaces the typical gunplay and swaps in melee combat. Multiplayer with axes and swords is a blast and shouldn't be passed up!helloThese next two games you'll probably recognize instantly, but not as PS2 games. These are the two games you played to death at LAN parties everywhere. They are;Unreal Tournament, and Quake III: Revolution. Both games are fundamentally identical to their PC and Dreamcast counterparts, and while they're not the graphical powerhouses they used to be (UT looks especially downtrodden on the PS2), they're still great multiplayer games to have when your friends come over. The best part of it all? All four of these games can be easily obtained for under $10 new from retail stores, if you do some good hunting. For the record, my local Wal-Mart stocks Unreal Tournament, but your mileage may vary, so be sure to check around. Keep an eye out for "PC-to-PS2 Ports: Part 2"!
