C64 Fort Apocalypse VICE Recording

Hi there!

Just made a first attempt at recording data for a C64 longplay video:

Fort Apocalypse

This is a small (100K) package. To use it, unzip it somewhere, then do the following:

- File / Attach Cartridge Image / CRT Image

=> Choose the Fort Apocalypse CRT from the ZIP

- Snapshot / Load Snapshot Image

=> Choose fort_start.vsf

- Snapshot / Start-Stop Playback History

Then you should be able to watch it. It's recorded with VICE 1.20 and AFAIK the files should work on any VICE version equal or higher than 1.15

Let me know if this works for you and in case if you like the recording or if you have any suggestions for improving it :)

Greetings,

Manuel

Get a "Cannot read snapshot image" error with VICE 1.19...

Will try to dig up 1.20

EDIT: Got 1.21 and it worked, though I had to rename fort_end.vsf to end.vsf

Fun to watch. ;)

Suggestion for improvement:

-is there a more interesting way to dodge missiles than running away until they run out of gas?

Uihjah... I really thought it should work straight away. But I'm new to this as well...

Fun to watch. :D

Thanks!

Problem is that they're kinda guided, so if you don't head away from them full tilt you're history - they'll adjust their height and hit you. In theory you should be able to shoot them, but the collision detection is a nightmare in this game. Best thing to avoid them seems to be shooting the tanks first :D

Did you notice the one missile on the way back that just went in a full arc around the 'copter? Hit me by surprise, I've never seen that before :D

Maybe I should use more savestates. But I wanted to keep a "natural" feel on it, so that my reactions look rather realistic and not supernatural because I know in advance what will happen ;)

What I don't like is the pauses on the way down. The first wasn't all my fault, since the tunnel didn't open sooner, but on the second I missed the key for saving the state :D

Yeah...I played it a little in Atari800Win after you mentioned it a couple days ago and the collision detection is equally bad on that platform. Seems odd...doesn't the C64 have hardware collision detection? I know the A8 does...
